    Record Keeping
Just something I've been curious about, how do you guys keep track of the feeding and sheds and everything? I have a notebook I write it all down in, but for those with a bigger collection of snakes, I'd imagine a different system is more efficient! :)

I use iherp.com and love it so far. I use it to track both my ball python and my leopard gecko. It is a simple interface and even has a built in chat board of sorts that you can ask questions on and meet other keepers. It is very nice having a concise means of scanning past information. I can see at a glance when the last tank cleaning was, when the last shed was and how long the cycle took. I log the weight of the prey items he takes each week and also his weight once he finishes digesting. The primary reason I feel it is important to keep records (other than peace of mind of course) is that if you happen to have to go to a vet they are going to want a health history and you will want it to be as accurate as possible. Paper logs work, but they are more time consuming and could be more difficult to scan through for relevant information when needed. :)

I use Google sheets too. Easy to set up and use, accessible from any device.

Iherp user here. Well at least when I get around to updating it, it not always convienent to have the laptop in the snake room, so usually everything gets written down on a notepad then updated later. Have any of you who are using reptile scan also used iherp, and if so how do they compare? As in things like ease of use and such.

I also use iHerp, and also continue to use the notebook as well. Feel free to track my kids' progress. Same username as here.

I made a chart on my computer and printed it off and keep it tacked to my fridge. I have the a few columns. One for the date, one for his weight before feeding, one for the weight of his food, one for what type of food and the last column for notes. In the notes column I usually write if he was shedding/what his behavior was like. Kinda old school, since I just read that a lot of people use apps. But I like writing it all down.

I was using iherp but what sold me on reptiscan was the qr codes. If iherp added this feature, it would be boss.

I use Reptile Scan for my collection, the QR codes comes in very handy.

I only use this for my collection and only records things that are important to me, feeding, pairings, ovy, pre-lay and clutches.

For the animals that I sell I keep their records on index cards.

I've been using iherp.com and it's been great to me so far. I like that it's free but i wish they would have an app. Like someone else already said, the only drawback is needing to do it on you computer.

Large collection here! As of today, we have 12.29 ball pythons, 2.6 BCI, 0.1 BCA, 0.1 Suriname BCC, 1.1 Anthill/Pygmy Pythons, 1.1 Cape York Spotted Pythons, 2.2 Children's Pythons, 1.2 carpet pythons, 2.3 corn snakes, 2.2 Honduran Milk Snakes, 0.1 Sonoran gopher snake (and 1.2 bull snakes coming home soon).

I've tried Reptile Scan, iherp, notecards, etc and what I have found works best for me is to have it all on paper. I have a list of when the last feeding was, the date they are next due to eat. Every day I look at the list and see who needs to eat today. I find it easiest to break up feeding into a little bit almost every day rather than a feeding marathon all at once, not to mention I have some snakes on 5 day feeding schedules and some on 14 day, so it gets hard to keep track otherwise.

After snakes get fed, and I log whoever shed that day, I put it all on an "official LOG THESE" document. I do this for an entire month. At the end of the month, I print the "official log these" document. All of the official records for our snakes (including invoice from breeder, genetics guarantee, business cards, etc) are kept in binders. We have a binder for Male Ball Pythons, Female Ball Pythons, Other, and Available. Each animal has its own divider tab, and I hand write that month's tracking info on their paper.

I know to many this might seem like a lot of work, but I like that I have hard copies, and the security of knowing the info is in multiple places in case something gets lost or damaged. I don't like having to rely on a computer program.

This has been the most effective and efficient method for me. I tried the note cards, which is another popular method, but found that they were easily lost or damaged.

If you would like pictures of what each step of my weirdo system looks like, just let me know :)

Ahh, now I know where the QR codes come from! That's pretty neat! Thanks, guys, it's cool hearing everyone's methods and what works for them! I'll have to go check out those apps. The notebook has been working fine for me, but I keep imagining after a while I'll want to try doing something from my phone or computer.

Those of you that use Reptile Scan, I'm assuming you pay for the PRO? Is the app basically useless unless you subscribe?

I use reptile scan for my records, though I don't pay for pro. Pro for the most part lets you make new categories and actions along with seeing a photo of the animal on the my reptiles page on the computer website, along with a few other bells and whistles. I just paid for the $25 app

I only have one snake now but after reading everybodies recording strategies I feel like I should hop on the train. My only question is is it worth it to keep track of one snake? I don't plan on getting anymore due to financial/living space reasons. Of course I'd LOVE more sneks. Louie is just perfect for me now :) xx

You'd be best off with a dedicated notebook or a spreadsheet of some kind. Hang it or keep it near the snake and check things off / write things down.

    I'm sorry, but I can't find one.

Is there a good thread about suggestions for animal labels? Ex. Fire.2014.M.1?

I record birth year, origin, genealogy, locale, etc, but besides that, I'm just eyeballing things. Keeping records of every shed, feed, bowel seems like more work and worry than it's worth. I record hatchlings until they pass all checks - sheds, feeds, craps - but other than that, no thanks. I mark ovulations, prelay sheds and lay dates on a wall calendar.
