    New Carpet
    Well,

After a year or so owning a kingsnake, and longer than that lusting after a carpet python, I finally brought my new boy home.
He is a Caramel Jag from Psychotic Exotics.

First things first, I had to procure a new cage from Ed Lilley at Constrictors Northwest. Luckily for me, he had a 3'x2'x18" in stock.
I furnished it with some grapewood from Home Depot, cypress/coco coir mix for substrate, a Pro-Products RHP (running off a Herpstat 2), 2 hides from LLL Reptile (I'm a local), and some PVC perches that I sanded with 120 grit to make them a little grippier.
Thanks to GIO for sanity checking me on the thermostat placement!

And a couple of pictures of the first handling session today. He had 8 days to settle in totally unperturbed, a rat, and two additional days to rest before the photo session.

Gorgeous snake. I'm trying to locate one but they are hard to find, in my part of the world (Eastern Canada).

    Nice looking Jag there Bright!

Once he settles in you will probably find him out of his hide most of the time.

    Congrats :)

Drool! What a beauty. Carpets are pretty fun, if not endearingly difficult from
    time to time. Enjoy!

Great looking CP and setup. Did you make the pvc perches? If so, how? If not, where to get them?

Considering getting a carpet so please explain the endearingly difficult statement. I want to know what I'm getting into.

Carpets are faster and more deliberate when handling when compared to BPs and Boas. They can be flighty. I especially find the adults more headstrong. That said, if they want to go to a particular area while being handled, they can be quite persistent and wear you down. But they are docile and still a lot of fun to handle. :)

I bought some 1" PVC and some plastic closet rod hangers- the kind where one side is slotted so the rod drops in from above. I cut the PVC to length, and roughed it up with sandpaper. Then I mounted the closet rod hangers in the cage (after lots and lots of measuring) with a single through-bolt each, and a short screw to keep them from rotating.
I ran a single bolt through each of the non-slotted rod hangers and keyed the Perches to it using a hand drill. That way the perches can't spin. I capped the rough ends of the bolt/nuts with a yellow wire nut that I stuck on with hot glue. Hopefully that will alleviate the possibility of cuts/scrapes.
I can post some pictures, or just pm them if you want more info.

Mine does- the garden section sells a lot of cacti/air plants, and they sell HUGE chunks of grapewood which I believe you are supposed to plant the air plants in. I was able to get two sections (they are seriously huge) for, I think, $9 and $14 each. Way cheaper than I've seen from any reptile suppliers. They were a little damp so I let them cook in the sun for a week or so before I put them in the cage.

Yeah he seems happy. I really want to find him a girlfriend now!

That's a great looking girl, Reinz- and yes, my guy was hanging out in a little pile by his front door this morning. I didn't get a picture though.

I think you must be near me! Maybe I will have to hire you down the road to make perches for me. I'm not a very good DIYer. LOL!

yup, BPs they are not. they especially like to go up. Also, if there is anything in range they can wrap their tail around and cling to, they will. most of mine no matter how calm feel the need to take a rare but occasional shot at me, I think it's just for chuckles. what you're getting in to Terminal is keeping very awesome snakes!

Agreed. I think they are all awesome but I'm looking forward to a more "substantial" snake.

Keeping in mind individual personalities, I find my girl to be faster, more reactive, and stubborn. She trusts me(and usually only me), but she'll randomly sass me by hissing or striking when she's not in the mood for my human antics. She's only bitten me once, though, when she was startled. Long strike-range, too. Love the crap out of her, though lol. She's intelligent and curious, I'd almost call it playful. She loooves to roam around her enclosure and figure out the various tubes, hammocks, and perches I've put in for her. Definitely a different experience with carpets.

    Ok two from today...
I added a large chunk of grapewood with a couple of two inch deck screws in order to both provide a larger area for him to get close to the heat panel, and to partially obscure the perches so he might feel a bit more comfortable on them during the day time. Basically, I wanted to enhance his access to hotter areas.

I also added a rooftop hide which I don't think he has discovered yet... Here he is warming up after a brief handling session today.
