Maternal Incubation Clutch pipped this week!
I can't wait to see what hatches!
Pairing was Pastel Calico male X Lemon Blast (Pinstripe Pastel) female
Incubation time: approximately 70 days at gradient of 81-90F
Female ate 7 small rats during maternal incubation

Thanks everyone! I'm hoping by sharing my experiences/photos this can educate and help others who also want to try maternal incubation!
Re: Maternal Incubation Clutch pipped this week!
Two babies out so far! Looks like a Pastel Calico and regular Pastel? What do you guys think?

What did you use for substrate?
Re: Maternal Incubation Clutch pipped this week!
Congrats and they all look like amazing hatchlings. The temp gradient that was in place, was that a sustained gradient or just at intermittent times throughout? Also, what type of enclosure did you keep the female in post ovulation and immediately post egg laying? Thanks.

This.
She looks like "I am a fierce dragon and these are my offspring. Do not test me!!!"
Re: Maternal Incubation Clutch pipped this week!

Yes I know! I was so surprised, NONE of the offspring have pinstripe. Yes, that's a Super Pastel Calico! Mom was a first timer, so there's no chance of retained sperm and she was only bred to the Pastel Calico.

The substrate or bedding used was fine pine shavings.

The temperature gradient varied throughout incubation mainly due to the ambient temperature of the room (ranging from 75-85F). The female was housed, bred, laid, and maternally incubated her clutch in the same large plastic tub (same size as cb-70). I would not recommend moving the female after she lays her eggs if you want to do maternal incubation.

No, I raised her from a baby so she's well adjusted to human interactions. I was able to pick up her babies without her trying to bite or lunge at me. Hormones can play a role, so I've had very tame females become quite defensive after egg laying.

Thanks! Interesting enough, mom and all the babies shed together. Perhaps in the wild, this might help mask their scents from predators? Just speculation! They all still hang out within her coils. I just fed her last night and will be separating the babies today.
