Is an AP T8 too overkill?
So I'm getting a baby bp in the next week. I have a little 6qt set up. I know it can't stay in there for too long, but I can't move it up into a 15qt because I can't heat my room enough. I ordered a AP T8 with a 80 watt Pro-Heat panel, thinking I was going to get an adult. Is an AP T8 too overkill once the little bp gets too big? (Side question: when is too big for a 6 qt tub?
Main Points:
Is a T8 too big for a young bp?
Any cheap ways to divide a T8 (I have no money left :please:)?
Would an 80 watt rhp be too much to make an effective heat gradient for half a T8?
Thanks, just trying to solve these problems before I get my bp.
Re: Is an AP T8 too overkill?
The AP divider is only 20 bucks. If you can't spring for that how are you going to feed this animal?

The reason I can't afford that is because my money is going towards the food. I see your concern though. It's not like I don't have the money, but if I can do something myself with the same quality, but for less, why not? Anyways, do you know if that if the heat panel I have would provide a good gradient?
Re: Is an AP T8 too overkill?
Your heat panel is fine for a full T8 but if you use a divider you will want a 40w panel. You really should use a divider with a baby ball unless you want the problems of refusals.

So I'll have to buy another heat panel? Not trying to cut corners here, but what if I installed the RHP in one corner of the T8. It would heat more the side of the cage that isn't being used but the heat would also radiate towards the side of the cage that occupied. Then, I could use THG tape to achieve the hot spot. Thats just an idea, I don't even know if it will work.
Re: Is an AP T8 too overkill?
What are the dimensions of the 80w? Half a T8 is 24x24 so the 40w from reptile basics would work which is 12.5x12.5.

88 watt, 12" x 14" x 1" not much bigger then a RB panel. I could monitor it with a thermostat (I would do that regardless)
Re: Is an AP T8 too overkill?
You usually want the longest part of the rhp to be half the size of the cage.

Yeah 12x14 is pretty close. Just as long as it doesn't heat your cool side to hot that should work.

What would you consider too hot?
Re: Is an AP T8 too overkill?
I set my rhp to 90 and it keeps my cool side 80 on a normal day but if it's hotter then normal it goes up to 82.5. I wouldn't let it get over 83 IMO. If it does just drop the rhp down a couple degrees but if it's always above 83 even with dropping your hot temp to 88 I would buy a lower watt rhp

Alright, thank you all. Just waiting for my cage to arrive and testing out temps with my 10 gallon right now.

When you have it you can try different things to check the temps. And you could make a movable divider and make it a little bit bigger rather than having it right in the middle which would move the cold side further away.
How would you make a movable divider?

The divider from animal plastics is movable already so you don't have to keep the cage 50/50. You can start at 50/50 and move the divider to 60/40 then 70/30 and so on until your snake is full grown. $20 for a perfect fit movable divider isn't bad.

But in a previous post on here about the t8 they said there is a slight groove that the divider goes in and the divider is screwed in so you'd have to keep making holes if that's the case.
Although now that I think about it that might have been a different make not an AP cages.
They give you the option of making it permanent if you want and provide screws but you don't have to do that. You can definitely move the divider, I have a T10 but no divider personally but I have read plenty of t8 threads to know they can be moved. If you read the how to set up PVC cage AP T8 sticky the OP of the threads has dividers and states you can move it.

Re: Is an AP T8 too overkill?
My 80watt panel takes up 1/2 the t8 or pretty damn near close. You could get the 40 and get another in a year or so. A 40 watt my be enough too if you live in warm area. Summer is coming and won't need to heat as much. I have a t8 with 40s on each side and they barley come on now with the heat out side
