Distilled water or regular bottled water?
I currently use bottled water for them does it matter?

Anything you would consider drinkable would be fine. What most would call clean water doesn't exist in the wild and they made it this far. Mine just get tap water

If I can drink from the tap so can the snake!

No offense but I'd never give tap water to any of my animals, not my cat not my snakes unless our water was purified which its not. I'll stick with bottled water. Thanks for the input!

There is also no water in the wild with added chlorine, arsenic and lead! Where do you think bottled water comes from?

Distiller water would be a no-no...... All of the minerals would be stripped from the water

You seem to already have your mind made up.

I have heard that distilled water may leech minerals from the body. I have not done the research, and it can be difficult to find truth online. So I don't know.

I'm just saying the majority of snake owners, especially those with large collections, aren't buying mass quantities of bottled water, or distilling their own water, and their snakes are doing just fine.

I didn't want to start a debate, I just wanted to know if someone preferred distilled over bottled I guess not. Tap water is not an option so I'll stick with clean pure bottled. Thanks

I have well water. Wouldn't give distilled nor bottled water to my pets. The amount of things like arsenic and lead are so teeny as to be unimportant. There's more naturally occurring "contaminates" in the air in a common home than would be in a serving of water.

And bottled water goes through a process similar to most tap water. It isn't someone dipping that bottle into a pure free flowing spring. It's pumped into a factory that runs it through filters and into holding tanks and finally into bottles. All those pipes and hoses and equipment? Same sort that is in most municipal water facilities.

I'm not saying you're WRONG to use bottled water. I'm saying you probably don't NEED to. But if you feel better giving bottled water, go for it. I used to drink from a hose, and even drank right out of the river, puddles and pools. I barely twitch and my head only falls off on rare occasions... lol.

I can't see that distilled water would be "bad", but I don't think it would be "good" either.

Chlorine evaporates quickly, most would say it is a non issue and in a water bowl it is even more of a non issue, arsenic is higher in concentration in many natural waters than our drinking water, and if you have detectable lead in your water you have issues that need to be fixed.

This. A lot of or even most bottled water comes from a city municipal water system. It usually is tap water but may just be better than X city's tap water.

I'm with wolfy-hound on the well water :8:. Ours tastes even better when a nearby city releases a 'boil water' advisory which of course came too late for their residents.

Our bottled water Is actually bottled at the source from an underground natural aquifer. So this is not the case for all bottled water!

I wasn't trying to brag saying I use bottle water I just wasn't sure what people thought was best. I can't afford to buy bottled water just for them so the bottled water I give them is usually from bottles people don't finish and waste. Didn't mean any offense to any of my fellow BP keepers just was curious if anyone had any reason that distilled was better which I realize know is not the wise choice. We have a big family so sometimes someone opens a water and forgets about it for a few days and that's when I claim them for my bps lol.

I agree, I toss out the water in the bowl and put in fresh every day or two. The tap water in my building isn't great so I use a Brita filter for both me and the snake.

Sometimes when I've had him out and am returning him to the enclosure he'll put his head down and take a drink while I'm holding him. It's a nice feeling of trust that he's comfortable enough to do that.

The only time my pets get bottled or special water are

    A.) They're fish, like bettas.

    Or

B.) They're amphibians like fire belly toads and the tap water may harm them.

My snakes are fine drinking the same tap water I drink.

I like to feel the water first before I give it to them. If it's not wet, then I certainly don't want to give them THAT water....

I keep a bunch of empty sweet tea bottles around (I like those Arizona tea bottles, heavy duty plastic with a nice easy to grip handle) and fill them up with tap water that I use to top off water bowls in between cleanings. (I clean the water bowls at the same time I clean the tubs, about every two weeks or so, unless of course they get crapped in which is not an uncommon occurrence, then I replace them) However, sometimes I also use those bottles to mix up a dilute batch of chlorhexidine solution for cleaning. I know I've gotten those bottles mixed up in the past because I do remember a time of going around filling water bottles and wondering why the water in their bowls was a light blue color. The snakes still did just fine and went on to live a long and happy life. Heck, I've seen snakes drink from a pool of urine that was freshly squeezed out of the rat that they just ate. In fact I suspect that since they come from a dry grasslands type of area, it's probably pretty natural.

If giving your snakes bottled water makes you feel better, then by all means go ahead and do it. It's just really not necessary.

I use tap water for everything. There are a lot of negatives, but there are also nutrients that are not present in distilled. For fish of course I use start right and pro clear because fish are pretty sensitive to high levels of chlorine. I used to waste my time filtering water and what not, but then thought to myself "What would they be drinking in the wild?". Could be worse.

In my opinion if you don't have overly contaminated, hard water I would just use tap.

Every once in a while a newb troll comes along with their one snake that knows everything. Remember a couple years ago the threads from one particular poster about keeping snakes in "tupperware"? They all go away eventually

actually are water is hard and our water report shows alot of chemicals. we are thinking of getting a filtration system for the whole house. see what happens when everyone is so quick to judge. if are water just had alittle bit of chlorine id use it but our water report shows more chemicals beyond chlorine. I guess ill be know as THAT guy now but i really dont care! you guys would do the same if you were in my shoes.

Doesn't matter that you use bottled water, doesn't make you any better either.

precautions meaning that my towns public water may not be safe after reading the water report. never have i made that im better than any of you nor do i beleive that im better. you yourself said you use purified tap water which we do not have but am planning on adding a purifying system to my house so i dont have to use bottled water forever but for now thats all i have to work with. I wasnt sure why everyone was jumping down my throat it sure seemed that alot of people had a problem with it. Again i DONT beleive im any better than any of you just want the best for my animals and in MY case (cause of hard/contaminated water) is bottled water. also didnt mean it to be directed to just you.

I've been trying really hard to stay out of this, but I have to give my :twocents: worth after this. Not until the 4th page of this thread did you mention that your source of water may not be safe. If this is in fact the case, then there's not a single one of us here who would continue to provide that water to our animals and of course would find an alternative source until the problem was resolved. If you would have started with that on the 1st page, instead of this...

...then this thread would have taken an entirely different direction. You said that you would never give tap water to any of your animals - you did not say that you would never give unsafe tap water to any of your animals. Those are two very different things.

I personally use SPRING bottled water. Not distilled/purified/etc. And I put my pinky out when I pour it into their water dishes.

HA, just kidding. For me, I use bottled spring water because regular tap water calcifies the water bowls, which drives me nuts and is hard to clean.

Vinegar will take it right out. I usually soak my bowls every couple months to remove the calcium buildup. ;)
