    Help! scared for my snake
So i was examining my python and i noticed something, I fed him about two days ago and im examining him i look at his tail/rear end and there is a mouse claw coming out of the back of him? like out of the holes near his tail? i fed him frozen... is it just an undigested claw? that doesnt sound right. I dont know what to do and am worried!

    Pictures?

That doesn't sound right... Could you be talking about his spurs? They are little 'claws' on either side of the cloaca.

Hahaha, I thought they looked pretty weird when I first noticed them too. Like little earwig pincers. [emoji13]

They caught me off guard too, at first I didn't realize they were exposed all the time. They are just weird looking when you aren't used to them. [emoji14]

Oh man the spurs seem to startle everyone. :P The fascinating thing is that scientists believe they are a remnant of a leg structure. If you look at the skeletal structure of pythons, they actually have a hip bone, something a legless animal seems to have little use for. The spurs do not connect to the hip bone, but they believe that they were once similar to the spurs on the foot of other animals (like roosters) and have remained somewhat "free floating". They are now thought to be used during mating to help hold onto the female. The fact that pythons retain this ancient hip/leg remnant is one reason scientists list them as a more primitive species than the modern snakes that lack this structure. I think it just makes them even more special. :)
