Newest BP rescue
Not one hour after adopting out a rescue I took in at the beginning of the year, I got another phone call from several people at once who know I will never turn down a snake in need. There was a big snake that appeared to be an escaped or released pet found under some stairs. So off I went, to a local student housing complex (of COURSE). This poor angel was found by the terrified manager. Her husband brought him to me in a pillow case. I opened the pillow case and gasped. This snake is in the worst condition I've seen--he looked almost dead at first, the poor thing.
We went to the vet the next day as soon as I woke up. My worst fears were confirmed: a systemic internal infection stemming from scale rot. Also burns on the tail, a stuck shed on top of a current shed, and he was holding his jaw funny because his mouth was filled with foamy saliva and petechiae from the infection. Bruises on the belly, the list goes on... :(
We have a long road of recovery ahead, but for now he is on Fortaz injections every 3 days and daily soaks with Sulfa applications after, plus hygrotherapy in his tank. Everyone please send him good snake vibes, prayers, and loving light. He needs all he can get right now!
And I put an ad on Craigslist for a found snake that has yet to be returned, just like the last 2 ads I placed for found ball pythons. People make me crazy.
Also, DON'T RELEASE YOUR PETS INTO THE WILD!!!!

Re: Newest BP rescue
Thankfully this creature found it's way into your hands. I wish the person who did this found their way into mine. Keep up the good work. Animals in need, need people like you.

Not to just assume it was released........ We get a couple posts a week about an animal escape.

Very true, but every time I post that I found them on craigslist, and every time the post goes unreturned. Unfortunately it's all too common in student housing complexes. Kids graduate, they release their pets. I've been ccalled about ets being literally left behind after the person vacates, and they want nothing to do with the animal anymore. Especially BPs-the number of people who assume they are wild and therefore can be released is astoundingly high. So frustrating...
But, fingers crossed nonetheless. Maybe he did escape. I hope the owner contacts me and maybe reimburses me the vet bills and supplies... But if not, no biggie. I will work something out. :) He's not microchipped so craigslist will have to do for now, unless you have any suggestions??

Also very true... Any other ideas? I don't want to post fliers because honestly I think it's a waste of time. If I lose a snake the first thing I'm doing is posting stuff everywhere people will look. But maybe that's just me. :/

YES! Update time!!
So for the first few weeks I was doing daily soaks then applying Sulfa, along with antibiotic injections every 3 days (which I still have to continue to do). I finally stopped the daily soaks about a week ago when I noticed we weren't making any progress, and just figured he will shed when he's ready.
Sure enough, today I put him in a warm, wet pillowcase and let him sit for a few minutes. Then I took him out and began rolling the pillowcase against him, and a patch came loose, then rolled off. I kept working, and he began producing that secretion that aides in shedding and he let me gently roll his shed off! It took about an hour and a half since it came off in pieces, but ALL of the stuck shed and the new shed came off, including the eye caps. ALL of the scale rot came off too! His belly is a beautiful cream color again, and no more rotten scales!! He has a tiny tinge of pink on the tips of his scales in one 2-inch section (where the rot was the worst), but other than that his skin is gorgeous, and he finally looks and feels like a normal ball python!
As if that's not enough good news, he peed and pooped too right after the last of the shed came loose! Pee is a little dark, and he lost a bit of fluids today with the shed as well so I'm going to tube him some IV fluids tomorrow morning. We are continuing the shots for any remaining internal infection, but he is recovering beautifully!!
Here's the best part: BEFORE AND AFTER PICS!
BEFORE: Rot and stuck shed under chin:

AFTER! Old and new shed came off, along with rot!

AFTER! All clear!

I am so thrilled. The poop was too small and watery to test, and I want to hold off on anti-parasitics until we get a clean bill of health, but things are looking so much better. And despite it all, he has yet to even nip at me.
I have named him, appropriately, Phoenix.
