What a lil brat!
Louie just hissed at me for the first time when I lifted up his hide to give him dinner lol brat!!! I'm like "no silly baby its just me!! Come and get it hot and fresh!!" He must think he's a big tough guy eating rats with fur now! I know I just probably surprised him. Anyone else get an off chance hisser like that before?

My bumble bee female hisses at me every time I pick her up. She's never struck, but she's always hissed. It's so cute.

I have a Woma female who hisses at me almost every time I pick her up. One hiss and she's done, it's all a bluff, she handles well. Now, when my spider girl hisses, that is another story, we don't pick her up.

So interesting! It's good you've never been struck. Louie's never struck anybody before either. It didn't really scare me so much as when he makes that S shape pose when he's about to strike lol that's when I really wanna stay out of the way I know he means business. Hissing was just silly tho putting on a bluff!!

My butter spinner hissed at me once, randomly, but she was in shed. She's a sweetheart otherwise. My carpet huffs and puffs at me all the time, but she's all talk, lol.

I help out at the pet store I got Nagini from and I'm responsible for getting new snakes to a point where they don't react very much to human contact. The one we have right now that I'm working with huffs at me no matter what I do. He's never struck at me, just huffed at me so whenever he does, I just say to him "Don't give me that"...
Even though he doesnt understand me :D

Re: What a lil brat!
Never had my ball hiss at me - she is so laid back! My boa hisses mainly when she is going into shed - "leave me alone, I don't want to be bothered". I picked her up a couple of days ago and she let out a little hiss but I didn't think it was time for her to shed yet. When I got her out and had a better look at her I could see that her eyes were a bit hazy. She is so light in colour that it is sometimes difficult to tell when she is getting ready to shed but afterward she is absolutely gorgeous!

That's how my little Spotnose got her name after I had her for about a month. She would hiss at me a couple times so I named her Sassy...

My youngest daughter's female spider hisses anytime her cage door opens but has never shown any sign of agression other than that. My daughter is convinced it is the snakes way of saying hi.

My ball pythons have never hissed at me, but you should see the show my hognose put on! It's hilarious.

Re: What a lil brat!
Our pastel hisses on occasion when we get him out of his enclosure. He used to do it a lot more, but decided he's ok enough with us to reserve it only for those times he's really annoyed. We tell him it doesn't scare us and even "encourage" him to do it more because it's so cute! Big bluffer...

My butter will not only hiss at me, she will prop her head up and get in a striking position while hissing. Then coil up and hide her head when I call her bluff.

Haha I love this. My ball pythons aren't very hissy at all but man my little hoggy Armin is a little hissing machine. It always makes me jump because it just comes out of nowhere lol. Then I pick him up and he's like I'm cool, I'm cool. [emoji4]

Re: What a lil brat!
It's so cool to hear everyone's stories!! I guess a lot of snakes put in a show!! Seems like especially these hognises out there!! I'm glad to hear in so many cases its just to make a bluff or put on a show and no one really get struck at it or bit. I feel like I having nothing to worry about just sneks being sneks! I love em!

Of course, I have a couple that will sometimes hiss. No biggie, they are snakes, and snakes sometimes hiss :snake:

I know ball python's are shy, but i'm pretty sure my albino is a wimp even by their standards. She hissed at me once when i was being rude and trying to get her out of a hide she didn't want to exit but even then she just and balled up tight.

My Hog is the same way. If she is irritated with me (usually only when shedding) she'll let out some big-winded hisses but it is all hiss, no action. And when she is out all is fine and she is great.

Re: What a lil brat!
My Pewter female doesn't hiss but she does like to kind of huff or spit air if you will. She has had me super worried that she had a respiratory infection when I first got her but she has never breathed raspy had any mucus in the mouth or missed a meal she just likes to blow air at me once or twice when I open her rack.

Oh yes, once I pick my hoggies up the show is 100% over. I've got a video of it. You can see the second he's in my hand he calms right down. The sound quality is a little low so you have to put up the sound to hear him well. ;)
By the way my hognose is named Sir Huffington the First. Heehee.

Well, I really try to be extra cognizant when I lift a hide off of any of my reptiles bc that is a perfect time to get bit. I have never been bit by any of them but I always use more caution when going into a hide or lifting a hide off the snake. I always look at it as going into a room without knocking, you get what you get. So hissing is a warning that the snake doesn't like what just went down and is telling you to watch out. I would start taking him seriously and start reading his warnings and signals. I really don't look at it as him being a brat. I think he doesn't like being disturbed in his private room. You gotta knock next time Haha. At least be extra careful and do it slowly. :O

My super black pastel only hisses when I lift his hide off of him and then rub his side so he knows I am there. He lets out one hiss and thats it he never strikes or goes in the "S" position. He is one of the tamest snakes I've ever had. If he sees me before I go in the enclosure he's absolutely fine. I think lifting that hide and going from total darkness to being exposed and woken up startles them no matter how laid back the snake is.
