    Cage cleaning while in shed?
Is cleaning a snake cage acceptable during shed? my viv is getting a little smelly. Last clean maybe 2.5 weeks ago. Of course I spot clean.

If it's getting yucky, I don't see why not. I've done it. Just keep actual handling to a minimum-snakes can be a little more snippy during a shed cycle, so watch out. :)

I clean my snakes of they're in shed if they need it. I just don't sit there and play with them, a smelly cage needs to be clean. Just my .02

You can clean just watch your snake's body movement as they do tend to be slightly more cranky during shed.

Minor handling and stuff during a shed usually won't bother them at all. You don't want to mess with them for an extended period or anything, but handling for maintenance is fine. The only time I actively avoid handling mine is the day after they eat.

I'll clean the cage whenever it needs it, regardless of whether or not the snake has just fed or is in a shed cycle.

I'd suggest waiting until they shed and then doing a thorough clean. Mine like to take a giant dump after they shed so that's usually when I do my cleaning. I hate fully cleaning a terrarium just to find a little present a few days later.

I clean whenever is necessary. I don't handle them too much while they are in shed but I don't change my routine when it comes to cleaning.

That's true. Whenever my snakes have a sausage butt and I want to handle them I clean their tub. Usually by the next day they will have pooped and I can handle them without worrying about being crapped on.

You know your snake. If not, this is how you learn. Just keep an eye on it while you are in there.

Just be be sure to wash up first, even up to mid forearm if you have pets.

I always gently stroke my girls in the mid section, and make sure I am petting behind them, away from their heads. I talk softly, I know they can't understand, but if they always feel the same subtle vibrations and stroke when I enter the cage or pick them up, they know that they are safe.

This has always worked for my 5 ft BP, 6 ft Boa, and 7 ft Carpet, which these sizes can be intimidating.
