My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
So I've recently seen these progression threads where people post pics and basically show everyone how their snakes are growing if I'm not mistaken. I thought it would be fun and I might as well start now that she's still rather small. So this is Kayly. She's a female normal (at least I'm pretty sure. Please tell me if you think she's anything else) and she's almost a year old (breeder said she hatched February 2015). http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...d078a0448f.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...e4fec08e78.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...f623029c6e.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...8a29111d55.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...ac20898415.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...bf0088c22e.jpg http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...fd6795b7ad.jpg And there you go! I'll update soon!

Your girl is a looker :gj:
I loves me some Normals!

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
From the snakes I've seen, I'm thinking she might be small for her age. 😔 I see all this stuff about weight but it's there anything that says average lengths based on age? I don't have a way to weigh her.
-
Very nice normal. :P
You should definitely get some kitchen scales.
-
She does seem on the small side. Are you feeding large enough meals? You can get a kitchen scale for under $15 at any big box store or Amazon. I'd guess she's about 300g.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
I'm feeding the size of her widest part. That what I was told to do. So small mice. She eats really well and sometimes seems hungry after so I could try to feed more at once. I don't want to feed her bigger because I don't want her to choke.
-
I just reread and see she's almost a year old. That's very small for a year. How often is she eating? She won't choke and should be able to take adult mice fine or I'd get rat pups. Small mice are too small for her.

You are missjudging the size of the prey, that BP can take an adult mice or a rat pup probably even larger too.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Change to rats, if she get used to mice she might be picky later and wont take mice. Once she grows you will need several adult mice every time.

She may be a bit on the small side, but she's definitely a cutie! I really love her darker coloration. Her brown reminds me of milk chocolate.
This is my baby, Maytag. He's currently eating rat pups, but we'll be switching him to rat hoppers next week. He's probably about 5-6 months old. I got him at the end of August, but forgot to ask for his hatch date.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Strange. I'd read everywhere not to go bigger than their widest segment, so that's what I've been doing. She eats weekly.

I've actually heard the same thing from a lot of people, and it IS a good thing to go by if you're not sure what your snake should be eating. However, by feeding it just the size of its girth, from what I've heard, you are just feeding it what it needs to sustain. If you get it a prey size just slightly larger than his girth, you are feeding him with room to grow. Don't quote me on that, because I'm no expert, but I figure it makes sense.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
It does. I'm just worries about the choking possibility because this is my first pet at all and I would hate if she go hurt like that.

She won't choke. The worst that could happen is that you feed a rat too large and she regurgitates. It sucks for the snake when that happens, but it doesn't kill the animal. Again, that's worst case scenario. I never like to feed as big as possible, I like the prey item to be manageable for the snake but still large enough to add weight to your snake with each feeding. I can tell you that your snake can absolutely handle a rat pup though.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Are they expensive? I'm paying about $2-$3 for each mouse right now. 🐭
-
Where are you getting your mice from? I've find that the larger chain pet stores (petco, petsmart, etc.) sell their feeders for more. Smaller reptile or in general pet specialty stores sell their feeders for less. I'm currently buying for four snakes, but at my local reptile store, they are selling their rat pups for a little over a dollar. If you shop around, you'll probably be able to find feeders for pretty cheap.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
I'm buying from the only locally owned per store that my friend's mom owns. I would never buy from a large pet store.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
My baby girl! It's feeding day! Going to try to feed bigger than I had been. Super chill and docile but acting super hungry in the cage. 😋 http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...2905e166f2.jpg However I did notice that about a week after the last shed, I noticed that weird looking skin by her eye again. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...6f3743484a.jpg

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
I also did learn that the store I get her food from doesn't sell anything smaller than medium to full sized rats and no pups.
-
Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
So I am still not sure if her eggs were laid in February or if that's when she hatched. All I know is that her tub said February 2015 so I'm assuming my baby girl is a year old this month. Just warming up some! http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02...08e6bb5fe9.jpg

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
She's still a tiny thing...but I got her a new hide! The cool side one broke on me last time I did a full tank clean. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02...2f6b9e2015.jpg
-
How cute! She seems cuddly just like mine. About the prey size, my snake ate a small rat (40-45g) this week and she's definetly smaller than yours. It can be surprising!
-
Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Yeah. My store doesn't sell small rats and she refuses f/t.
-
Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Oh goodness. She likes the new hide. I wish I had room for it on the warm side. Even though it looks too big for her, there's a spot perfectly sized where the ceiling is lower than her other hide where she fits a lot more snug and secure. Humidity issues are almost completely resolved now that there's damp moss around the hides and tank.

My baby is blue again... http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02...4c38293d04.jpg I had a VERY tightly supervised feeding but she still ate. I'm surprised but glad.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Success! I came home and Kayly had shed in one solid piece! http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02...dc3dc6ba0a.jpg The skin measures 28 inches! Last time she shed in one piece (2 months ago) it was 22. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02...f058ce7d4d.jpg I LOOOVE that freshly shed color! http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/02...7ab41a57b5.jpg
-
congrats on the perfect shed. :) keep in mind tho, that shed skin can stretch. so it's not the most accurate measurement. measuring her actual body length yourself or weighing her would be a better way to track growth. :gj:

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
I don't have any sort of scale yet though. I'll be able to get one soon and then I'll start weighing.

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
Enjoying a nutritious meal and about to shed! Kayly's so big now. It would appear that the "inline image" option that was letting me add pictures is gone now? The post on this topic doesn't help because I'm on a Windows Phone. Any ideas?

Host your image on a site like Photobucket or Imgur, then use the photo button in the Advanced Reply options to share the direct image link. :)

Oh. Those are cool! This is a really good pic I got of Kayly the other day. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...579fba784a.jpg

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
It's been a while since I've posted and Kayly's getting big! I don't have good growth examples right now but a couple random pics. I got up and rummaged around the room only to look up and find her looking at me as if to tell me to "shut the heck up". http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...899ad04bd4.jpg Then she started coming out to 'splore. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...5cacc4efb2.jpg She then quickly changed her mind...LOL.

Hopefully soon! I have to move in the next week or two so there's a chance I may have to rehome her, which would make me so sad. But not many places for rent in my area allow any sort of animals. :/

Re: My Normal Progression Thread (feel free to share yours too)
I saw her like this last and found a vid of my first feeding with her and she's way more than doubled in size within the 5 months I've had her. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...fcefdc8a7f.jpg
