how to back up incubator thermostat?
So last season I lost three of my best clutches to a power outage and thermostat malfunction. This season I am going to back up my thermostat with either a dimmer or another thermostat but was wondering how to set it up. I use a nature spirit incubator if that makes a difference.

plug your thermostat into the back up's power plug set the back up's probe near your current's probe set the back up to power off at a few degrees higher then the current thermostat. but most people will tell you that having an incubator with out a battery back up or a generator will end in heartache over and over.

One good clutch could pay for a small backup generator and a spare thermostat. That's what I keep around. The incubator should hold temps for a while if your not at home when the power dies.

The incubator held temps well. It was my thermostat that reset and caused the temps to go over 100. i use a ve-200 for my incubator and that was the first time I have ever had a problem with it

Did the stat fry or just go goofy when the power came back? Never had an issue with my herpstats, but all bets are off if the device takes a surge. A decent surge protector might be a good investment too.

Just a thought... but IMO, all reptile equipment should be on a surge protector. Just in case.
Ive had a surge wipe out lights before.

Granted, it was when the box on the pole outside blew up/caught on fire. So it was special circumstances, but my eyes were opened to the possibility. I was lucky that the glass didnt make it into my enclosure.

Very few generators provide a smooth enough sine wave for a proportional t-stat like a Herpstat. Honda makes about the only generator with a smooth power invertor that will do the job, unless you want to install a $5000 automatic backup system for your entire shop.

the thermostat, once reset works fine. it just went a little crazy and killed all of my eggs.

we rent our home so installing an outdoor generator is not an option. i was looking at portable indoor generators that do not need to be installed. there is a duracell powersource 1800 that i was looking at. it holds a 10 hours charge unlike the battery backup packs that only last an hour...if that

Not trying to start an argument here, but there are a lot more options than just Honda, unless a herpstat is even more sensitive than a computer power supply. I'm aware of the issues with trying to use non inverter type generators with the herpstats, but I thought any generator capable of producing clean enough power for a computer would be OK with a herpstat.Back to the OPs issue, never heard of that happening before, and I wouldn't use that stat on eggs again. I don't own any of the VE stats, but I have most other brands, and they all just go back to the set temps after a power failure. Not sure of the best solution hers, outside of using two stats in-line.

I have a Helix and 5 VE200s and they all go back to set temperatures too. Only thing to reset is the clock.
I would contact Reptile Basics about the setting changing on that thermostat.
We get a lot of rolling brown out here in San Antonio.

Contact Herpstat on acceptable Generators, but this is right in the manual.

I have borrowed this Ryobi and had no problems with any of my electronics.
I just cant justify purchase when most of our power outs are in the summers when everyone is running their a/c full on.
If the herpstat is that picky, I wouldn't want to use them.

thank you all for the awesome advice. I am nervous using a fuel powered generator inside of my home. i will have to contact reptile basics and use two thermostats this season. just cant go through the heartbreak like i did last season.
