Do I switch to pvc?
So I currently have a gorgeous large glass terrarium for my bp. It's set up nice and perfect but I move a lot for work and it's such a pain to move!
So I am thinking of switching to a pvc terrarium. Roughly same measurements but not as high. I imagine way lighter!
I feel the pvc won't look as nice and I feel silly paying so much to downgrade to something that doesn't look as great. But I've heard lots of good things. Does anyone suggest the move to pvc? Will it make my life easier for ease of moving, less space etc

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
I definitely recommend it. I've animal plastics. I have two t8s and I love the way they look. As far as moving goes, any enclosure is going to be a pain to move. The t8 is lighter than a glass 40g breeder or any big sized tank. Plus, it is much easier to maintain heat and humidity in a pvc enclosure.

Pvc cages are very light, look excellent, are stackable, easy to clean and hold heat and humidity perfectly.
It would certainly be easier to move and they take much less space

Wow that's gorgeous! I guess with a little research on heating, and light it I'll be good to go. I just know I won't get much money for my glass terrarium and I'll have to switch from a heat lamp to a radiant panel, aka more money.... But I should be use to that in this hobby!

Animal Plastics is a great company and have great customer service. Really glad I chose to purchase from them.

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
Prices are excellent as well. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm thinking about switching to a sliding glass or acrylic front-opening system. How do you lock swing-open doors with hinges in the front??

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
Love my Animal Plastics enclosures! Easy heating and no humidity problems. I think that PVC enclosures are a lot more esthetically pleasing than glass terrariums but that's just my opinion.
Here's my setup:

I ordered from greg west at cornels world and it took two weeks from quote to being at my door. Highly recommend him if you're in canada.
SKO - why don't you like sliding doors? I love mine, it makes feeding time super easy and they come off in a second for cleaning

I have four tanks and three PVC running currently. My plans are to have everyone in PVC this year.

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
Great advice! Can I get away with a 2x2x1 or should I go with the 4x2x1. I fee that's rather large!

This is one my guys in a 36x24x14. Plenty big for a male. I have my larger girls in 48x24x14 inch units. When I took this shot he was sitting around 600g for a size reference.

I do like the sliding doors but I can definitely see the how the front opening doors would be beneficial.

SO beautiful! I love it! Also probably makes maintenance easier as well.

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
We're switching (as budget permits) from glass to AP enclosures. I prefer the white to black, personally, as it keeps the room they're in looking lighter.
If I ever win the lotto (just as soon as I buy a ticket), I'm finishing the upgrade in one swell foop :D

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
Great advice everyone. I have a pvc cage on order! My question is how did you guys all light yours? It looks great all lighted up but I have no idea how you do that without drilling holes haha. If it's inside won't the snake burn itself?

Animal plastics now has an LED option... they cut a channel in the PVC and will put the LED's in that channel. That option isn't on their site yet, but I was told if you call them, they will do it for you.

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
I just read some articles on cheap led strips u can buy any where and put in. Just silicone it in and looks great. Produces no heat or danger. I'm more worried about experimenting with heat and don't really see any way around getting a radiant heat panel. So expensive!

Re: Do I switch to pvc?
We use LEDs made for aquarium. They require drilling a hole for the power cord and pilot holes for the screws they mount with. The PVC AP uses drills about the same as pine, so it's an easy job, especially if you put the light in with the cage upside-down (not fighting gravity). The lights we use are sealed to resist moisture (they're not submersible ones), so no worries about a little overspray when misting or cleaning. And LED lights don't generate enough heat to be a worry about burns.
I haven't done the math, but remember that, unlike a heat lamp, there are no bulbs to buy/replace with a RHP. And the PVC enclosures are better at insulating than glass, so you will probably use less power with an RHP. There's an up-front investment, but I think an RHP is more economical over time.
Oh, another possible consideration is stacking - you can stack PVC cages heated with UTH and RHPs, not so much when you have the heat lamp sitting on top. Because BPs are like potato chips. [emoji3]
