I have posted him a number of times. He came out of a fire bee x superpastel het g stripe pairing. Neither parent had that look, so if it is genetic it would be recessive. Here he is bred back to the mom.

Yes he looked like that straight out of the egg.

Could try puting t him with a sister.

There is no reason to. Neither parent were visuals, so if this is reproducible genetically, then the parents are both 100% hets. Whatever the father has, the mother has. The son has the visual homozygous form, so I use him over the father. The sisters would be 66% hets, so the mother is better.

Unless it was a spontaneous mutation that neither parent carried the coding for... Okay that's probably not what happened, I'm just playing devil's advocate here lol. You are right that breeding back to a parent would yield the best results. It would be interesting if it were a new mutation but not likely. Are the parents related, by any chance?

This wouldn't be unheard of. It's exactly how new genes pop up, like for instance blue eyes in humans.

It may very well be a spontaneous mutation, that's what I meant when I said assuming it was reproducible genetically, and I kind of knew as I was typing that that I probably didn't word it right.

No, the parents are not related at all, to my knowledge anyway. Got from different people at different times.

If it is spontaneous mutation, well, guess I can not reproduce the effect. But I still am happy to have a really cool snake. But you never know, so let's see.

It reminds me of Mike Wilbanks's Atomic combos.

Since both of the parents of this animal carry the Pastel gene, they could very well be distant relatives.

New genes can just pop up within a collection as well. You could breed two snakes together, produce a new mutation, and never be able to produce that mutation again by breeding the original parents together. But the one you did produce, has the ability to reproduce itself. New mutations have to start somewhere. That's one of my favorite things about this hobby, any one of us could unexpectedly hatch out something never seen before.

I really hope this proves out for you. Did you happen to pair the original parents together the following season? Or did you get this male up to size in time?

Thanks, the son grew up in time for breeding this year, so this is the first time the female is bred since birth to the son.

If it is a spontaneous mutation, you could reproduce it, because he carried it and would theoretically pass it on to some of his kids. You would just have to do some F2 crossing with his offspring, or breed some of his daughters back to him.

Even if it's spontaneous, if it is genetic, it could still eventually be reproduced with careful breeding effort.
