    Say Hi To Monty!
Well the name was obvious really, I come from the UK and we are the home of Monty Python and the Flying Circus, so Monty was just right. I cant be accused of rushing into this :) I have spent a good amount of time taking advice from all of you vastly more experienced keepers, I have read books, watched videos and spent hours researching snakes. My thoughts were I was going to buy from a dealer but one particular Petco changed my thoughts. I have 6 Petco's in my local area, but this one in particular just seemed to care. I had my eye on this snake for a while now, I had handled it, seen it feeding and its temperament was just awesome. I went to the store today not knowing if he/she would still be there, but (we are going to assume a he) was. There was also 25% - I got 6 frozen mice and the total cost was $123. After 1 hour exploring, Monty is curled up in his middle hide at the moment. I'm not going to touch him for a few days so he can settle in!

THANK YOU ALL FOR HELPING ME!!!!

Just an iphone pic so far!!

Congratulations, I'm so glad you prepared and read up before adopting your little friend. I think a pinstripe is a fantastic choice for a first BP. Good luck with the little buddy :)

He came out last night. Things were not as left them :) He is back in his middle hide again this morning curled up. This period for me is obviously a massive learning curve, trying to understand what is normal behavior and what is not.

Good morning all, so no change to Monty's status overnight. He pokes his head out of the middle hide every now and again but does not move much so far. There were no signs of him moving overnight. I have purposely left the thermometers in areas that he will knock them over.

So my question is. Is this normal? Remember, I have only had him since Saturday and he was fed in the store that morning.

Should I expect him to start moving around a bit more? If so what's the norm?

Every snake is different. As a new owner you will have to just learn your animal’s habits and over time you will be able to identify what is healthy behavior. Example: "ball pythons are nocturnal so if you see them out and about during the day something is wrong." As a new snake owner someone might read this...see their snake out during the day and jump to crazy conclusions that something is seriously wrong with their pet when in actuality the snake is fine and just happens to be out moving from the cool to warm side. It will take time for you to learn and seeking out information is a great tool…just be careful not to get stressed over nothing.

Your snake has a new home so he explored the first night. Now that he’s got some of that out of his system he took the night off to relax and feel safe in a new home, perfectly normal. Continue to observe as you are doing, keep the husbandry on point and you will be a great snake owner.

Really great thing you did by adopting the animal also!!

Well he is having a good old roam around tonight. I turned the LED off when I got home from work and 2 hours later, just with the ambient light in the basement he was out and about. Currently sitting right at the front of the tank sniffing (i guess) at the air coming in where the glass doors overlap. He is a very handsome chap. I have not got him out to handle him yet. I wanted to leave it a week.

My plan is to feed him this coming Saturday? That will be 6 days after his last feed. Then I will leave him for a couple of days then try and handle him. Sound like a plan? Let me now if I am going to fast/slow!

When I went down this morning to turn the light on he was sitting with his head out of the hide and he had been out overnight. I changed the left hand log hide to a more enclosed home.

Thank you all for the encouragement!

Should I try and feed his highness tonight? the only reason I ask is that he has been hunting around for the past 2 days.
