Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
I can assume that ball pythons are out of the picture. Haaaaha. -___-
In your experience, which pet species has the best feeding response in terms of literally eating any prey thrown at them? In other words, rat and mouse garbage disposal?

In my experience, my Red Tail Boa and Coastal Carpet Python will not and have not ever turned down a meal. Nor any extra that was refused by the BP.
I haven't tried quail or rabbits yet on my Boa as others have with theirs. As far as my Carpet, the previous owner gave her chicken wings and drumsticks sometimes.
Rodents will NOT go to waste in my house, for I have Dual Garbage Disposals. :D

I agree with the boa. My boa eats anything, anytime, though we try not to over feed him. Anything smaller our corn snake readily takes it with out a second thought.
We do have BPs that do readily take left overs though. Some are stronger eaters then others. Out of 14 bps that I have only one has feeding issues.

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
I have heard that boas will eat anything but I have no experience with them. A snake I do have experience with is my corn he has maybe missed 3 meals in his life time and he is about 3 or 4. When ever my baby bps don't eat their mice I give them to him.

Interesting, is there a specific type of boa or BCI that has a better or worse rep for feeding response? Or just... all boas. All of the boas.
I've already been considering a corn- even more motivation- slightly more motivation now LOL.

If you're just looking for a garbage disposal for 1-2 snakes then you have lots of options. There are plenty of snakes out there that will quite literally eat themselves to death if you let them; Pituophis have to be near the top of the list in this regard. If you find yourself needing to dispose of a larger number of rodents then you'll want multiple snakes acting as second, or one larger species, so as not to end up with a morbidly obese animal.
I like using my bull snakes for clean up because they are on the larger side for colubrids. A big male can easily handle a couple medium rats and you will barely see a lump. I'll also offer second servings to the carpet pythons but pay special attention to their build and make sure they maintain healthy muscle tone. When I'm looking to retire breeder rats, the papuan python lends a helping hand. Just take care with any animal you nominate as garbage disposal, frequent overfeeding can drastically shorten their lifespan.

I second the blood pythons for garbage disposals. I have a few adult bloods that will be more than happy to eat any leftovers that are refused from the balls that are off of food right now. If one of the females that I am trying to get to gain weight don't want a second, then the bloods get them. Their feeding response is so strong. that they will eat almost anything. Becoming overweight can be an issue with the bloods, so be careful not to feed them too much.

My SD retics are first, with the other retics right behind them.
The boas are also good except I have two, one of which is my biggest female :rage: that are now refusing rabbits but will slam a jumbo rat.
-
Any colubrid like a corn, milk or king, for the smaller prey, and my boas for bigger stuff. Or like right now, my larger monitors will always dispose of extra stuff for me.

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
I agree with John. My bull snakes will eat anything/anytime.

My Brazilian rainbow boa is an INSANE feeder. Whenever I put the rat pinky in front of her, she starts striking like crazy and always misses a few times before getting it…which I find incredibly amusing.

While boas will usually eat anytime food is offered, I wouldn't recommend one as a garbage disposal. An occaisional extra is fine, but boas have slower metabolisms as it is, and there are a lot of health problems that crop up with continued overfeeding (whether it is meals too frequently, or too large/too many prey items).
I would recommend colubrids, they typically have much faster metabolisms, but I would recommend more than one garbage disposal if you have refusals quite that frequently.
My go to option is always to offer a refusal to my female ball pythons first, then resort to my "garbage disposals".

Burms for sure. Those goofs would eat a license plate if it smelled like rat.

This little psycho, my green anaconda will literally eat anything and anytime food is presented to her. Most insane feeding response out of any of my snakes. Even my retics aren't as crazy as she is.

My boa never refuses a meal. I would say a large BCI can be a good garbage disposal snake. Juveniles can easily be overfed, and - to answer one of your questions - other subspecies quickly go downhill if you accidentally overfeed them once.
Oddly enough, I have an adult pastel male BP with a ferocious feeding response that has taken refused meals from my other ones on several occasions. He seems to be the exception though, but never a dull moment with him on feeding day - he chases prey items out of his enclosure, after all.

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
I picked up a Red Tail Boa just for this reason lol. I was tired of wasting the frozen rats my BP's wouldn't eat.
She'll eat Rats, Mice, Live or Frozen Thawed !! Never refuses a meal :gj:

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
My experience comes while both BP and boa where in shed. On several occasions while glossed over my BP would not eat frozen thawed or fresh killed. For my Boa it does not matter he can be into the shed process or glossed over blind he will eat anything you put near him without fail.
-
Oddly enough, my main "garbage disposal" is actually a ball python. I have a huge variety of feeding responses from my BP's, but my Pastel Calico is a beast.
I second corn snakes as well. I'm pretty sure mine would take 4-5 rodents in a sitting if I offered them. :O (I don't, of course!)

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
My boas, definitely. Will eat anything, anytime, anywhere, no questions asked.

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
Currently, my False Water Cobra. Mice, rats, and probably anything else. She ate 13 silversides the other day. I do try not to over feed but they have a pretty fast metabolism as well. When I used to work in a pet store the cal kings would eat anything, anytime.

Re: Which species has the best feeding response/garbage disposal snake? LOL
I once had a western hoggy female that was my disposal. For large items i found my red tegu collection would take anything including retired breeder rats. Can't say the hunting technique of those are very elegant compared to the way a snake feeds.
Now, i thought i would be the only one to say this, but others have already said, one of my balls, i never plan to feed him. he only gets fed if someone refuses but he is a sure thing.

What Paul said; I have bp that get fed last only because they will take the refused meal of any other.
