Reptiblr
Has anyone noticed that "reptiblr" (the reptile section of tumblr) is uh... Horrible?
-
That's because it's tumblr (says the person who's on tumblr every day, oops, shhh...)
But eeeh yeah, it's full of a lot of young people who are overburdened with a great deal of passion, but haven't yet had the life experience to temper in with some chill and common sense. Post cute pics, keep to your corner, block the more volatile people to keep them from showing up on your dash if they stress you out and take a break if you need a breather.
(I will say it tends to be a lot more stable and easy going that most of the reptile facebook groups I've encountered which is just sad, considering. )
-
Tumblr itself has various *groups* full of angry youthful special snowflakes who enjoy online bullying while using *education/justice* as their excuse, not even just in the reptiblr section. :s But yeah, have you seen some of the reptile facebook groups (not naming specifics)? It's more or less the same, except with those from the previous generation. LOL
I just post my snake/dog photos there and make no further comments with the post!

Re: Reptiblr
It's absolutely chaotic in there! I've had a normal tumblr for years, but I decided I wanted to start one solely dedicated to my BP's thinking it would be a fun way to connect with people without trying to sell them snakes; just swap cute pictures. I didn't realize that reptiblr was an army of reptile warriors who are determined to bring to ruin anyone being "irresponsible." I've never seen the word "arboreal" so overused...
-
That "arboreal" reminds me, not only are they an army of reptile warriors... Some even provide INCORRECT info, and unfortunately have a ton of followers, so all their followers listen to them. I had a reblog once with someone arguing with me that ball pythons can climb (which is fine, to an extent... they "can" climb), then a reblog of that reblog stating: "Thank you, now I know more! I'm going to get a 5 foot tall terrarium for my ball python, so he has a lot of space to climb! Can't wait!"
... I just gave up there. LOL
-
Re: Reptiblr
That's absolutely what I'm talking about lol. There's this big debate going on right now about "semi arboreal" ball pythons. It's whatever. If you want to put sticks in there for your snake to sit on, that's great. But one of those giant snake blogs is basically going around telling people that ball pythons NEED to climb, and how DARE anyone say they might get hurt from climbing. It's just crazy. I'm considering just deleting my blog for fear I might lose my mind and join the arguing chaos. I just want to know where these kids get their information. They're quick to condemn anyone for "putting the ball python in danger," but apparently that doesn't include falling from the top of a 5 foot enclosure. They're literally re-blogging posts about ball pythons falling and saying "see! They're resilient!" It's just weird.
-
Oh god haha... maybe it's the same person who talked to me.
Let's just sit and watch them rave, and post cute pics. :s What tumblr should be for! The way discussions/reblogs work is so weird and inconvenient anyway.

baha. I only went there for the snakes in hats! I'm just feeling very attacked right now *cries* :P

Pfft I'll be their huckleberry if you want to link the post. Could be a troll just causing trouble if they're being argumentative and talking about 5 foot high enclosures.
Again, kids on tumblr are full of a lot of good intentions and not enough life experience to have better judgement. I have tubs that are about a foot high- just about double that of standard rack tubs- specifically so I can have some thick, sturdy branches for my snakes to climb on if they so choose. I also have a deep aspen bed for burrowing, if they so choose. Guess what? One of my snakes likes climbing, and one completely ignores the branches to burrow! Some snakes enjoy using their environment and I give them the option because I am a believer in giving captive animal enrichment, but 5 feet is, well, extreme to put it mildly.

Re: Reptiblr
One of the Tumblr users saw this thread I guess and I've made a mortal enemy out of myself. Oops.

Re: Reptiblr
Ha! That's hilarious. I don't use Tumblr, for any reasons, but I recently read someone somewhere going on about how they prefer Tumblr for all their animal care facts and what-not. I was a little baffled!

I'm sorry but I loled my ass off over this thread. Tumblr is nuts!!!

I know the answer to that one - idiot pet store owners/employees who spout off nonsense with zero facts backing them up. This isn't even restricted to PetSmart/PetCo. I've heard ridiculously false statements from small mom & pop type stores. I'm sure some of their nonsense is an effort to drive sales, but I've discovered an increasing intolerance for their continued spread of incorrect information. Which is sad - I've actually bought a couple snakes from one place, but now I can barely stand the owner and the store itself because of the bad practices that are not only prevalent there, but encouraged with the information he passes onto his customers. I've 'discussed' several things with the owner, but it really comes back to he either doesn't care, isn't willing to change, doesn't see a problem with how he does things, or doesn't think that someone with less experience than him could possibly know more about how to care for an animal than him.
Things I've heard in a pet store -
"BP are arboreal." (Maybe your tumbler people have been to this store?)
"Het Red Axanthic is a recessive that is getting it's name changed to Black Back." (HRA is a co-dom. It is NOT getting it's name changed, and while it is in the same complex as Lace Black Back, the two are more like Black Pastel to Cinnamon...which are also in the same complex.)
"Reptiles don't have salmonella. That's a chicken thing." (Not all reptiles have salmonella, but they can and often carry it without showing symptoms. Some are affected by it and they can die from it. Without testing, you'll never know which ones are carrying it.)
"You want to get a 20 gallon tank for your baby ball python so they can grow into it." (While possible, not something I would tell a first time BP owner with zero experience and no clue.)
"This spider comes from a good line, so it doesn't have wobble." (...)
"It's safe to co-hab two snakes of the same size, but you'll have to buy a bigger tank so they have more room." (!!!)
:sigh2:

Re: Reptiblr
Reptiblr, like all of the various tumblr communities is dominated with the loud miss informed youth who refuses to hear that they do not know everything, and refuse to learn. I tend to practice ignoring the people who are toxic and just mind my own business and follow people who are helpful and not the infamous "loud toxic youth". (Not saying all of them are youth or all youth are like that, just my general observation is that the loudest tend to be between 12-17)

see THIS POST is exactly what I'm talking about. The rage factor is out of this world. Someone simply pointed out that reptiblr dog piles people who are simply announcing that they got a new pet, and one of the HUGE reptile blogs, who is 90% aggressive to everyone I might add, flipped :cens0r::cens0r::cens0r::cens0r:.
Reptiblr is such an unpleasant place
-
Oh my dear. That was so convoluted and there was no point other than to be snide, holier than thou, and just put everyone else down to make yourself feel better.
And some one of the "facts" made me scratch my head.
this is why I don't use social media. I'm sure someone would catch me on a really bad day with a bag of llama bait and bear traps.
