Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Hi I have a male brooks kingsnake that's almost a year old and is about 33 to 36 inches long and 368 grams and I was wondering if that's common or not I bought him from a pets tore at a month old and what's a good size I should breed him if I do

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
I'm not sure about when he'll be ready to breed. He's larger than my kings were at 1. My kings were 250g and 220g when they turned 1. They're a little over two now and they're 725g & 645g each. How much and how often are you feeding him?
Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
I have been feeding him a small rat every 5 or so days I wait until he poops but when I got him the pet store was feeding him 5 pinkies a week but I switched him to adult mice then about a month or two later rat weanlings and he just sorta rapidly growing but now takes small rats down no problem he almost looks like he would take 2 but I know that would be way to much for him

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
He wasn't too big when I got him maybe a foot and I saw some lavender albino kings at the last show I went to and they were like 6 inches long super small and skinny is that bad? Because I had almost bought one but if their supposed to be 9 to 13

I had fed him yesterday his small rat so he weighed in at 410 grams but once he digests it he will be back down

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
I'm curious about the apparently disparate growth rates of these Kings, if the reported ages are accurate...
In looking at Firemaniv's growth record of his Brooks King "Pyro," I'm seeing a pattern that more closely approximates my Speckled King, who is supposed to be turning 1 year as of this month.
Pyro was a hatchling in 2013 (exact birthdate unknown ?)...his first reported weight was 59g on 8-12-14 (that includes the weight of a plastic tub that contains him on the scale (as do the subsequent photos - but maybe firemaniv zeroed the scale weight before putting the snake in the tub?)
9-21-14 : 82g
10-30-14 : 106g
1-12-15: 203g (obviously over a year old at this point?)
3-9-15: 236g
5-11-15: 290g
5-25-15: 339g
This lines up pretty closely with what I'm seeing. The last weight I took showed my Speckled King to be at 70g (excluding the container weight).
I'll be keeping a record as well of my Speckled in the "Then there were two" thread
Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Yea I went and read his thread but he is feeding rat fuzzies last time I read he fed his and I never fed fuzzies I went from adult mice to rat weanlings to small rats

I also zero the scale after I put the bucket on so I can have the most accurate weight

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Small rats are typically 60-80g. I have a Ball Python at around 500g that I'm still feeding rat weanlings (he'll be going to small rats or a double dose of rat weanlings when he hits 600g). I'm sure your king is capable of eating small rats, since he's doing it...but.....wow.
Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Yea he is a little piggy soon I'm going to start feeding him 1 small rat and another small prey item as these small rats don't really seem to make a dent in him anymore

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Your snake could also be a little older than you were told. I still think you might be feeding him just a little too much. I usually feed my kings 10-15% of their body weight every 5 days until they turn one then I scale it back to about 10% of their body weight every 7 days, sometimes a little less. My kings eat 2 jumbo mice or a jumbo mouse and a chick every 7 days and they're 650 and 700g each. Most kings are pretty aggressive feeders so you'll want to be careful not to overfeed them. I'd cut back on the size of his meals a bit and feed him every 7 days instead of every 5 days.
Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Ok and no the age is correct they had a chart they gave me with him that came from the breeder and it had the hatch date and all the feeding times and what he ate but I can't seem to find it anywhere

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
The only difference I really see in your feeding and mine is you do 2 smaller prey items while I fed one that's sorta big but can that really make that much of a difference? I've been feeding him sorta like my ball pythons one meal a week that's a pretty decent size

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Our feeding regiments are very similar but my kings are a year older and 300g larger. Your king looks healthy so do what works best for you. If you see him getting too chunky you can always dial it back.
Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
Yea that's what I do at times when he still looks a little big I just didn't know if it was bad for him that's why I was wondering if I was doing something wrong but next king I get I'm going to try that way and write down the differences

Re: Growth rate of brooks kingsnake
He sure does make the biggest mess when he does go to the bathroom but I really love him because he poops in one corner

This is what he gets every 5 to 7 days but it's beginning to look a little small for him
