Which Herpstat to buy?
Hey All,
I have given up on my VE stats, and am going to give in and get a herpstat. Which would you recommend? I have a new 3 level 41 qt rack coming from Beeger Boxes in a few weeks.

Are thy wired with one strip of heat tape snaked between levels? If so, the Herpstat 1 would be perfect.

Re: Which Herpstat to buy?
Well if you wait until July 3rd, Spyder Robotics is having a 10% off sale. If you only need one set up right now, I would still pick up a Herpstat 2 because it is cheaper than 2 Herpstat 1's and you are ready to do a second setup anytime you want. Otherwise you will need to order another thermostat, perhaps paying regular price plus shipping, and having to wait for delivery. Just my $0.02.

Can a herpstat 2 be set up to run a UTH and a lamp? That is, to have temp control on UTH with one of the probes, and the second to function as a timer on a light?

Yes, it can. You can even set one channel up to run a humidifier if you purchase the optional humidity probe. I have a herpstat4 running 3 separate racks in my snake room and the fourth channel runs the humidifier that I use in the winter.

I picked herpistat first based on recommendations, and probably won't switch. Very happy with the product.

My new rack will have individual pieces of 11 inch THG tape. I don't need the stat for a couple weeks so I can definitely get on the sale.

All the Herpstats are great. I have two Herpstat 1s, a 2, and a 4. Never one issue. I like the above suggested method of buying the 2 so you are always ready to expand or run another item.

Re: Which Herpstat to buy?
They all work well, I bought my original herpstat in 2009 and it still works great.

Thats how all my racks are. 11" is all I order

So I can use a Herpstat 2 to run two separate racks?

Yes.
You can use any stat to run multiple racks AS LONG as the heating is IDENTICAL.

As long as all of the heating elements on a rack are the same throughout the rack or it is one continuous strip, then yes you only need one probe to operate the entire rack. That leaves the second probe free to regulate another device. However, if you have a rack that has different length heat strips on each shelf then you will need a probe for each of the strips/elements that vary, as the thermostat will just apply the same power to each element regardless of its size, and that could result in them heating up to different temps if they are not the same length as the strip the probe is measuring the temps from.
That being said, if you had two identical racks and all of the heating strips were the exact same length, you could operate both racks with just one probe mounted/measuring on one rack, as all of the power output would be equal to both racks and all strips. I'm not suggesting anyone do that in all practicality, but it is theoretically possible. I hope that helps clarify.

So just to confirm. If I have two identical racks, I can use one herpstat 2 to regulate both.

One channel on the herp2 and still have the second to use on anything else.
Just make sure you dont exceed max wattage on any thermostat.
So I ask AGAIN..... What is the issue with your VE?

I have a VE-100 that was used before I got it. Started randomly turning off lately. Would a new VE-200 be a big step up? After looking at prices im not sure I can drop 200$ on a herpstat2
-
Between a herpstat 1 and VE-200 which is the better buy?
-
I never used the VE100 because its an on/off only. The VE200 is either or. I have been using them since they came out without any problems including on my incubator.
I also have a Helix that I got instead of a herp.
I remember someone posting about a VE randomly turning off and it had to sit in a certain position, I assume that was you? (I have so much going on right now I rarely know what day it is)
You bought it second hand, are you sure the cord isnt just going bad ore loose where it plugs into the back?
-
It actually wasn't me who posted it originally, but I did comment on it. I am going to ditch the used VE100 no matter what. I think herpstat 1 might be my best bet as I do more research.

Don't know.
I've been using a VE-200 for many months with no issues; it was around $175 at an expo. Just called local reptile store for a Herpstat 2 and it is $299 which seems like a lot.

WoW!!!! The VE200 is $115 here in the states.

Re: Which Herpstat to buy?
I would go with the herpstat just for reliability alone. Think about it, a thermostat is probably the single most important piece of equiptment you will purchase for your husbandry temperature/ humidity control. Why go cheap on that? The other issue is be careful on the width and wattage of the heat tape as well. Some tape may be the same width but have differing wattages.:gj:
-
Good point. I think I might go with the herpstat 1. I need to check to make sure it can handle three levels of 11" heat tape. I assume that it would?

Pretty easily, yes.

Just make sure the 11" tape is all the same bc some may have different wattages. The tape you are using should be the same 11" tape for all three levels for the performance safety of the herpstat.
