New Hoggie!

So this is my first hognose snake, but the 4th snake that I own. I'm assuming it's a she, but don't know for certain. She seems to be adjusting well.

She hasn't eaten yet, but I'm not too worried about that. She's still adjusting. I was going to try giving her some boiled egg whites. I read that hoggies love them. But I was curious if they could eat the yokes too? She's turned down her tuna and salmon scented pinkies. She was eating like a champ before I picked her up, I'm assuming she'll get back on track once I get my 40 watt CHE for her today to get her temps up to par.

Congrats! Nice looking hognose there and I bet it will be a lot of fun.

Looks great! Hognose are the best! Try rubbing the hardboiled egg white on the pinkie. I don't know if they can eat the yolk or if they just end up making a mess out of it. ;)

Unless your hognose is not eating and is failing to thrive I would not recommend feeding anything other than mice. Feeding eggs or fish, frog or even scented prey is 2 step backward, if it eats mice feed mice.

If she was eating fine before on unscented than you need to assess your husbandry fix it and than be patient.

The breeder had her on salmon scented pinkies. Husbandry is back on track with the new CHE. I'm going to give her a day or two and try feeding again. Should I keep with the scented pinkies until she eats or attempt unscented?

Get her feeding for you regularly before you try pulling any switches. Was the breeder keeping her on paper towels as well? These little fossorial snakes can't truly thrive unless they have suitable substrate for burrowing. Paper towels are fine for a week or so after you bring them in to make sure you're mite free but it's probably time to throw some shredded or chipped aspen in there soon.

Than keep doing that do not offer too often every 5 days is more than enough. If salmon worked it will again.

I would ditched the paper towel and provide a 1 to 2 inch layer of aspen, either shredded or sanichip. Paper towel is great to monitor for mites but they do best when they can burrow.

Make sure it does not get too hot you want to aim for 90-94 on the warm side.

And like any snake avoid messi bg with it until it adjust to it's new environment and eats for you.

I do have some aspen on hand that I can add. How can I avoid the 'substrate sticking to food item' issue? I've seen a substrate made of paper, in little tiny squares. Breeders often have it but I can't find it anywhere.

Hot side is 92, ambient temp of 80, and cool side is 75.

If your hog s ery young and not taking the prey off the tongs you can place the prey on a small post-it if you are worried ;)

It works as well, I usually usually use something similar when my female are a about to lay. The only thing you want to watch for is that your humidity is not too high, make sure you let your substrate dry for a few days before using it.

Turns out this little worm only wants live. She's become quite the voracious eater now, and she just had a nice shed. She's quick and still really squirmy; she may be tiny (12 grams now!) but she keeps me on my toes!

Mira is still eating like a hog (pun intended) and growing like crazy! I moved her into a large exoterra that should be her permanent home, unless she gets massive.
