My leo hasnt eaten yet, temps are 85-87 warm side,75 cool side.humidity is 25-30,what should I do?The breeder said the adult females might go off feed at this time,is this true?
-
Need more info.........
what has her diet consisted of?
Sometimes they get lazy and dont want to chase crickets. Try mealworms instead. Or sometimes they dont want worms and want to chase crickets. Vice versa, vice versa.
is she about to shed?
Sometimes before you can tell they are going to shed, they don't want to eat. No big deal, wait till they shed.
Make sure she's got a place to hide on the warm side and the cool side, geckos can be stressy animals and stop eating if they feel vulnerable.
Thats about all I got.........

She is 3 y/o and has been on mealies all her life.
How do I know wehn shes gonna shed?

Her colors lighten up dramatically. I also just saw your post about how you just got her. I bet you anything she's just being skittish about her new environment. Give her some time to accilmate and I'm sure she'll come around for you.
-
Ok,Should i try tommorow or wait a week to feed her
-
You just got her, it usually takes some time for them to start eating after you get them. It's prefectly normal for your gecko not to eat its first couple of days with you.

New Golden Child retic pics...(dialup warning!)
I'm releived,I just put a little bowl of repti-vite.Can I have one in there all the time?
-
Yup, they'll only take in as much as they need.
-
It's also good to have a humid hide in there for them. Mine take advantage of theirs ALOT. My little patternless boy loves it in there, but then again, he's always shedding :) Fat little thing. I just bought a 3-pak of the disposable tupperware containers, left the lid on one, cut a hole in the side, and put wet paper towels in there. Place it on the warm side and you are good to go. You'll know when they shed, they turn a translucent-gray color and get a little irritable. I guess you would call it PSS, Pre Shed Syndrome... Hope that helped. Good luck with her.
Oh yeah, Might want to try some waxworms too, those are awesome at getting anything to eat.

I have a humid hide, might try waxworms, after I am sure she wont eat.

Nothing is wrong with feeding waxworms. I give them to my geckos pretty much every other day. It's not like they can get too fat. She will most likely eat at night, so just get a bowl, a small one(like one for rodents), put some dusted mealies in there, and she should eat. The best thing to do is to not watch them. Leave her completely alone, except for changing water, putting mealies in dish. I always hear mine rustling in the leaves and in their bowl at night... when I am trying to sleep... :)
-
I know how many a day I should give her,but would 5 be too little for her to get her started? Also, would I need to dust the mealies if I have a little calcium dish? Can she get to the food if she cant see it?
-
She will most likely hear the mealies moving around in the bowl, but make sure the bowl is in a corner or up against a wall of the cage so she doesn't continuously circle around it. 5 is a good number. I usually put 10-12 mealies in the bowl for 2 geckos and they are fatter than sin :) I don't have a calcium dish because I have read from other breeder's sites that it is just a pain in the booty... They just crawl through it and make a mess... I use Rep-Cal and Herptivite and put calcium in the mealie bowl 3-4x/week and herptivite in 1-2x/week depending on if the crickets/mealies/waxies have eaten lately or not(new, just shipped crickets, or crickets I've had awhile).
Mine seem to be doing great, running around acting like goobers, shedding a good amount, eating, eating and more eating, and there's some sleeping in there too. :)
Also, your question about dusting... Yes you should dust them even if you have a calcium dish. Rep-Cal has D3 in it while Herptivite doesn't. You should dust with something that has D3 in it so they can metabolize the calcium they are taking in. So you should, in essence, have 3 things to give them if you have a calcium dish... Regular calcium(pain in the butt if you ask me, but that's my 2 cents), calcium with d3 and herp vitamins. I like Rep-Cal and Herptivite because they are made to go with each other, and serve my purposes very well... But it's just up to you what you use.
It's ok if she doesn't eat for a little while, if her tail is nice and fat and squishy, then she is healthy and can live off of that until she gets settled in. Just be sure to leave the mealies in there so she can eat the at night. Good luck with her. :)

I use reptivite and it says it has Calcium,Vitamins and Vitamin D3,would this work?
-
Nope... They need to all be separate. Too many vitamins can be as detrimental as not enough, just as calcium can. I know, Leopard geckos can be a little difficult to get situated at first, but once you get the hang of their needs, it's alot easier.
The stuff that you're using isn't good to leave in the bowl because it has d3 and vitamins. If you really "have" to have the bowl, then just go get some plain calcium WITHOUT D3. That is what you can leave in the bowl at all times. I just feel that a bowl isn't necessary if they are getting supplemented with calcium with d3 3-4 times per week. If I were you, I would take a trip back to the petstore and get some calcium with D3 that contains no vitamins, and a container of herp vitamins. Herptivite is awesome, and even though it costs around $8-$10 for 3.2 oz., you're only going to dust stuff with it 1-2 times a week, so it will last forever. You can find Rep-Cal and Herptivite online for alot cheaper, but I know how parents can be about buying things online :)
I'm not going to list all of the vitamins Herptivite contains but it has 44 of them. I don't think anything else on the market has that much of a range... Also, your calcium shouldn't contain phosphorus, if it does, get something different. Too much phosphorus is bad, and it comes in the vitamins anyway.
I know it can be a pain getting all of this right, but it's all for the better. Did the breeder say what she used?
-
Ok,I told my mom,she wants to know how much the plain calcium and vitamins will be put together.
Anyways,my mom gets paid on the 15,can I wait till then?
-
Oops, the thing I have is only vitamins.Wednesday Ill get some Calcium.
-
RepCal at the petstore is usually around $5-$6, and Herptivite is around $10-$11 at the petstore. Those would be your best bet as they are formulated to be used together. You don't really need a bowl of plain calcium if you are dusting the crickets and mealies correctly. RepCal has D3 in it and the Herptivite has a little calcium in it as well, so no worries there. Especially if you feed your crix and mealies well before feeding them to your gecko.
My mealies get whole wheat bread, oatmeal, and some crushed dog food, and my crix get the same, except they get fruits and veggies too.
Those two supplements are the only things that are really needed. If you sprinkle RepCal in the bowl that the mealies are in, shake them around a bit, then she should get all the calcium she needs. Even after the mealies are gone, the calcium will still be in the bowl, so she can go lick on it whenever she needs to. Then when vitamins are needed, just sprinkle some in the bowl that the calcium is in, shake the mealies around a bit like before, and there ya go. :) Hope that helped a bit.
-
Can I use repti-vite and Calcium w/o D3?The Vitamins have D3 already.
-
Yeah, that sounds ok. You would just need to give the vitamins more often so your gecko can metabolize the calcium efficiently without having an overload of it. If you don't understand, just let me know. :)
So has she eaten for you yet?? I just got my guys some giant mealies ad they went after 'em like savages, LoL.
-
Na,she didnt eat last night, maybe in the dish i should put newspaper so she can hear them better?
I'd give her Vitamins 3 or 4 times a week and Calcium, the other days.
-
Nah, newspaper would probably just be a pain. I'm sure she can hear them, they have pretty good hearing and smell. The calcium should actually be given more often than the vitamins. So calcium 3-4 days a week, or just keep it in there in a bowl/jar lid/something, and give vitamins, at the most, 2 times a week. Maybe try putting a mealie in her hidey place or putting one next to the bowl so she knows where they come from.
Is her tail still squishy and fat? :) If so, she's fine. They can go for a little while on the fat in their tail.
-
If I use Calcium w/o D3 4 days a week and Vit w/ D3 two days a week,what about the last day?
Her tail is fat and squishy.
-
Well, let's see:
Calcium- Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday There's 4 days out of the week.
Vitamins- Tuesday, Thursday, or you could do Monday, Friday, so she would be getting the vitamins as well as the calcium.
Just be sure to mix it up so she isn't getting calcium 4 days in a row or vitamins 2 days in a row. Ya know what I mean?
Does that help some? It helps me to write it all out like this. You should be good to go, and it seems like she's a fat and happy gecko.
-
Shes gonna shed! She was super light today and I wonder when she'll be done?
-
It doesn't take long, maybe a day or so. Just make sure that humid hide is nice and damp so she gets all of the skin off of her little toesies :) Let us know how it goes.
-
Its to bad geckos dont shed in one peice and they eat it......
A whole shed from a gecko would look really cool.
-
Merry Early Christmas..
I made sure her humid hide is damp.I can't wait!
