False Water Cobras?

Exactly how venomous are these snakes? I'm considering getting one; however, it seems like the internet is pretty divided on this.

Any other tips/information would be awesome too! :D

If I were looking for such specific info, I would contact Najakeeper, in the Venomous section. He has quite an extensive collection of Hots. I believe that he has some False Water Cobras. Or maybe they are Water Cobras if there is such a thing.

I believe he even did a video on feeding those snakes some fish if I recollect. Not sure if it was YouTube or just for the forum.

Water Cobras. Way different. FWC is a rear fanged colubrid.

Ha! I just found the venomous section-I missed it the first time I looked, and I figured colubrid was a fair second choice. Thanks for the direction though!

Lol the false water cobra is harmless to humans unless your allergic then it maybe be a little swelling headache and what not nothing bad at all I've been looking into getting one of these snakes

They are a colubrid, so I believe this is the right spot. I have seen a few claims about people having bad reactions, but every first hand account I have read has been nothing more than moderate swelling lasting up to a week. In my experience they are not prone to biting in self defense, but have a heck of a feeding response, so use caution if that is not something you are used to. Their care is pretty easy and they are a hardy snake. Mine seeks out cooler temperatures, mid 70s or so unless she has just eaten. I use a humid hide and she will go in there while shedding. She soaks often but not excessively. Overall one of the coolest snakes I have kept, super active and watches what's going on in the room. Also fun to feed and always ready to eat anything. Thanks for the info-I'm glad to hear from someone with the snake itself. I have a Brazilian rainbow boa, so I'm very used to an aggressive feeding response. Sounds like this snake isn't much to worry about-just wanted to gather more information before making the commitment, haha.

She is a little bigger now and seems to be getting more contrast. This is my partner holding her, and they are not super familiar with snake handling, but honestly Deedee is a pretty trustworthy snake.

falsies are like no other snake i've ever handled! personally i'm more comfortable handling a monocled cobra than a false water cobra lol. those things are full of piss and vinegar. its the only snake i've ever seen fully crawl backwards. yes backwards. not just withdrawing part of their body back but actually crawl backwards. I do not keep them but have a couple friends that breed them and they are a very awesome snake in their own rights. as far as venom they are very mild unless you happen to be allergic or allow it to chew on you for a period of time. i'd say no worse than a hognose snake in that department honestly. just keep in mind that they have an extremely high prey drive and move non stop.

i've never seen any boa with a feed response anywhere close to a fwc. the closest feed response I could possibly compare it to would be that of a retic. or if you have actual cobras then youve seen a strong feed response.

Hopefully this works. This is her eatin a rat pinkie a few months ago. It shows how fast she is interested but not necessarily how frantic she can get if she thinks there's more food. Also she immediately drinks water which is pretty cute. You definitely don't want to linger with your hand in the cage. Confidence is important with handling these guys. You can hook train but they're pretty squirmy. The other crazy thing is how fast they grow. I feel like she puts on an inch or so each time I feed.

This has been similar to my experience with falsies. Very unique and absolutely amazing colubrid. I acquired one several months ago and he is quickly becoming my favorite species to work with.

I've seen some videos of FWC eating on YouTube. The response very much reminds me of my Yellow Tail cribo, crazy back and forth shaking of the rodent with the whole upper half of her body, which reminds me of a largemouth bass jumping out of the water and trying to get rid of the hook.

My retics are much, much calmer. The closest comparison is my Egyptian cobra, but her furious strike is just to grab the rodent and then she jerks it back into her Petsmart cave without the crazy side-to-side shaking of the head.

I may get a pair of FWC if I find the room down the line.
