It's a F2.8. The reason the focus might be a bit weird is that it is unfortunatly a 40mm zoom, all I could afford. Another is that I was using manual focus and I wear glasses, so it looks good until I put it on the screen.

    Beautiful snake!

To get more depth of field, you need to add more light and open the F stop up probably to more like 5.6 or 8 to get the whole snake in focus. You can also add ISO and get take a longer exposure to make up for the lack of light, but there are always limits to that.

If you open it to a longer exposure? Does that mean that you would have to have a tripod to stable the camera?

I know how to use a camera properly by the way (tone of voice is friendly here, not snappish or condescending). I wanna say I have spent 12 years using Nikon DSLRS, from the D80 to my current D5500.

The lighting is the way it is because of 2 things. I was in my room at night and the lights I do have in my room are crap, and she came right up to the lense and out of the flash range. Also the range is 40mm, which means I have to get super close to my subject to get a great shot, which also ruins lighting as well.

Focus is wonky because of me using manual focus on a very fast moving curious snake without a tripod. Again my glasses as well also do not help when looking down the view finder.

I need to check what my f stop was on these pictures, but it had to have been less than f/22. I could try again during the day with proper lighting and use a f/32, but focus and depth of field is such a tricky thing with macro, especially when there is so much working against you

I would love to get a lense that is above 55mm, but those lense cost over $500 and I am a poor college kid who needs to buy a laptop soon and cannot afford such a lense.

Also leaving the aperture open longer really only works with a lot of lighting, with how dark it was all images would be blurry.

The limits on the longer exposure is movement. Most lenses with image stabilization can be shot down to about 1/60th handheld. The other problem is the snake can move as well. I'd say raising the ISO, depending on how your camera can handle it, is the best way to increase exposure so you can back off on the F stop a bit.

To the OP, the depth of field is incredibly small in these shots, which makes me think you were at a pretty wide open F stop (low number). Not sure what lens you were using, but those photos are akin to using my Nikon 50mm at F1.4 which gives an inch or so depth of field.

The answer is really just getting better light. A white sheet and a desk lamp can do a pretty decent job. I think there's a how-to for making a budget light box as well somewhere on here (which is how most of the breeders take such nice photos).

I also am a Nikon guy, but haven't tried doing any nice snake shots yet. I think the light box is the best way to do it and plan on trying it myself.

I'm a big photography nerd myself, and I have spent a lot of professional time on both sides of the camera, but all I can say is that is an absolutely beautiful snake!

The head is done, the body should be quick and then I'll clean it up and shade it.http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/16/01...dbdae7e244.jpg

Most of the body is done, just have one more coil to fill in. Then clean it up and start shading.

Life got in the way and my drawing arm is now in a brace, so it might be a while before I get the chance to touch the drawing again.

If you ever do draw them I would love to see. Hopefully I'll be out of the brace in a week's time.

Beautiful snake!! I especially like the photo you use for your drawing. I would have totally chosen that one too. And the damn freaking scales... Everytime I try to draw or paint a snake I just end up throwing everything and cursing! It's so frustrating. And it's like there's no way around it like when you paint leaves or grass... You just HAVE TO paint every single scale. :rolleye2:

And I hear you about glasses and manual focus... LOL how many "perfect" photos did I ruin because I was too bothered to put my contacts on!

I don't have contacts so I am doubly screwed there, but yeah it looks amazing untill you put it on the computer screen.

The picture I chose to draw everyone really likes it so I decided why not draw it and try painting it when I have the chance to paint again. Taking that picture was also hard, the lighting was low so I had to really drop my f stop to capture as much natural light, so most pictures were super blurry from her constantly moving and investigating the camera.

Upgraded her home from a tub to this. When she gets bigger she will be moved up to a 55gal.
