Can someone help me identify this spot on my BP?
Hey everyone! Just made an account after lurking for a while. I have an 8 month old female piebald and I recently noticed a small black spot growing near her back end. I've also noticed a black speckle on her jaw, near her mouth. Can someone help me identify this spot?

I haven't really found any black speckles in her water dish, but I have found some black marks on her paper towel. However, even the fresh paper towel has these spots, and they don't appear to have legs.

The way I test to see if they are mites is by, putting my nail in the middle of the black speck. If there is blood, it is a mite!

Otherwise, I'm not sure what else it could be?

If you suspect mites then get some reptile spray and apply to the paper and snake. Do not spray on the head just spray the snake and let it run through your hands to apply it on its body. Make sure you remove the water dish for a day or so when you do this so they don't crawl through it and then drink it. Try that and see what happens.

Do you mean just pushing on the black dot and seeing if any blood comes out or around the scale?

I'm definitely going to buy a mite killer, however I'm not sure which one to buy! I heard provent-a-mite is good, but it can harm snakes. What would you recommend?

Quick update, I managed to scrape a bit under the scale, and I scraped out a tiny black piece of the speck, i didn't see any blood, but there is definitely something under her scale. Any thoughts?

Try getting the black spec, put it on a white paper towel, put your nail straight through the middle, any blood?

If you're unsure, it is probably best to just treat for mites, I am not sure of the best items to use other in the US. I know people mention PAM.. not the cooking oil.

I saw no blood when i took it out, maybe it's just dirt? I'll keep an eye on her water dish.

If your paper towels have colored areas it could be where his scale has caught some of it, or possibly dirt or fast has worked it's way into the scale, without blood coming from the dot it may not be a mite, but just in case use a mite spray and lather it in by letting him run around your hands, remove the water bowl for a while as to not contaminate it and clean out his entire enclosure. I wish you and your snakes well.

I am surprised no one mentionned the obvious, Pieds develop black spots over the years some big some small.

If there was a mite infestation you would see them everywhere on a pied.

They develop black spots as in colouration on their scales? Because I was able to scrape some black stuff out from underneath the scale shown in the picture.. No blood though.

They do develop small spot that can be as small as black tiping on the scale, now if you scrape something from underneath it could be debri. Can't tell without examining the animal in person.

Pieds get black spots like Bananas over time. If it's not a mite then its just one of those phantom black spots they get.

Simple and quickest way to see is a jewlers loup its the magnifiying glass jewlers use look at them through that you be able to see another way is to draw a circle around the dots on the paper as mites move and one on a snake can simply be muck under a scale if there mites your snake will soon be coverd in them..... callingtons and olive oil are good ways to remove mites as is tarus preditor mites

When I was looking at my CG the other day it looked like he had more black spots than when I first got him, but I thought I was just crazy lol. Nice to know that I'm not (well at least not for that reason).
