    First Rack: Pics and Questions
So, Ben Siegel's has become The Jungle and they were offering a small snake rack for $50. Here's the pic
    http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08...90d5e91e49.jpg
It holds 15qt and 32qt tubs. It needs TLC, but I think it's going to be perfect for me. It doesn't come with heat, so I was hoping for advice on that. Also, what size snakes can go in the aforementioned tub sizes?

For me a 15qt will hold a bp up to around 800grams. A 32qt will hold until around 2000g, though technically except for the largest females a 32 qt will do for adults. Personally it comes down to the snake. Some will prefer the smaller size tubs while others are just as comfortable in larger ones. My guys tend to eat better when they are snug vs in bigger tubs.

Edit* you can order heat tape to your specific instructions from several places online. Try something like reptile basics.

If that is a closed rack, then you would need to buy enough for the width of each level, so that each spot has heat.

    Id recommend 4" tape.

Also if its closed, then you make need to drill small holes on one end of each level, so that you can run the wiring put the back.

Thanks! I shouldn't have to worry about escapes?

Awesome. My girls are almost 800g and so a 32 should do nicely for quite a while. Do I need a hide in there?

Depends on the snake. I have a couple that are fine without a hide, most would rather have a hide

I'm a little worried, now. This was apparently a rat rack which was not specified during sale. I was told by a friend it may not be suitable for snakes. How can I ensure escape prevention?

No way that is a rat rack. They need much more ventilation than that.

Idk lol my girl is an escape artist. I'm guessing this might be more suitable for juvenile and sub adult...no babies :(

I've never had a baby get out of a rack. An appropriately constructed rack has about a 1/8 inch gap for each tub. No baby bp is getting through that.

Okay so definitely no problem with security. I checked it out. It smells so bad though. The tubs haven't been cleaned at all! Thinking I need to deep clean and sanitize these but I have no idea where go start! Definitely going to give the rack itself a nice wipe down and stain it ^^ debating black or mahogany.
The strength of the odor ALMOST makes me wonder...maybe they WERE rat racks. Whatever the case, it's pungent.

Not to burst your bubble, but if I were you I would take that thing back and tell Mr Siegel you want your money back. You can make a rack that size new, with tubs and heat for nearly what you paid new. Maybe he charged more for the stench? looks like the boards are severely sagging also.

If that's made out of melamine you won't be able to stain it.

Siegel has a questionable reputation and I see why.

Siegel actually handed his business to The Jungle and they were selling this to clear space. The picture makes it look nicer than it does plus it was never mentioned what state the tubs were in and I should've asked. It was an impulse purchase and unfortunately non-refundable :/ I didn't realize that I had someone willing to make me one until AFTER I bought this.

Gotcha, well I'm sorry about that. If the rat smell has permeated the plastic tubs you might just want to replace them.

If you want to read a crazy and horrifically tragic story involving Siegel, Google his name with 'cockroach.'

Okay, so the boards actually aren't in that bad of shape and I think I can fix this thing up! I definitely need to paint and we are going to deep clean the tubs and go from there.

Re: First Rack: Pics and Questions
Oh my God this is so gross. I started soaking the tubs and began to check the boards for sagging. No sagging, but what I saw disgusts me. Here is what I sent them:
"I just wanted to let you know that, while I expected this to be a project piece, I did not expect this rack to be so dirty. Dust isn't a problem for me, however, the inside of the tubs smelled awful and looked not to be cleaned at all. Some don't have ventilation holes (not a big issue, just letting you know). The tubs are 28qt not 32qt, as I was told. Not a huge difference but it still would've been nice to know. My biggest issue is what I found on the inside of the top shelf. I am not sure what this is, but it definitely put me off a bit. I'm pretty sure it's mold. I'm not looking to be a complainer, I just wanted to let you know. I want to be a continuing customer, so I just wanted to give you feedback so maybe you could use it to improve."
    Here is what I found
    http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/08...9001edacbd.jpg
It's freaking me out. They sent me a brief apology, but still have yet to fully address the issue. Frankly, I'm a little miffed that they didn't think to check and or clean it. I am not sure I want to even keep it anymore. I guess we will have to see how this plays out.

Throw that thing in the trash. I'm sorry your first rack turned out to be a bad experience. Once mold starts in wood it is very hard to get rid of, especially when keeping a humid climate for reptiles. Don't be afraid to post a bad guy thread for The Jungle. God knows what bacteria and other pathogens from ill kept rats could be on there.

I cant see how someone could let it get that bad.......I do a full rack clean every month and disinfect all the tops. That is just awful husbandry practices..I would never buy a snake from someone who let there racks look like that

:/ $50 down the drain? I wish they'd offer a refund or credit or SOMETHING. I had the household handyman look at it. It's made of PVC(?). He said it's mildew and if I work really hard to get rid of it, I can paint it and it should stay away.

If it is pvc you will be fine. can you disassemble it for a good deep bleach....I would disinfect it like 3 times to be safe.

Stage 1 is complete! All of the tubs soaked in bleach water for an hour, scrubbed, and set out to dry. Now they will be sprayed heavily with disinfectant and set to dry again, then sprayed once more and wiped down thoroughly. Meanwhile, we have broke out mildew spray and are going to spray down the rack, treat it, and go from there.

Lots of bleach water, elbow grease, and a great hose did wonders! Phase 1 is complete. All of the tubs are clean and the rack looks close to pretty freaking new...once it's dry, we can move it. We hope to paint it. Then gotta figure out how to heat it.
