    Black spot under both eyes?
My new ivory royal python seems to have 1 black spot under each of his eyes?

He was out last night (exploring in his tank) and I took some pictures and I've just noticed he's got a black spot under both his eyes?

    http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c1510363db.jpg

I don't know if you can see it but here are the picture I took off my phone.

    http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...83f2f7d4a3.jpg

He has no black spots in his water bowl or on him so I don't think it's mites..

    Thanks

    Black spot under both eyes?
Those are definitely mites. I bought a bp a while back and when she came to me she was soaking in her water bowl and had mites after I treated her she still had some mites left in her eye that couldn't just fall off. So if you sort of roll back the skin a bit by the eye like you would if you checking under your finger nail for dirt it should help the mite get out of there. Just be very gentle and it should pop right out. Hope this is helpful! [emoji4]

There is only 2 that I can see and it's on his eyes?? There is none on his body.. would they spread??

I have him on lignocel (loose substrate) should I take him off? I have never encountered mites before so I don't know what to do, 2 of my snakes (this one and a hatchling corn snake)are kept side by side on a large heat mat?

Could you advise me what to do please as I don't want them all catching these filthy bugs..

I'm not sure it's mites , could be substrate, but if it is then Buy something to treat for mites.Clean/disinfect everything and treat for mites. You Will have to treat all your snakes not just the one.
Look up treating from mites, what to use, when/how to use it and go from there.
    Good Luck

Yes mites spread. Can spread very quickly. If it is mites your more than likely going to see some in the water bowl soon and your snake will be soaking alot

Gently remove it, if it removes easily, then crush it in a papertowel between your fingers. if it is a mite you will feel a crunch and there will be blood on the papertowel. That will let you know if you've got a mite or just some dirt that looks like a mite.

Re: Black spot under both eyes?
He is quite head shy so I doubt I can touch his head.

I also found one more under his chin so I know for sure now it's mites.

    http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...98f8c229a8.jpg

There isn't any mites in his water bowl.

At the moment I can only see 3 mites.

I have never been bitten by my snakes(or any snake for that matter) so I don't really want to get bit just incase I pull his teeth out, so I don't know how I'm going to get the mites out of his eyes? I don't really like man handling them.

Also what would happen if I actually touch his eye of my finger slips? Could it cause damage??

Also his head is quite small so I don't really want to grab his head because I might hurt him..

Now that you see that third one you know they are mites so don't worry about poking him in the eye. Start mite treatment for all your snakes right away. There is a lot of info on the forum on treating mites. Mites are no fun, but they aren't the end of the world. You've caught it early.

Also if you just got him contact the breeder/supplier right away and tell them about this.

Re: Black spot under both eyes?
The mite in the eye is going to be a tuff one, it may crawl out on its own. What I use for mite treatment is natural chemistry reptile spray on the snake and provent a mite for enclosure. Make sure you take snake and water out of enclosure when using provent a mite and let air out real good. With natural chemistry reptile spray just spray directly or put on a paper towel and let snakes run through a few times, I wouldn't get it in its eyes though and also soak snake after bc it access actually dehydrates the mites which also dehydrates your snake repeat every 7 days for a couple months to make sure you get all of them and any newly hatched ones. Both products really work well! If you decide to buy them just make sure you follow the instructions exactly!

Definitely do this. When my newly acquired snake had mites in the eyes I let the breeder know and he offered to send me some mite spray because he didn't know and really loved his collection and apologized to me many times for not knowing. We still talk to this day, he's a good friend of mine.

But don't worry about the mites in the eyes they are much easier to remove than you think. Get some of the mite spray that was suggested the Natural Chemistry and keep an extra bottle on hand just incase (that's what I do now). It seems crazy but when I helped Delilah get three mites out of her eyes (two in one eye, one in the other) Delilah seemed very calm and just let me get them out, I'm sure they must have bothered her. They popped out really easy, barely use any pressure at all. It's kinda like popping a pimple that's super ready to pop (sorry that's kinda gross) that's the best analogy I could think of lol. Keep us updated on your beautiful snake.

Also a snake's eye is protected by a special scale so it's not like poking a mammal in the eye. ;) However with good treatment they should die and either fall out or come off with the next shed.

I told the women who I bought it off that he has mites etc and she told me he didn't have them when he left her house?

It's definitely not just happened as I've never seen mites on my female royal?

I've had him for a week now and I've only just noticed the mites because of that first picture, I've not even handled him yet but he has already striked at me lol

When I told her about him having mites she told me to use ardarp? Is this good to kill the mites?
Is there any easy to use ones? That you can directly spray the snake? It seems alot of fuss to take the snake out of the enclosure and spray it down and let it air out for an hour, I don't really want the snake to come out if it's got mites and it's spreads..

Can they spread to humans?? When I opened his cage I felt quite itchy

The mites can not spread to you, but they will spread to all your cages because they can and will crawl out. The snake must come out of the tub. You have to get rid of the substrate, you have to clean the tub, treat the tub, etc, etc... As for treating the snake directly, that depends on what you use. Look up mite treatments on here.

Getting rid of mites is a LOT of fuss. But if you don't do it they will continue to breed and spread.

At the moment I have taken the substrate out and cleaned the tub with reptile safe disinfectant and put paper towels down.

I will try and get some provent-a-mite tomorrow or something similar.

    Thanks for the help

You can try and find some of this in the store or order it.
    http://m.petco.com/shop/en/petcostor...-reptile-spray

You can spray it directly on the snake and in the enclosure.

Re: Black spot under both eyes?
Natural chemistry reptile spray like I said works really well but I personally would not use it in the cage, order provent a mite for the cage.

Being that there's only a few mites you very well could of brought them home from somewhere. They really are nasty buggers and infestation can happen quick. They simple live to suck blood and breed and continue this process. Treat all your snakes, start with the one that has them and once that one is done move to the next. If your using a rack system you will have to move each tub out of the rack to let the provent a mite air out bc you don't want the vapors to travel to the others. Also make sure you sweep or mop and clean all surfaces including floor around the cages so the outside ones can't travel back in.

Mites thrive in bp conditions, it's actually a sign your doing something right....a horrible, pain in the butt sign lol

Sorry, but I'm from the uk. Have you got any uk site links?

I haven't got them on a rack, they are my pets.. my female is in a vivarium and my male is in a faunarium,.. would I also need to treat my hatchling corn snake? He is in a tall cricket keeper (because he keeps escaping) could mites get into that??

I'm from the UK but haven't ever had any mites so far so can't advise where to buy. . But if I remember rightly the main things that people mention to use are not available in the UK so either have to pay stupidly high shipping cost and delivery time or find something ells on Google.
And yes mites can get to your corn snake and will have to be treated aswell

Also people who keep ball pythons as pets use snake racks aswell, not just breeders.

Provent a mite. I couldn't think of the name of it.
The biggest ball python breeder in the UK "New Venture Ball Pythons" used to have someone who brought him Provent a mite over from the US because he couldn't get it in the UK. Don't think he's needed it in 10 years tho so probably can't get it anymore unfortunately.

Re: Black spot under both eyes?
I've just tried looking online for it and can't seem to see any uk sites that sell it.

What are the other alternatives? Could I use ardap? Callingtons? I've also hear that I could use olive oil?
Could anyone suggest which would be the best option?

    Thanks
