Jimmy drowned his food.

Jimmy had not ate since right before Christmas. I took the advice of a member and placed a thawed warmed up one in his tank. He struck it but left if lay. So I turned off all the lights leaving his night light on and dropped one of the normal live ones in his tank. It took him about 2 minutes to strike it, but instead of his normal coiling around it , he drug it over to his water bowl and dunked his head and the mouse under the water for abut 5 seconds, he then brought it back out of the water for a few seconds and continued this dunking process several times until the mouse was dead. He then ate it. I have never see him do this and always watch him eat. Is it normal for them to drown there prey instead of constrict it? It was pretty brutal and the mouse was crying the whole time.

Ha... I only feed F/T, so I've never seen that before. Apparently Jimmy has some anger issues towards mice.

The first time I fed pinkies to the kingsnake hatchlings, the pinkies went down live and crying.
I wasn't expecting that.

It was just odd and I cant find anything online about them drowning their prey. Not gonna lie I was pretty close to crying for the lil mouse.

That's really odd. I don't think they're smart enough to intentionally drown a mouse but does sound like Jimmy is a bit of a sadist.

I don't see why they can't be smart enough. Crocodiles intentionally drown their prey, so why not snakes? Anyway, pretty interesting, I've never heard of that happening before. Tell us of he does it again, maybe film it.

True, but both of those examples also live primarily in the water. I would be really interested to hear if he continues to kill this way too. Maybe he's just making mouse scream music!

It might just be a coincidence that there was water near by and the way he way was coiling and moving the mouse around made it seem like he was drowning it. I also do not think they are smart enough to understand what drowning means.

Mr. Bubbles drowned his rat once, though I suspect it was unintentional. He snatched it up so hard, they both fell into the bowl. Unlike your snake, he kept it wrapped in there until it was gone instead of the repeat dunking. But he did need assistance pulling it out so he could eat it. Every time he tried to grab it to eat, it would just bob away from him. Poor guy looked so upset, it was to funny. But he made room so I could lift it out for him and started searching for its head as soon as I was clear.

I know that doesn't help you out at all, but I thought I would share.

To get back on topic, though, has your snake shown any signs of side tenderness or injury? I'm asking because maybe he's trying to avoid constricting for some reason.

I think it was done intentionally with the OP's python, mainly because of the repeat dunking. He would have just dragged it out if it was a coincidence.

This. Have you investigated if there could be a soreness, this is a very good point. I also second the, get a video if he does it again!
