Python curtus breitensteini
I bet there's a lot of discussion about the mentioned specie, but I don't want to go through all the threads so decided to make a new one.
I've been thinking of getting a Borneo short-tail in 3-5 years and I ask all of you Borneo owners to tell your own personal experiences.
* For example about their personalities, every snake is an individual so interested to know what your Borneo is like and how he/she behaves around you and such, assuming that they're not an aggressive specie. :)
* For his entire life, are rats big enough food item for a Borneo? The biggest rats I could order weight 300-400g.
* Adult terrarium size?
* Negative and positive things, if you can be bothered to list.
* What is a Borneo's average weight and length?
And if something else comes to mind, please do tell! :)
I'm also interested in knowing what size your Borneo is and the age at that time. Pictures of your Borneo would be epic to see!

My borneos are just babies, got them this year but for short tails in general rats are fine for life, some people do rabbits but most just stick to med-large rats. Cage size you are looking at at least a four foot enclosure and possibly larger, most get 5-8 feet but get heavy, 15-30+ pounds. They are often jumpy and nippy as babies but usually settle down as they get older, good feeders and good lap snakes, very inactive, very huffy and noisy.
Here's one of my 2015 borneos

Okay, that's good news haha. Rabbits are a bit hard to come by and they're expensive, so good that the rats are enough. :)
I might give the Borneo a bird (chicken) every year as a b-day treat, would that be okay? I've heard that at least some pythons love the taste of birds and might get addicted to them, which makes them not eat anything else. In my opinion though they will eat anything when they're hungry enough.
So 4 foot in length, what about width and height?
Aw, that's good to know, quite what I assumed. :)
So awesome looking! Is it a morph of some kind? I would want the whole black one, is the morph Ivory?

Oh! It was an Ebony, my bad.

I've seen people feeding chicken and quail before, it's fine, I've offered quail to a couple of my snakes and they haven't shown any interest. I hear it makes for a messy end result but short tails go so infrequently anyways. My cages are 4' x 2' x 11.5", some people go for a taller cage, little harder to heat but easier to get in and out of. They don't move around much but like to trash the cage when they do.
Morph wise, I don't know exactly what mine are considered, the parents were blonde superstripe x ultra. I don't breed so don't really care but I don't think she's exactly a normal. This is my male and I think he has granite sides.

I haven't seen any black borneos, but p. curtus are usually black/brown. I have a chrome head male p. curtus, they tend to be lighter, not as jet black as the ones with black heads. He's really dark in this pic but often is more silver.

Oh, okay good. Woah, that's tall. :D Does it have to be that tall? Would 5'' be enough?
It sure doesn't look like it would be a normal. :)
He's so awesome looking! Takes my breath away and that's the one I meant, saw another one just like that here:

Then you want a Sumatran short tail, not a Borneo. The good new is they're smaller and in my experience more mellow, especially as babies. I think sst is a very good choice. An adult can be kept in a 4x2x1 enclosure.

Ohh! Sumatrans, blood pythons and Borneos look so similar, so I get a bit confused. Or is a Sumatran classed as a blood python? :confusd:
Well that sounds more like a reasonable enclosure. :)
-
300-400 gram rats would be fine for either Borneo or Sumatran. my Sumatrans also enjoy chicken, quail and rabbit.

once upon a time they were all classified as subspecies of python curtus. they have since been reclassified as 3 distinct species. Sumatrans are frequently referred to as black bloods as a holdover from those days, but are more correctly referred to as sumatran short tails.

Oh, now I'm more wiser. Thanks for the clarification! :gj:

Yes, as mentioned they are 3 species:
Python curtus (Sumatran Short Tail python, aka 'black blood python)
Python breitensteini (Borneo python, Borneo Short Tail python)
Python brongersmai (Blood python, aka red blood python, aka Sumatran blood python - though they are found on more locations than just Sumatra and this may not be accurate to the individual)

well, I'll share my early experiences with my first borneo. I got her as a hatchling about 1 year after I started keeping snakes, turns out that may have not been the best choice for the inexperienced snake keeper. I didn't have enough experience with snakes to properly read their signals. The snake was a greedy feeder (borneos are like that) and grew quickly. she was an "aggressive" snake IMO at that time. sometimes in our hobby biters are referred to as "unpredictable". LOL, there was nothing unpredictable about her, you touch her, you get bit. My lack of experience led to the conclusion that since she was a biter I should grab her behind the head when handling to avoid this. This turned out to be a great idea, if I wanted to get bit some more! As my collection grew and I began to understand snakes better, I realized she wasn't aggressive, I was to blame for every bite. I finally understood her point of view after about 2-3 years. Rule #1 - "Don't touch me anywhere near my head, bottom 2/3 of me only please". Rule #2 - " I'll huff and puff and hiss at you every time you open my cage unless you're feeding me". But I realized this was mostly bluff. I realized as long as she wasn't wagging her tail along with all that noise, she was harmless. And if she was wagging her tail, leave her alone unless cage maintenance is required. Once she had properly trained me, I never got bit again. She lived 19 years and she was a pleasure to have, I'm glad I figured it out before I had to give up on her.

Thank you I understand what your saying my only bite so far was my fault and I know that for sure. My Borneo short tail has been bullying me you open the tank and he's in an S and has that look Im goona bite you and he had some good vocals to. I'm going to stick to my guns and he and I are going to work this out. The other day I used a piece of cardboard while I was cleaning his tank its a 40 breeder tank so I have lots of room to work with. He has really grown in one year, he always eats 2 weaned F T rats each week. Now my Red Blood male is totally different he's a sweetheart and he does not attack the food I have to play with him the darn rat will be touching his nose and if I move it he wants it back on his nose it takes me at least ten minutes of play with the rat time before he gently take the Rat and I know all this can change lol He also skipped his meal last week I have no Idea why..... They certainly are different and much more powerful than my Ball Pythons[emoji106]

Thanks guys for your input, it helps alot!
Such a big girl, woah and I'm loving those pictures! :D
The last picture is so sweet, almost like he's giving you a kiss. Hehe.
I've been talking to a person living in Finland and lucky me she lives near me and she will hopefully have Sumatran Short tail babies for sale in 2017, also she's been very helpful with my questions and supportive so I won't hesitate to get one off her. :)
