I often wonder what everyone on here does to be able to afford their herp pets/hobby. I realize some people turn it into a business but what about the other regular joes/janes, professionals ect.?

Hubby works for Rutgers, I coupon and budget and get free samples to cut back on spending. I use rebates, call companies directly and ask about products. Or I send hand written letters, and generally can get coupons for my efforts. I also stalk a listing site and a freebie site looking for second hand gear that can be sanitized.

i make my own cleaners and sometimes sell hand knitted or crocheted items to supplement income.

When I was on the ambulance or in the E.R. families were always appreciative of my services. Sometimes people would write letters of appreciation and my partner and I would receive commendation letters from supervision. Whenever I mention what my career was nowadays people are always appreciative. People mostly remember 9- 11.

I'm a buyer for a packaging distribution company. Love being able to buy kraft dunnage, singleface corrugated and foam shipper boxes at cost for my snake hobby! Moving at the end of the year to a very small town and no idea what I'll be doing besides keeping my fingers crossed I can find a decent paying job quickly.

No one knows I have anything other than dogs. If I don't want you to, I can have you in my house for hours and all you will ever know about is my dogs. And you won't even see them, just hear their feet and barking. I leave them upstairs. You have to earn access to my upper floor.

Note: we own our home, so we aren't hiding animals from landlords lol. I just don't want to deal with the drama most people bring with them. I get enough crap for having a garden. Just wait until I expand the plot this year! They've whined enough that I've decided I want cucumbers and pumpkins. I don't complain about their peaches and rotten fruit in my yard giving my dogs the runs, they can just hush about my veggies.

If I thought I could get away with it i would have chickens. Or at least quail. But well... I still get peta stuff about that time I came home with a deer carcass. Smh.

so yeah, I don't share with my neighbors lol.

I work with a good group of guys... We're all IT guys, and I think each one of us has our own unique hobbies... nobody really bats an eye about my reptiles. The ones that don't like snakes don't really come around anyways, so I don't care.

Up until vary recently, I did cabinetry refinishing and built custom cabinetry. After 6 1/2, I Now I have been forced out onto greener pastures ( boss is retired and is folding the business). I am now in residential and commercial construction, and have gone back to school part time to get my highschool, so I can go to college for HVAC.

Only my boss know about my hobby, as I don't really get into my personal life with clients ( I made the mistake of telling a client that I'm a hunter and we lost a contract because of it:rolleyes:)) most people who do know are either scared and won't come over or think it's cool, or have weird questions like "are they venomous" or "aren't they illegal".

Oh and of course my landlord knows, she's not please but when she said I had to get rid of the Snake I offered to just move instead lol.

it's unfortunate that something of that magnitude is what it took for so many to appreciate those who serve us daily. I guess even the darkest of clouds has a silver lining.

I am a HS Science teacher. A lot of my animals moonlight in the classroom most of the year. Right now I have a cornsnake, a blue-tongue skink, a crested gecko and five turtles in my classroom, along with some furry animals (hamsters) and 19 newly hatched baby chicks which we will keep for two weeks until they grow wing feathers.

My coworkers see my zoo of a classroom and so it never shocks them that I have a home zoo, too. In fact, I bring a lot of my home animals in for school events.

some think it's odd, some think it's scary, it seems most are semi fascinated. most co-workers I've had who've thought I was odd thought so before they found out about the snakes.

Lol this is great and probably true for me as well I've juggled and hula hooped on lunch since I've started there so that description of me might have already been formed haha. Most do seen somewhat fascinated, but they also seem to think a ball python can kill you LOL just the typical unknowing.

 That was my plan, until I made the mistake of telling everyone the breeder's chosen name for my first BP. I was considering naming her Persephone, but once I had introduced her to people as "Donuts", it stuck! Maybe another species will take the Olympian route :rolleye2:

I'm a massage therapist. I work in a small multi-disciplinary clinic with chiropractors and acupuncturists. All my co-workers and some of my patients know everything about my slither-babies. In fact, one of the other massage therapists and I got on the conversation of snakes two years ago and realized we'd both always wanted one. We egged each other on to get one. I got my BP first, then he got his shortly thereafter. We're now growing our personal collections, while starting to get into a few hobby breeding projects together. Our co-workers are quite used to our constant snake talk ;)

I think everyone pretty much knows about my snake obsession! Some love it and some hate it but most will look at my pics haha! I work with a Doctor that has snakes too so we talk a lot and people listen in. I ride horses competitively also and now some of the barn girls are picking up the random King snakes that they find in the stalls and one of the girls now has 2 BPs. :)
