    Tips for cleaning used cages?
I recently bought a used cage and it has 1 corner with a caked on urate that has been there for about a year. It seems that dish soap and water did not do much as most of it is still caked on after soaking. I plan to follow up with ammonia tomorrow. Any other ideas to help remove the caked on urate?

    Slim
What kind of cage is it?

Water is the universal solvent. Given enough time it will work.

Vinegar is good for cutting through urine deposits. Ask a rabbit owner! :D

This. Vinegar will dissolve whatever is left.

I use razor blades, the ones you can buy in a pack at the hardware store. So far (fingers crossed) I haven't found anything they can't take off of used cages.

Is it the boaphile you were talking about buying? What did you end up buying from him? Those were some pretty good deals!

Don't use an ammonia based cleaner, ammonia can cause some types of plastics to shrink and crack. I take off stuck on urates with an old butter knife.

Yeah, I got the 421T as well as both thermostats. He gave me some bowls as well.

Scraper to get it off then vinegar/water. You could try a magic eraser, those suckers work pretty well on everything actually. Boaphiles do tend to stain white from waste so you might have a discolored spot no matter what though.

Razor blades all the way. Nothing works better on a glass viv. I would even use on a razor on used wooden viv and if any of the varnish came off I would not be too fussed as I would be sanding and revarnishing the inside anyway so it would be almost like new inside and I will know there will be no nasties lurking in the viv

Very nice! I would of bought the thermostats in a heart beat! I've been buying off classifieds like crazy though lol. I just got about the same deal on 2 ve-200, 1 ve-200d, and 1 ve-300. I won't be using any of them for about another month. Since I only have used Herpstat if you put one to use let me know how they compare to Herpstat as far as how consistent the temps are and how accurate. Oh and sorry I wasn't trying to change the topic!
