Dog sports people?
Who's involved in dog sports here? Whether it's rally, K9 nose work, dock diving, flyball, agility, IPO, French Ring, or even real life work-work like Search and Rescue or K9 Detection? Please share! (It might be rare on a snake forum, but thought I'd try anyway :x )
My interests are currently mainly in, but not limited to, dock diving, flyball, and nose work. I only train K9 Nose Work with my Aussies right now. Mainly focused on Lancer... he has great work ethic, where my other one will often give up in 2 minutes, sit in front of me, and complain and sass loudly about why I'm not looking for it myself. LOL
We're aiming for Lancer's NW1, which I know will be a breeze for him. He's very solid with containers, interiors, and exteriors. It's difficult to practice vehicles with him at home, because once he sees a car, he thinks we're going to the park to play fetch and all thoughts of nose work are gone.
This is my fluffy goob, thinks he's a model. <__<

Re: Dog sports people?
Gorgeous Aussie! :) Sadly my Border Collie doesn't do much other than lay around haha. No doggie work gets done around here.

Woah, a border collie who lies around? Preposterous. :D hahah. How old is he?

Beautiful dogs!
I take a daily hike with my three (maybe three miles). We just don't have the population base for canine sports. Also, around here, the mentality is pretty miserable when it comes to dog care. Sports would be out of the question. I work on some basic obedience with mine. They don't have to be precise about the execution, but with three (and one is a hyper domineering little Chia) life would be WAY too chaotic without it.
I used to frequent a Mastiff forum. Many members there did sports, others did specialized hunting. Some good reading. The Dogo Argentino is good at boar hunting. Who knew? I had never given the Dogo a second thought, but in their element, they are majestic canines.

I know, right? He's almost 5yrs young. Not a puppy but not exactly a senior I'd expect him to have a bit more energy. I picked him up from someone local pretty recently. He was overweight (55#) and lazier than he is now. People around here don't exactly care for their pets very well. He was fed exclusively on Cesar wet dog food and chicken broth. After walks, diet change and strict dieting he has gone down to a great weight but only a bit more active. Still lays around all day if I let him.

That makes sense- in many rural areas, canine sports are a rarity- or people need to drive an hour or hours to get to the nearest club.
And that's interesting, I know next to nothing about the Mastiff-specific sports and nothing about hunting. They seem like a pretty rare breed to begin with, but I know some dogos do decently in IPO.
I'm also on dog forums. :D I used to be active on a bunch, but now I just frequent one with a few members.

That's great that he lost weight with you though- Cesar wet dog food and chicken broth for a diet sounds terrible. 55 lbs is hefty for a BC.
I'd pay to see a lazy border collie LOL. Do you have photos of him? :0

I've wanted to get Odin into some kind of sports ever since I got him, but it always seems to fall to the bottom of my to-do list. He's now a 2 year old sheltie/border collie, so I don't know if he's too old to start learning a new sport? I know there are some agility clubs around me, since I've seen their equipment set up around the animal shelter where the local dog park is, but I'm not sure of any other sports. Odin's pretty fast and too smart for his own good so I'm sure he'd be good at a sport if he picked it up, I just need to make time to get him into a class.

I don't have a picture, but my Schnauzer Sandi used to do agility before I moved. She really enjoyed it.
And no, your dog is never too old to start learning a sport. My dogs agility class had plenty of old dogs that were just trying to stay moving.

2 years is still very young, and it's never too old to start agility. :D Dog sports are all about having fun as a first priority to begin with, even for those who are into competing (at least, that should be their mentality). Agility is exercise, bonding time, and dog and handler learning to read each other. He sounds like he'd be great at it too.

He honestly looks like a black bi Australian Shepherd to me, mainly due to the wavy fur texture and shape of the muzzle/head, and the flat ears? Maybe even a BC/Aussie mix? I guess it's not uncommon for some BCs to be mixed with Aussies somewhere along the line for a few of the BC/Aussie looking dogs.

Yep. We're agility folks - pretty clearly, I guess. Love the game - LOVE. Also LOVE the dog like crazy.
Also my BC turned 2 in May and while she's had lots of classes, she won't start competing until she's at least 3. IF you want to play, get out there and do it! Two is CRAZY young, and barely more than a puppy!

I do IPO with my shepherd.
Also beginning to train him in bed bug detection. Though now that I have had my second escapee ball python I'm considering training him in snake hunting as well lol

That's cool! Did you guys get titles yet, or just starting out?
Heyyy, I think bed bug detection sounds like a lot of fun. My instructor in nose work trains bed bug detection dogs. The fact that some of these dogs can detect a single bed bug on the ceiling of a room is just amazing.

Just starting out with this boy. Will be going for our BH in september. My SO'S dog has a Schz II so it's not our first rodeo.
Yes. A friend of the family owns a extermination service. It's something he has wanted to add for a while but the investment is pretty steep. So we'll get my pup trained up and do some uhh consulting work ^_^ he loves nose work so I'm looking forward to it.
Though he has an aptitude for the ball python hunting too. He found my escapee this morning. Lol

For 15 years i showed and bred bloodhounds, they are known for their nose work, thats why when i had a litter half was promised out to police and sherrifs departments. I even had one boy who went to alaska for cadava dog training. One of my boys made his first assistarrest in minnasota at only 9 mo. old. I am not their trainer, just their proud mommy, and breeder. The ones that did not serve in search and rescue or tracking did me very proud in the show ring. Now i am retired and most of my guys are retired, but You can be sure i will always be proud of my babies accomplishments. Your Aussies are beautiful, and like all of the hearding breeds are relentless workers and love to please. You have the perfect breed to do any of the things you listed, they also can be great at french ring, because of their intellegence and protective abilility, which is in the breed already. good luck.

Awesome, good luck with him! :D A couple who both are into dogs and dog sports sounds like the best life LOL.
I wish I had IPO clubs local to me that are more suitable (I went to a couple trials and the training and helpers were not my style). Not for my Australian Shepherd, but my next dog will definitely be a dutchie from Asheley McCleary.
Omg... Good dog!
