Which to get? Corn Snake vs. King Snake
ok, i love my BP's but i also want a more active snake. so i think i want a colubrid of some kind. they seem to be popular snakes.

there are a few options on CL that are up for rehoming that i'm interested in. specifically Corn snakes and King Snakes/Milk Snake ranging from juveniles to adults.

so what do u have or recommend? i'm look to the forum for feedback on these snakes. what's their temperament? do they thrive in a tub? good eaters? etc. etc.

let me know what u think. thank u all in advance! :)

I've never had a corn, but I love my kings. The speckled is a bit of reclusive jerk (we love him anyway) but the cali is super interactive and inquisitive. Compared to the ball pythons they are a breeze to care for.

    thanks!

what's their heating situation? do they need an UTH and thermostat too?

I have never had a king but my first snake was a corn so I am going to be partial to corns. I have heard great things about kings but my view is corn snakes have the perfect mix. Are pretty active, they are garbage disposals, super laid back and are easy to care for. Just my opinion but I don't think you could go wrong with either.

yes, having a snake to eat the mice rejected by my BP's would be nice.

I still have my first snake ever 16 years old now and he is a corn....ive also had a few kings...they are more flighty and active than a bp by far....younger snakes can be a little feisty but I find it amusing. One thing I found that I not the biggest fan of was getting musked by them. Care is very easy compared to balls..both overall are very cool snakes and usually not picky eaters....

I don't run anything in the summer since my house stays in good ambient range for them. In winter I usually provide a heat lamp to raise the ambient temps to proper levels.
Neither care for UTH's but if you were to run one a tstat is nessesary.
The kings are super garbage disposals too. :) Neither of mine have ever missed a meal.

also Kings and Milksnakes have to be housed in another room from my other snakes, correct? i read that the sight and smell of other snakes (prey) will make them nuts.

I seen no ill effects when I had my kings in the same rack.

I've never kept corns but I do have a 3 y/o Cal King and a 2 y/o MBK and I love them both to pieces. They were a bit fiesty as hatchlings but they got over it quickly. They're both really sweet now and neither of them ever musks, strikes or rattles their tails. They both hit their prey really hard at feeding time but the Cal King will take sporadic food breaks. I give my kings a hot spot of 86-88 year around. I think they can be kept easily in tubs, tanks, wood or pvc enclosures. I'm not sure if you're open to other colubrids but if you are take a look at the Pituophis species of pine, bull, and gopher snakes. My bulls are awesome. They get a bit larger than kings and they're also a bit more active than my kings.

My personal preference is corns over kings. But kings are very awesome and beautiful imo! The one thing you really need to watch out for when working with colubrids is that they are escape artists! I've seen corns climb up glass, as well.

I was at my buddy's house, and i had a ball python out. After i put it away, my buddy took out his kingsnake. It started biting at everything, probably because of the bp smell. But with kings, wash your hands after holding other snakes!

I've got both corns and kings. I've bred both and I like them each in their own way. But for a pet snake, I'd take a corn over a king. They're just a bit easier to handle I'd say that I could handle well over 95% of the corn snakes I've had without fear of getting bit, but only about 60-70% of the kingsnakes.

I started with Colubrids. They are more active than BP's, and there are so many neat species. If you want super active, the Asian rats and beauty snakes are hard to beat, but they can be jerks. Kings and Milks are active and very pretty, but can be finicky with feeding much like some balls (seasonally). Corns are active, pretty and sweet. Check out African House Snakes-- they are also really cool.

Can any one tell me where the Pitts might fit into this spectrum?
I really like the look of the gophers and bulls, but I've read mixed opinions.

    Thank you!

Kept pretty much the same they just get larger and need larger enclosures. Typically calm down without much extra effort but when they're in a bad mood you get a fun display of sights and sounds.

John is spot on. Bulls are a breeze to keep. My male can be a little grumpy sometimes but they're pretty easy to handle. Their defensive behavior is fun to watch but its all huff and bluff. :)

I've experienced similar with my Kings . It's really when they're put in / on something quite recently - that's housed another snake as it can trigger crazy responses. .
If they're in their own separate viv stacks or whatever - it's no problem .. I've got three viv stacks next to each other - housing 4 Kings and 4 Rat snakes , 1 hybrid Milk / King snake and one Royal - and there are no issues at all .
