Anyone with a split tongue? :D
This is a slightly odd post, heh, but I'm curious, anyone here with a split tongue? I figure us snake lovers might be more inclined to have such a unique body modification.
(I don't have my tongue split, but I must admit I love the look and have been thinking about getting it done for a while...but I'm a wus when it comes to pain so probably not!)

I'm getting mine done this year! I'm so excited for it!

Think about it seriously for a minimum of one year before acting.
-
I wouldn't do it because, well, how do you explain that on a first date. You kiss her and there's practically two tongues there?!
Still cool to see though. Carlisle, be sure to show us when you get it done!
-
Don't do anything you can't change back later.

What kind of kissing are you doing on a first date!?!
Call me ol'fashion!

I don't, and I wouldn't. There's a huge risk of infection from it, and once it's done, there's no going back. That said, I do like tattoos - but I wait at least a year, usually more, to make sure I really like the design before I start working on having one done. I only have tattoos done in areas that aren't visible unless I want them to be. That can't be said about your tongue. Also, consider how you're going to talk or eat while it's healing... and the effect it'll have on your speech even after it's healed. Those that I've spoken to who have it done usually seem to have ended up with a lisp. Now, if none of those problems are a discouragement, then go for it! Hope you enjoy it!
Honestly, I've never related split tongue surgery with snakes. Their tongues are completely different, and serve a different purpose.
-
I have a double piercing, got one at 18 and the other at 21. Did have to learn how to talk a little different (to avoid a lisp) and can't roll my 'R's like I used to. They are farther set back so not overly noticeable. Have had corporate jobs and never been an issue. The tongue does swell a lot when healing, that's for sure, but it heals rather quickly. I agree with waiting a bit to make sure you're comfortable with the decision before doing any body modification.

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
I'm taking a week off after getting it done so I'll have time to heal and get the stitches out. I just wish it wasn't such a long drive to get it done.

Haven't done it yet! ;D Lol.
But speech wise, I'd be terrified. I also bite my own ONE tongue enough as it is, so I'm pretty sure I wouldn't last long with that in there.

nah, i just have tattoos. no piercings or gauges either.

I will definitely post pics when I get it done. If all goes well I should be getting in done in about 6-8 weeks.

What is the appeal of getting this done? How much does it cost and where do you go to get it done?

It varies from person to person for the reason they want it done. I don't have a particular reason, it's always intrigued me. Cost varies depending on who performs it (artist, doctor, etc). Most body modification artists travel so you usually have to wait until they cone to yur area. I'm lucky that my guy has a shop and it's only a 4 hour drive.

It can be reversed with surgery. Some actually slowly grow back together. I've been stretching my ear lobes off and on for the last 20 years. Their currently at 3/4". Check out bme zine for some crazy stuff.
-
Don't have that but had my tongue pierced years ago (it swelled up a lot, and did hurt when done but healed very fast), I ended up getting rid of that piercing 3 years later as it was causing speech issues (lisp).

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
I'm going for my tongue split consultation on Sunday. I'm so excited!
-
When I was doing some (unrelated) research, I spoke with a doctor about how well tongues heal. I was surprised to find out that they heal very quickly.
I wouldn't have it done. I don't like anything at all in my mouth, so no piercings etc.
That said, that's ME. It's your body and if you have put enough thought into it, and you can afford it then you should go for it. I have tattoos. They have not affected me in any negative manner at all. No one ever looked at them and thought less of me or my abilities that I've noticed.
Okay, one uber-Christian old guy said a couple nasty things but I don't count him, as he was some random person who felt the need to comment to a complete stranger. No boss, no co-worker, no client... no one that matters has ever mentioned them except to ask about them because they thought they were neat.
I know one or two people who have tongue splits, but only in passing and I never asked about it. One has a lisp, but the other one doesn't. I've known people with small tongue piercings who lisp quite bad too though.
TL;DR? Do what makes YOU happy. And post pictures! Especially ones right after the surgury!
-
Nice post/thought annarac5 just don't understand for what reason would people get that done, forget about what kissing is going to be like your taste of foods can get ruined.. i wanted to get the tongue piercing that goes across the tongue and found out my taste buds wouldn't appreciate it that much, your connecting 2 parts of your tongue.. See now if you cut that in half just imagine what crazy outcomes could/would happen....;)
-
Hahaha... I happened to see the topic of this thread while looking in the forums and just had to check out everyone's posts.
If you DO get it done, it CAN be undone... As someone else said, sometimes the halves will slowly grow back together. Or you can get it re-attached, although I'm sure it would affect your taste buds and leave quite a scar. Anyway, the wonderful thing about body modification is that it's deeply personal, and if you are going to do it, ROCK ON!!! I'm so excited for you!! I'm a big body mod fan myself, and while I haven't gotten anything super crazy, I appreciate the artistic and expressive nature of it in all forms. Post pics!!!

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
I had my consultation on sunday and I have to get my tongue web removed before I can go ahead with the split. It looks like the split won't happen until may or June but it's still happening!

I do not have my tongue split and would never do it intentionally. That being said I did accidently bite a hole through my entire tongue several years ago. I did not go to the doctor, and probably wasn't the best at keeping it clean. I was out with friends and decided the best cure was Granddad's cough medicine. In hindsight it probably was not the best idea. Anyways it healed incredibly quickly and I have not lost any sense of taste.
I can understand where you are coming from. Growing up tattoos were highly frowned upon by my parents and in my town, but I always had a fascination with them. Now I have lots and do not regret them for a second. I say be yourself and do what makes you happy as long it does not truly effect other people.
-
Man that is one body mod that I freaking adore looking at on other people, but I know it's not a think I'd do to myself.
I'm still debating on whether or not to get and industrial. I really want one, but do I really want to put up with that long of a healing time is the question.

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
Got my web removed today, so phase 1 complete! Hurts a bit and it's bleeding quite a bit but I can't wait to get my split!

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
No no no, had my tongue pierced when I was young and dumb but you can just take it out and it's gone. Split tongue is just a weird look to me. But hey there are tons of people that think my tattoos are weird. So if someone wants to do it, more power to them. But I would seriously let a lot of time pass before you actually go through with it.

Have fun...or as much fun as you can have getting your tongue split. ;)

Wow you're wild car. I've always wanted my tongue pierced but don't have the balls to do it and my common sense just says no no considering all the issues that can arise. Good luck with the split!!! Can't wait to see it and omg you're so crazy!!! Hope they gave you some serious meds beforehand.

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D

I like it! how long does it take somebody to learn how to move each side individually?
-
Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
I can already move them apart and before the swelling kicked in i could cross the halves over each other, but it's hard to do it on command.

Yep I've had my tongue split for almost two decades.

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
Your split tongue looks great! I have had mine for almost 7 years now. It still hasn't gotten old! Can you cross the sides now? I have fond memories of practicing in front of my bathroom mirror :)

Interesting that you can control it! I wonder if that's a genetic thing, like being able to roll your tongue which some people can't do.

Well I am pretty sure you just destroyed anyone saying splitting your tongue will ruin your looks. Simply gorgeous.

Re: Anyone with a split tongue? :D
Haha, why thank you! Part of the reason I love mine so much is that no one would know if I didn't show them...like if I have to wear a suit to work everyday and look totally "normal", at least I can be secretly weird ;)
