Snaketacular on Discovery
So - opinions on the show that aired tonight? I found it interesting, and some of the points were very nicely presented, but overall I've seen Youtube collages that I thought were better. There was way too much dramatization and 'Freak Show' attitude, and way too little actual fact. I did like the discourse from the guest personalities about what people had done wrong, and what not to do.

Re: Snaketopia on Discovery
From the 10 minutes I watched of it I didn't like it. The only part I like was the experts giving their opinions. I thought that the YouTube vids they showed hurt more than they helped. I mean they played a vid of a baby babbon squealing as it was being constricted by a large python. It even made me feel bad, a extreme snake lover, so it must have made the general public feel horrible. I don't know maybe it got better but after the first 10 mins I stopped watching.
Overall I feel that that hurt the reptile community more than it helped. Those are my thoughts I would love to hear what other people thought sorry for the rant but these things make me mad. I hope venom hunters is way better.

Re: Snaketopia on Discovery
Does Discovery put there stuff online anywhere? Like Hulu? I don't have cable so I can't judge.

Eventually some of their shows end up on Netflix but usually a season or two after they air.
I don't have CATV or DISH either, and don't miss it.

Snaketopia on Discovery
Are you talking about this special called snaketacular? I haven't watched it yet but I have the link saved

Yeaahhhh...."Snaketacular".... :please:
My take on it:
There were a number of positive elements that I was very glad to see, although the premise of the show seemed awfully lame and lazy to me. And their Top Five countdown was....well, I already said "lame" didn't I? It was LAME. Not even considering their "#1" mention...the first four were just stupid. If that's the "TOP" content that they have to offer on snakes, there's no way I can see them pulling together an entire week of actual quality content for some future "Snake Week".
All in all...throughout the whole show, I was thinking, "Well...ok...not great...but overall, I think the positives outweigh the negatives. A small handful of the videos they shared were decent and the king cobra capture video was great. The experts talked like real experts that respected the animals, and that was awesome. So the scales balanced on the positive.
Until their "#1" Discovery Snake Moment at the end. SMH That's like enjoying an oohhhkay meal at Denny's and then taking a bite of a cream pie that's gone rancid. No matter how good those french fries were earlier, the entire meal suddenly SUCKED.
:rage:

And I agree with the ending. Snakes regurgitating, and then a snake being killed? This is what Discovery considers quality content?

The snake being killed was their #1 snake moment too. It was held down with a stick, and got its head pounded in with the blunt end of another stick. What a shameful steaming pile of crap courtesy of discovery.

Well I'm glad I didn't watch it. So much for discovery turning over a new leaf

I figured it stood to at least be watched and see what was in it. If another airs... I don't plan on watching. The only real benefit I saw from it was the 'expert analysis' commentary, which was actually beneficial - but it was also common sense, for the most part. Aka 'If you don't know what you are doing, do not mess with venomous snakes' repeated several times over.
I really disliked the theme throughout of 'go get your machete, there are snakes', suggestive of needing a machete to deal with them.
Also, a huge THANK-YOU goes out to MarkS for fixing the title!

I record and watch a show called snake city. I don't know what network it's on, but it's very interesting, exciting to watch, And the guy and gal on the show genuinely care about the welfare of the animals that they're dealing with. Most of which are venomous. Definitely worth the watch if you ask me.

yes, I've seen this one. very good. they remove snakes from an urban environment in Australia, Darwin I think, and return them to more remote natural habitat.
caught about the last 15 minutes of snaketacular. it was ridiculous. the #1 snake moment was a completely senseless killing of a wild lancehead that was in hiding. the justification being 'It's either him or me". I guess the option of moving on and not molesting the snake was not on the table.
