I think that when you hear about a big lizard like a Green Iggy biting someone. It is usally the owners fault. Like me the only time I have ever been bit by mine is when I have had the scent of fruit on me! I also wanna hear peoples thoughts on big lizards
-
Talking about Big lizards!
Iggys - scary. cool. don't want one. maybe in a few years..
Ackies - (varanus acanthurus) - way cool. getting some when I have the money. not scary.
Blackthroat Monitor - Awesome. Tameable. Getting one when I have room
Water Monitor - Ultimate tamable lizard. Will have one some day.
-
I think the only lizard i would get would be a couple anoles or a leo (i know, they are gecko's)
I saw an adult Iggy and it freaked me the heck out.
Its so sad, last time i went to petco (looking for the corn snake manual) i saw this mom and her kids (daughter and son about 5-7 years old) You know, the kind of kids who get everything they want ? Getting two iggys......she was all like.....ohh they are so small and cute guys !! i was like....you know they can grow to be 6 long right ? and she laughed and walked away with her spoiled little kids and those poor two iggys.
-
Yeah.. there's a sickening amount of unwanted iggys in reptile rescues. (I'm sure Rusty knows what I'm saying here..)
We have an albino iggy at the zoo where I work. Cool looking animal.. all orange and white. He's a little... ornery though. Bit the female (also albino) and her toe fell off.
-
Aussie Water Dragons are cool!
Also I think the main reason Green Iggys become mean is that when they start to get bigger people never want to handle them. See with my iggy all I do is let him chill on my couch with me while I watch TV and I rub his head.
-
Ohhh, i forgot bearded dragons.......definitly want one of those, they just seem to high maitnance though, ill probaly get one when i move out.
Did you guys see the article about them in the new Reptiles magazine.....oo....they had some real nice ones, i really liked the snow dragons , very pretty :D
-
Beardies are neat. Definitely a lap lizard. Leucistic and sandfire dragons are cool. For some reason I think I wouldn't be able to handle a reptile that eats meat AND veggies. I'm afraid I wouldn't get the ratio right.
MisterPodo.. how big is your iggy, and how long have you had him?
-
I think he is about 4 1/2' Not quite sure I would measure but he is sleeping right now. I have had him since he was a baby.
Yeah, I was thinking about getting some beardies but its just too much maintenance for me.
-
Exactly, and im also not much for animals who require thier food to be housed and fed.
-
4 1/2' huh? Pretty big. So you've had good luck with him then? No meanness? Also.. where did you get him?

Hey, I thought you wanted to breed mice/rats. ;)
-
I wish that iguanas weren't so widely available & regarded as disposable pets.
Water monitors - awesome if you have the room to house them.
Croc monitors...intelligent. They figure things out.
Rhino iggies - hell of a bite, but the cutest living dinosaurs going. ;)

-
Yeah, I don't know if I am 100% on this but I think I heard that growing beardies can eat as much as 12-16 crickets a day and a pile of fruit with that. Then you have to feed them 2-3 times a week. TOO MUCH IN MY OPINION!
-
Croc monitors are definately cool looking.
-
I hear that it is 16-20 crickits a day, and that you feed them everday! Ahh! Anyway, yah, Iguanas are not something I'd want as a pet. You get bit by one of those things, and you are introduced to thousands of horrible bacterian. I have seen tons of wild ones in mexico. They are pretty cool, but ony from behind a fence.

Amen to that one. If you want a cute little green thing, get an anole.
Ooh.. crocodile monitors. World's longest lizard.. they have an awesome look about them. We have two at work. Very neat buggers. It's cool to watch them climb..
Also blue tree monitors are breathtaking. A true blue lizard. Can't beat that.
I saw the albino waters on the nerd website. Simply awesome. If that proves genetic (why wouldn't it?) I'm buying one.. in a few decades. ;)

Let me tell you...it all got redefined for me the night our big 9' male - Papa - had an abcessed tooth. He let Kev open his mouth, extract the tooth & irrigate the wound with just a mere tongue-flick. Talk about an animal that knows how to trust people if it's handled right...it was almost eerie to watch!

Aren't they gorgeous? And have you seen the yellow version? Not melinus but an actual YELLOW tree monitor - as sleek and sexy as the greens, blues & blacks. They're STUNNING!

We've already produced 14 hets...so maybe albinos next year if all goes well. Our homozygous albino group consists of 2.1...and we also have an albino blue-tail...she's so elegant. ;)
Big lizards just RULE!

Ivy plant works.. but the anole will bite you if you deserve it. Teach people a lesson. ;)

Wow.. well if you look in those eyes, you know something's going on up there. They watch you through the glass.. they wonder what we're up to I think.

I love ALL the tree monitors. I actually haven't seen a yellow tree monitor though. I googled them and didn't see any good pics. :?
Cool.. het albinos. The baby albinos will be awesome.
Do you guys use those galvanized water troughs for enclosures, or something custom? I read somewhere about using the troughs.. I think they'd be somewhat economical.
-
Ooh I just thought of something. An albino blue tree monitor. *drool*
-
That would be beautiful! Now all I have to do is sell my soul!
-
I currentily own 3 bearded dragons
They are intellegent and love attention. As far as food goes my oldest female ( 19 months ) eats an un-countable amount of superworms and crickets, she also lovves her BokChoi
My two smaller dragons ( 8 months ) male and female, both eat alot
I figure it costs me about 6-10 dollars a week ( some times less , never more) for food.
There is alot of maitnence but in my oppinion its all worth it

I have several lizards in my home...
we have a little iggy now, and he is pretty cool and actually able to be handled. Years ago we had one, as a baby, we had him for a long time, he grew to over 6 foot, tail included in that count, and he was mean as sin! The iggy we have now, is actually my brothers, so thats for him to deal with later. Hehehe.
I have 2 AFT geckos. And a leo- they really dont eat all that much.
We have a baby beardie, and he dont eat much~
And we have a Mali Uromastyx.. he eats like a pig. But really, I dont think all that much to be honest. But what is not much for me, may be alot for others.
We spend approx. $25 a week to feed all of our reptiles. For me- thats not much.

i have a few Qustions...
Are 260 gallon reptariums good for iguanas?(not full grown)
An how do they work(put together)
Should i get a leo to put in my twenty gallon long?
Or should i get a corn snake or a snake that can live in it for it's whole life?
Should i get two or three leos for the twenty gallon long?
Please reply...

Come in and Talk about iguanas!
260 should be fine for an iguana, Make sure its on its side however, so it is longer instead of higher
They get put together fairly easy. You have to connect the frame, then the mesh goes over it. Depending on the temperment of your iguana this may not be a good idea becuase im sure it wouldnt take much to rip the mesh. A wired wall cage would be the best plan. *make sure the bottom isn't wire *
Some of the reptariums come with a plastic bottom some dont. Make sure you get it for it will save you alot of time cleaning.
This is the cheaper route, the safest way is to go with a wire cage. A huge kitten cage or Dog crate will work great -- keep those in mind.
As for what to do with your 20 gal. That is entirely up to yourself
There are many options for what you can do, and its not up to us to TELL you what to get.
Having said that though leo's would be a good idea, or a crestie would be nice too, if you fliped your tank over. So do your research and make sure its not an "impusle buy"
Hopes that helps

why should it be on it's side?
iguanas need height..not level surfaces.they are abnormal.i have done TONS of research and i think i might go with a cali king snake.
reply with something we can chat about.(im inly 12)
-iguanaking
-
Yes. But at 6 feet iguana's need lots of space. 260 reptitariums are long and high, if you put it on its side there is still tons of room as far as height.
Are you the soul owner of this iguana at 12?
This isnt a cheap hobby......be careful you could very easily get in over your head. An iguana isnt a pet for most 12 year olds
I wouldnt recommend a Reptarium for a full grown iguana
-
ask me some questions...then you will see how much knowledge i have at the age of twelve.i know almost everything about the gaint green iguana
-iguanaking
-
oh yeah...i AM the soul onwer of my amazing iguana at the age of twelve. check out my pics.
-
oh yeah...also im not like most iguana owners
-
A note about reptariums.. I got the 22 gal one for my chameleon. It was VERY hard to get that plastic cover over it. Once it was on, it ripped! So whenever there was water on the bottom, it leaked out. Be careful with them. I'd recommend cutting a slight amount off of the PVC on the long ends so it's a little bit of a looser fit.
And... a note about cali kings. As babies they are NOT sweet little snakes like your average baby corn snake. They WILL adopt a cobra stance, rattle their tail at you, AND most likely strike to bite. If you pick them up... they most likely will fling poop all over your room.
Just so you know.

Probably because A) it's not that hard to google the information you're looking for, and B) this is a lizard thread, not a snake thread.

wow...you have a bad additude...im only 12!

Post pics here!
Hey, chill out bud. She doesn't have an attitude, she's just making a good point. If you have snake questions, make a snake thread. Being 12 isn't an excuse, just start another thread, and amaze everyone with your maturity. :)
Why don't you just start a snake thread? Then you can ask all the snake questions you want.

I'm sorry you feel that way. And no, being 12 isn't an excuse. You're at a point now where a lot of the things you choose to learn about reptiles can seriously help you in the long run, depending upon your willingness to research & find out good information that could help feed a passion for these animals.
I was simply pointing out that it's generally considered a good idea to do some thorough research on a species you plan to keep. Plan for the animal, not the enclosure. And simply coming onto a forum and expecting everyone to spoon-feed you information is not always "research."
Being an animal keeper requires a person to be able to think for themselves, to take initiative and discover information on their own. Fellowship with other animal keepers helps to weed out bad information and exchange ideas, but does negate the necessity for one to be able to gather information, weigh its merits & put it into practical use as a keeper.
And back to my original point (which you somehow took as a bad attitude), you are the one acting all impatient since no one has answered your questions about a particular animal. Instead of having a little fit in the forum, you could go and search out the information on your own in the mean time. http://www.google.com - there's a link to google.com - click on it, type in kenyan sand boa in the search bar & hit enter. You'd be amazed how much info is out there.
