My only clutch this year - baby pieds and something kind of sad
So . . . This was actually a bit of a test-breeding. Cloe is a Possible Het Albino, and, this last season I put her back to one of her Pied sons. Ended up with 7 nice-sized eggs -- average weight, 115 grams -- one of which was infertile. The infertile egg was quite strongly adhered to three others.
Pipping started Aug 1st, and the first five babies out are in good shape. Number . . . well . . . not so much. The egg rapidly lost moisture toward the end of incubation. I really don't like to cut unless something doesn't feel right, and it didn't. I cut on him on Day 63, four days after the first baby pipped. The inside of the egg was tacky, with dry (yes, dry!) blood vessels still adhered to the inside of the shell. Added incubator-temperature water, the little guy came out two days later. He has a bit of the premie headshape and his lower jaw is just short enough that it doesn't quite fit with the upper. But he acts normally and flicks his tongue. His sibs are already going into shed. So . . . We'll see. I'll know in a few weeks, when he does or doesn't eat.

Congrats Alicia on the clutch! Sorry about #6 though. That was good instincts you had to go in and cut to save the little guy! I don't think I would've gone in like that. Good call. You taught a lot of us how cutting in special circumstances can be lifesaving. Hoping for a positive outlook and result going forward. Thank you.:gj:

Congrats! They are all beautiful.

That is a beautiful mix of little pied worms! Good instincts on the 6th egg, I'm sorry the 7th went bad - I hope your tiny baby shapes up okay.
-
Thank you, everyone!! Number 6 is starting to go into blue -- keeping my fingers crossed!

Thanks again, everyone!
The babies have now all shed out -- including #6! The little guy shed out late Sunday. His head shape is still a little wonky, especially from the side, but he's acting very alert, moving to see what I was doing cleaning his tub and flicking his tongue like a normal baby. Still crossing my fingers. Later this week, I'll see if he'll take a hopper. And I'll also see if I can't take some pics the next time I have to clean tiny cages :)

Small update:
Two of the babies ate the first offering, #2 and #3. Because I always make the effort to start babies f/t before live, this is pretty typical. Everyone who didn't eat last week will be offered thawed three more times, then I'll give them live mice. So, these might be slow updates, but I'll keep posting them :)
Thanks again for all the well wishes for #6! So far, he's still hanging in there and acting just like his normal siblings. There's hope, just waiting for him to eat!!
-
let's go babies! eat! eat! eat! :D
-
Okeedoke, small update. The only baby who has not eaten is #6 -- tonight, however, he did kill a small mouse. He just hasn't eaten it. So, maybe it'll be gone tomorrow morning, maybe it won't. But at least the intent is there!

Small steps Alicia, that's great. Amazing clutch! I have to take a page out of your book about the f/t too. Thanks. :gj:

Left it :( That he killed it, though, gives me a ton of hope. I'm betting I just looked in on them too soon for his liking (I check at 15 min feeding live) and threw him off his game.

Yeah that can be a big problem with shy babies. For the first live meal or two I try to find very small hoppers or even large fuzzies that are too small to hurt the snake, and then don't peek for an hour or so.

Thanks! A large fuzzy would have been perfect. If I can't turn one up in a few days, I'll go ahead and just give the little guy a bit more time with another small. My local pet store is a great, consistent, source of mice, but breeding my own was definitely better.

Update . . . #6 has eaten! So, all of the snake points now belong to Ax01 lol
Yep. Followed bcr229's advice and left him alone with a small hopper for an hour. It totally did the trick. And thanks to everyone for their support and good mojo on this thread. You're all totally awesome. :salute:

Just curious, but do you have a picture of the 6th baby's head from the side? Just wondering what he looks like, lol. Im glad he ate, it's great that you saved him :D
