Got to handle this lesser(?) today at Petsmart. The employee told me at first that they stopped letting people hold the herps because they would get dropped ):<

When I told her I had a ball python of my own she decided she would let me hold the little buddy!

They don't know its sex; they are selling it for $119 which is not bad for a lesser, right?

That's probably not a bad price for one.

Bit high in my area but it seems to have some age on it so it's worth imo. He/she looks really good surprisingly considering it's petsmart.

Buying from PetSmart perpetuates the cycle and rewards the big box store for keeping animals in bad conditions. It also rewards the snake mills who supply them.

Yikes /: Did you tell her anything?

I've been to one Petsmart so far that had subpar husbandry but the other 3 I've been to seem to keep their animals at basically good health.

    Pretty snake!

I haven't been in to a Petsmart in ages, but I was at a Petco a while back. I commented on the horrible shed their Pinstripe was in, and the lady said that she was buying some milk later to soak him in. I've never heard of soaking a snake in milk. She insisted that's what she always does.

Actually most of the Petsmarts in my area take decent care of their reptiles. I mean they aren't in the optimum setup but I have seen far worse, Petco comes to mind there. $119 doesn't seem like too bad of price but at the end of the day, if you like the guy, then it will be up to you whether its worth it or not. I like that chameleon picture though, hes like screaming "sabe me jebus!!!" :P I also like that little corn snake.

Lol, did you laugh at them? If someone told me that, I doubt I could hold back the laughter :D

I wouldn't dare even to step into my local Petco or PetSmart never mind hold any of the reptiles, they got mites.

I'd wait until a semi local reptile show and get your pick of at least 100+ better priced gorgeous snakes

That would be my concern too.

BTW, I took that little stripey cutie for a milk snake.
    Anyone know for sure?

Yep definitely an albino milksnake, judging from the pattern and what is normally available at PetSmart I would guess Sinaloan milksnake.

What prices could I find a butter/lesser for at a reptile show? I don't have a car or anyone who would want to take me to one so it's really hard to get to reptile shows. I know Lubbock hosts a repticon but for basically half a year I've been checking the website and it still says the date for the next one is "TBA"

Whether online or at shows you are looking at $50 Male / $75 Female

Oh, wow. I didn't realize show prices would be the same as online prices, considering that online prices usually seem to account for shipping. I looked by "least expensive" on morphmarket and those prices were pretty much what I saw, but then of course $50 shipping comes in and I figured it wouldn't be that different from the pet store price and I wouldn't have to deal with the stress of shipping for both me and the animal.

But if show prices are really that good then maybe it's smarter to just wait for a show to come around and pay someone to drive me.

I called a petsmart to ask if they had hopper mice. The lady on the phone said no, they only have regular mice, not any particular kind. I tried to explain what I meant, but she just seemed confused by the question.

They do sell reptiles at that store, too.

Repticon Lubbock didn't seem to go real well. I wouldn't expect them back in Lubbock anytime soon honestly. Other than that there really hasn't been any shows local to the Lubbock area. NARBC Arlington is always a good show but that's about 4.5 hour drive. There will be a new show happening in Amarillo the last weekend of April and that will be the closest. As well they have been talking about going to Lubbock soon but no dates yet. Are you solely looking for a Lesser?

Yes, I have encountered a problem in the past with asking over the phone whether they had fuzzy rats, and the employee telling me that fuzzies are a kind of mice.

I'm not particularly interested in putting stores on a blacklist because a particular employee didn't know the ins and outs of every brand of food they keep in their store, especially since Arctic Mice doesn't cary anything called hoppers, crawlers, weaned, etc. The BPs I saw at this store were being adequately taken care of, they were housed separately, and the humidity seemed to be good in spite of them using analog hygrometers.

Thanks for the heads up. I moved to Lubbock I think about 2 weeks after the last Lubbock repticon so I totally missed out on it and I don't know anyone here who's interested so I couldn't ask anything about it.

I'm actually not actively looking per se, or I would order online like I did with Donuts, but I saw this kid in the store that's about 15 minutes away (Uber distance, yay!) and considered it. It seems like a pretty vibrant lessers compared to others I've seen in person that were a little more gray so I thought it might be worth it.

But they don't sell live feeders. You would have had to specify frozen is you want sized feeders. ;)

Remember you pay for quality too.
I have seen males for $50 to $100 and females for $100 to $150.
There are so many out there, just find one that grabs your eye. ;)

I too have to say that people always look for the cheapest thing they can find. I bought my enchi extreamly cheap but he is still a beautiful enchi not a lower quality one that you would expect for what i paid. You need to balance cost with quality. Dont buy the cheap low quality but a nice snake that you find attractive at a good price now that is the one you buy

Hmm. I know I didn't get great pictures, but is this BP I posted a good quality or not? The colors seem good but I don't know anything else to look for in the butter/lesser gene. Is there an ideal pattern, or eye color or something?

Pit, thank you for the photo references, that's very helpful! Your animals are beautiful.

So am I looking for brightness, contrast, and cleanness of pattern? I notice the flames/blushing on that first male is pretty much all over the body and basically covers the dark pattern entirely. Was he darker when he was young, like the other two, or pretty much that golden from the start?

I think I'm going to go back to that Petsmart and look at the BP again with a more scrutinizing eye and take pictures of it under the more normal lighting of the store rather than in its cage with the red bulb interfering.

This is the best photo I have of him. He is probably a week or two out of the egg here.

Its not always about what we think looks good.
For example, pastels....... brown outs don't really bother me IF it has killer blushing and flames. Other people wont touch a browned out pastel.

Its about what catches your eye. In a lesser I like bright highlighter yellow.

I see. Thanks for taking the time to explain, I really appreciate it. This Petsmart lesser might just be coming with me yet! I remember the yellows were nice and bright.
