Holding a snake around your neck

I'm curious as to whether or not you think it's safe to hold a large snake around your neck. At my job I hold rather large burms like that all the time, and haven't had a problem, but I just wondered. I've read opinions on both sides.

If not, what's the best way to hold a large snake?

My next snake is going to be a bigger species, so I'm doing my research. :)

I think it's fine as long as you try not to let it coil around your neck. But if you know what you're doing, and have it just slung around your neck, it should be fine. But of course, if it's a big snake that could easily overpower you, make sure you have someone around in case you need help. So yeah, IMO, as long as you don't let it make a complete circle around your neck and coil, you should be okay.

Yeah, I don't let them go around my neck. Burms are mainly limp noodles. I usually have to loop their tail in my belt loop so they don't fall down (I could step on some of those longer ones!)

I accidently stepped on one's tail once. The big lug didn't even notice. I felt bad though. :?

although i dont think the chances of you getting hurt are very big, i would say putting a large constricting snake around your neck isnt a very wise move. but if you do just remember to be cautious.

i use to do that with my big burm and some of my larger ball pythons. The burm would just hang there over my shoulders while the balls would actually curl around my neck.

I was at a reptile show and I held a 12ft. 100lb burm, it went around my neck, and im not even 5 foot! It was scary as crap, i got a picture, gosh its sclaes were so big. The bigest snake ive ever held was a 6 ft. snake, until that.

We normally don't just for the reason of not wanting to strain our necks and shoulders, I don't ever want two hundred and fifty pounds around my neck area if I can help it..lol

I think its ok as long as you dont let it coil around your neck (like everybody else has already said) Then you might have some problems.

I think the best way to hold a big big snake is to have a couple people hold it.That way its not around anybodys neck and there isnt any danger of it wrapping itself around your neck.

Even with smaller snakes......Just the other day i was holding rebel and she wrapped around my arm close to my joint (where my elbow is) and hung on really tight, i was loosing the feeling in my arm and it started to turn a differnt color. It wasnt blue or anything drastic but still i know that if she had done that around my neck that it wouldent have been to comfortable at all.Youd be surprised how strong they really are.

Rebel is only 3 feet.

:shock: OMG, I hear you there. I've had to hold an 80lb burm for 6 hours at a time on more than one occasion. Ouch.

Bob rides around on my neck and shoulders course he's only 4 foot long and a big chicken too :D

ive only had rex, my 2.5ft BP on my neck and adrian, my 3.5ft BCI on my neck. rex would squeeze a little, but not to hard. i walk around doing things such as chores with adrian around my neck all the time.

Seriously though, It's nice to have a buddy to do the boring stuff with.

My only one big enough to go around my neck is Shelby, and she tends to constrict a bit on my neck. Silly thing thinks I'm going to drop her.

But since I handle snakes that aren't my own on my neck at work, I don't put mine there unless I've just washed my hair, I don't want to risk spreading anything.
