Well I did it again!
So there I was, driving down the road with the wife and daughter, when my daughter said "Hey dad did you see that huge aquarium at the garage sale?". Me being me quickly turned the truck around and out of the corner of my eye I see my wife roll her eyes. What my daughter thought was an aquarium was actually a store display case. I looked it over and its pretty solid. Paid 60 bucks I think I got a deal. Wife was like where are you gonna put that. Little does she know I bought it for her. She had Iguanas as a kid and when she went to college she was forced to get rid of them. She has been wanting Iguanas again just about as long as we have been married (20 years). Okay enough story, yall need to help me brainstorm this project. its not like a traditional enclosure. Help.......

That looks like prime Ackie monitor territory to me...

Re: Well I did it again!
I was thinking Monitor too but we have never had one. Guess I could research husbandry.

Re: Well I did it again!
Cleaned it up a bit. Removed the sliding doors. Think I am gonna put glass in the door frame. Cut the old not to code wiring out. And got all the cobwebs and egg bags out before the wife could see that mess. Also got the red felt and mirrors out. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...35440d19f4.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...8a2cb770bd.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a711373207.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...645bb9f6a4.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...0980db8979.jpg

Well I did it again!
So, did you buy from from Jason Meyer or Hannibal Lector? :)

I assume the dude in the hockey mask is a mannequin.

Okay seems like I sanded for 4 hours. But it cleaned up nicely and it was put together very well. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e03de856f9.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a33f0183a0.jpg

Yeah I'm just trying to figure out in my head what to do with it.

Well, for an iguana I would think it needs more height. A juvie would be ok I guess. I see that and it screams monitor to me. But use thick glass if you do!! Tail strikes are a problem lol.
It looks really sturdy! Read: heavy. What is your floor weighted for? Compared to hockey mask guy that thing is big.... You might have to brace your joist.

Yeah I'm leaning more towards monitor now. Currently researching husbandry.

Re: Well I did it again!
Does any know a good product to paint the inside with. I know it will need to be water resistant. Thought about tiling it but have a bad back and this thing needs to go upstairs lol.

Re: Well I did it again!
Depends what you want it to look like if wood look sanding sealer then 3-4 coats of oil poly would be best. For painted I recommend oil primer, sand, caulk, 2 coats of good latex enamel semi gloss. If you paint, the paint takes 30 days to cure. It's easier maintain ploy than paint. You could use a waterborne poly but I would put as many coats as you can on it. ( water-based is faster dry but not as thick in coating ). ☺

What about something like a truck bed liner?

Re: Well I did it again!
I wouldn't.. it doesn't bond well to wood. Usually you have to scratch the surface all up to get it to bond.

Update.....
Some how I got the great idea to split the thing up into 3 different areas. Water features in all 3 areas with plumbing underneath. I can make fake rock so that isn't an issue. Thing is I have never used live plants and really want to use them in this project.. Any help would be awesome.

Re: Well I did it again!
Got a chance to work on the enclosure today. Thank you spring break. The frames for the sliding doors didn't want to come apart very well and some of the corners splintered. Hello trip to the home store. Got some very nice oak and a new router. Been looking for a reason to buy one anyway. So I had no idea that making tongue and groove joints would take me so long to learn. One word of advice practice on crap wood before you work with the expensive stuff. Anyway here are pictures. I'll try to finish up the doors tomorrow. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...bd1ba41fdd.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...645670d79d.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...715f68ed5b.jpg

Re: Well I did it again!
Just a quick question. I have been dragging my feet on this project trying to figure out what type of reptiles to out in here. I wasn't to split it into three enclosures. Would you set up 3 different heat zones or just one long run of heat tape?

Re: Well I did it again!
I would think that would depend on what you're putting in each area. Things with different temperature requirements would need its own heat zone controlled separately, I assume.

Well as of right now one of the 3 spaces will be for an adult BP, one will be for dart frogs or toads and one will be for some type of chameleon

Re: Well I did it again!
Sounds like you might better off with separate heat zones, I'm not familiar the kind of temperature requirements for those kind of frogs or toads or the chameleon, but I assume they're probably different. Haha

Re: Well I did it again!
Sorry I haven't posted in awhile. Kinda got side tracked. Anyway worked on the doors last night and this am. Glass is easier to cut than I thought. Doors are taped off and ready for paint. Now I just need to figure out what color? http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...40558974b6.jpg

Re: Well I did it again!
Doors are dry and did a fitting this morning. They seem to work great other than the roller I used were original to the display. It wasn't as smooth as I would like. I am going to the Depot for wood. Maybe I'll find an alternative. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...6dd6ba8c59.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...4d5987c96f.jpg

Now I am pretty much waiting on glass to cover the heat tape. Then it can all come together.

Re: Well I did it again!
Mail finally came in. Glass is here. Thermostat is here. Now i just need to wire everything up. I sealed the floor up tonight with bar top. I know it is a little expensive but i wanted a product that would last a long time. I will poly the inside walls. Just need to let this dry and then i can mock up the lights. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a65419fcc0.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...86239d17ec.jpg

Re: Well I did it again!
Lol, you've gotta put some neat design on the doors though. 😜 You can shove supplies in there, haha, or items which correlate with whatever room the enclosure is going in.

Re: Well I did it again!
Got the casters put on this evening so it would be easier to move. Tomorrow lots of sanding, poly and paint hopefully then i can focus on the inside. Just need to find a crap load of Styrofoam. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...282494c876.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c944867934.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...42a55fe3ca.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...a85ba44b8a.jpg

Have you ever thought of maybe a great northern blue tongue skink, they get about 22 inches long and from what i have read and seen on the internet they are quite personable, and very people oriented. i was looking at one, but i got another bp and ran out of room in my house.
