Dreadfully sorry, Moneypenny. I've used them in the past - but for too long I've been a build-yer-own kinda guy. I know Mle's in your camp though - and we've a couple users with mac right in their names to boot.

This is going to spawn a "show us your rig" thread isn't it :P

oh yes, i'm a mac girl all the way. :) i have a dual g4 right now. pretty nice machine if i may say so myself. i use both mac and pc at work--i'm a web designer so i need to test sites on both platforms to make sure that everything is working properly all around. for the most part i do the designing on the mac and test and do other stuff on the pc like send out mass e-mails, etc.

macs are best for kids to learn how to use computers. My mother is a computer lab technician for an elementary school and all they use is macs...the entire school. Macs were the first type of computer I have ever used and I still like them........but I got stuck using a crappy HP. Seems like all the engineering software is not made for macs. :(

There are those in my family that are die hard Mac fans.. to the point of being 'racist' against windows. *lol*

In fact, we still have an OLD Mac SE/30. I first learned how to use computers on that thing.. when I was 2. We also had a 286. Ah.. memories.

My mom just got a brand new fancy Mac. The name escapes me, but there is no tower, the motherboard and everything is contained right behind the monitor (which is a lovely 17' widescreen).

Personally I'm using a dinosaur. It's a '98 HP with Windows xp. It's a blazin' 500 MHz. My dad is helping me build a new computer.

Hmm, well, the first home computer I ever had was an Apple, but it was a IIe, before there was such a thing as Mac. We then moved on to a Zenith PC and I've only used Apple when forced to since. But then, I've always been one to swap components, write scripts, etc., and that's a lot easier for me to do on non-Apple platforms.

The first computer we had was an IBM PcJr. My friend had an apple IIc :) I've used Mac's, but I haven't messed with them since the early 90's. I wouldn't count the stints I did in the computer lab. Every mac we had in the computer lab seemed to be broken about 90% of the time for some reason or another. I haven't messed around with the new Mac OS but I hear it's pretty sweet.

I just work on a Win XP machine at home, built it myself. Not 100% top of the line, but it'll handle just about any game other than HL2. In fact, it could probably handle HL2, but you'd have the crank the game down quite a bit.

I myself am a billy fan. I really never had any problem with windows that everyone talks about security holes, slowness, and crashing. And trust me I have gone deep into the computer world pushed my computer to its limits good old windows has never really let me down. I guess if you keep some brute force under the hood it works good. Plus im a gamer I really have no choice.

I'm an old UNIX hack from way back, but honestly, I pretty much use all operating systems with the exception of Linux (pretty funny really). I regularly use Windows, OSX, BSD UNIX & SCO UNIX. I basically live in BSD UNIX, but have been using my daughter's iBook a lot lately. OSX is a reasonably sound *nix and Apple has always made some of the best hardware around.

    My two cents...

Heh - so that begs the question why no linux?

I've always patchworked for good hardware component by component from the mobo on out - unless you are talking about OEM complete systems liek Dell vs Gateway or such (not much experience with prebuilt other than our exclusive use of Dells for win platforms here at work). Ms claus actually brought me a BFG 6800 vid card for xmas - too sweet.

No particular reason really. It's just that my clients who use UNIX systems don't run Linux. They mostly run BSD. I'm a big fan of FreeBSD so that's what I use and promote. I really like the ports tree system and the way FBSD uses a /usr/local/etc (and other /usr/local/{dirs}) to separate the OS components from anything else installed. When I upgrade FBSD I can compile the entire OS from source, not just the kernel, with a single 'make world' command and it doesn't touch any of the application/server app libs or components- In my line of work that's a beautiful thing!

Wow! Our first comp was a Texas Instruments TI-994a (i think that was the #?) Anyone ever play on one of those? The games were on a cartridge that you slid into the keyboard, just like Alex mentioned. If you blew air into them and whacked them on the desk, sometimes they would actually work for more than 5 minutes! (or maybe that's what broke them? I don't know I was around 8 years old, lol.)

I'm not on a Mac at the moment, If we had cash outside of the rescue (I wonder if that will ever happen...lol) I'd love to get a nice hook up with one. I'd have a much better time with my music and photos etc....
My father in law Randy Gilman sports a real nice one. Did you know that the author of the "I spy" and "Can you see what I see" children's books does all of his graphic editing on a Mac.

Mac all the way!!! I use an iMac G5 with no built-in iSight, sadly.. we got it a week before they came out. We do have the iSight you buy seperately, but you don't get Photo Booth with that. It could log in a little faster, but I love it! Windows drives me crazy. I couldn't agree more with those commercials Apple has with the Mac guy and the PC guy. My iMac has never frozen. Not once. It has never contracted a virus or otherwise had anything seriously wrong with it. Whenever I walk into the computer lab at school, I think, "Pssh, Dells... Mac Minis would've only cost $600, and they're faster and have much better graphics!"

I'd never get anything else, except maybe the new 24-inch dual core iMac.

    Re: The few...the enlightened...the...
I've worked for public schools for almost 10 years now and macs have always been something of an odd ball in the districts I supported. I remember in grade school having the IIe's then grandma got a Tandy 1000 that ran DOS!

Anyway through my career thus far I remember setting up a few imacs (I think?), the blue ones when they first came out and I thought they where pretty cool myself. They where for an elementary school here in town. Skip ahead a couple years and the one corporate job I had used macs for graphic arts/design commercials and that sort of thing (Quality Farm and Fleet HQ). After that I was a Tech Director for a smaller school district for about 3yrs. Macs where never a part of the system then...not because I had any bias, there just wasn't money so there was little room for "diversity" in technology at the time. Currently I've been working for a larger ISD for the last 2+ years and macs are now coming back into view. I know of at least one whole district that uses primarily macs which as I said is pretty rare around here. I currently run technology for two specialized schools: a career tech center (for high school kids 11-12 grade what some might call a trade center) and also a special education school. The spec ed school had alot of apples at one time but by the time I got there the machines where all but functioning and of the very early generations so more than a little outdated. The tech center is a different story. I have 2 full labs of mac's for two different programs: commercial arts 17" imacs with all the good apps, and then also printing with dual processor G5's (I think). Also one co-worker who uses a 20" imac who does the school's PR type graphics and what not.

Our ISD admin office has started getting in some of the new macbook pro's, even my boss is using one now with the intel based internals and boot camp. He says he uses the two OS's about half and half, we run a mix of Novell, microsoft, Linux, Solaris (maybe not anymore), and even a mac OS server! The mac server has been around a couple years actually but is pretty beefy with a few Tbytes of storage as it runs educational streaming media to our districts.

So in my area of work I'm starting to see them come back and I say they definately have their place and functions and I don't see them the way Daniel described as I once did. I may even be requisitioning a macbook pro for myself in the near future as I take on support for more of them and will need the "tools" to do it as well keep up on how to use OS itself which is a bit dusty yet in my mind.

Wow that was a long post...just my personal timeline I guess of how I have seen them in places I have been. I am open to any OS that works period. I enjoy using Linux because its different and there advantages but it goes both ways and depends on how it fits into your scheme of things. I see the mac OS now running on non-proprietary hardware beginning to be more and more diverse in its applications and able to cater to that many more users. Maybe if I was a die hard or knowledgeable mac user before I would have already known these things :P

    Ok I'm done now.

We shopped around a lot and settled on a HP; I have no complaints. We wanted a built one from a friend of ours, but the cost was astronomical; this computer gives me no grief. But our sllllooooowwww satellite internet, that's another matter; darn living in the sticks.

I currently have a ibook g4. I switched over from a gateway m350. All the schools I went to always used Windows so I grew up with them. I eventually grew to hate it and it hated me. Always freezing and crashing, plus all the virus software taking up alot of Gb space. Hated it. I love my mac, it just fits me and how I work better.

Windows is better for games but since I am not a gamer my mac takes care of my internet, photo manipulation, and just general computer needs. It makes me happy and I tend to not be so stressed. Plus it has not crashed once.

The bad is that some programs; ie crappy AOL, have only older versions of their software avaliable, which in my opinion is not fair. But there are some programs that are mac only that are awesome.

I use a duel processor g5 for all my web and image and video editing. The rendering time and shade and vector rates for the mac are 1000X grater than that of a PC. Every SFX including ILM and THX use Mac based systems. Thats how Mac has survived over the years with the PC boom in the public sector. Mac has catored to the pros that demand stable fast workhorse computing power.
