Beware of the snake man
Go to Minnesota Minneapolis pets and read the ad this crazy lady posted about me. Beware of snake man

I'd really like to see the original ad that you've posted. From the sound of it, it seems a bit distasteful. It is of no benefit to the hobby to have somebody publicly asking for small cats and dogs as feeders.
Even if you own large constrictors, it isn't too difficult to find feeder rodents.
-
Re: Beware of the snake man
Mine is posted in the Brainerd Minnesota pets. Looking for large prey items to feed to my snakes. I have way to much time and $$ into my snake to feed them cats and dogs. Why would I spend thousands of $ in snakes to feed vaccinated cats and dogs to. Heck I have a 15 lb dog and a cat. The same person emailed me to chop me arm off and feed it to the snake.lol

Not enough qualifying information in the BEWARE post to find the original, we'll have to wait for frostysBP to post that link, if it's still up.

I didn't ask for dogs or cats that the thing. I asked for rabbits quail and guinea pigs and clearly stated what they were used for.

There are two sides to every story, which is why I wanted to see your original post.
While I do believe the lady exaggerated quite a bit in her posting, I do have a couple of issues regarding yours.
Issue number one, is it's not that difficult to find a rodent supplier without posting an ad on Craigslist. Sadly, people are naturally going to have problems with that post, even though your intentions are clear. (IMO adding the photo was also unnecessary)
Issue number two, is that it doesn't appear that you own any snakes that are able to consume the large prey items you are requesting.
You were completely within your right to post an ad, but in my opinion you could accomplish the same goal without doing so.
-
This is my best guess at the original ad based on frostyBP's description: "need large snake food"
Also editing my previous post to add this link, for future readers. EDIT: JK can't edit previous posts.

Re: Beware of the snake man
My carpet eats rabbits and one of my boas do and it won't be long before my goldenchild is on rabbits. I have a supplier down in the city's that I have been getting my rabbits from I was trying to find someone closer to me. I breed my own rats I just don't have the space at the moment for rabbit breeding

Yeah her post was pretty typical for a member of the snake-fearing general public. Interesting how people skew things to make them seem a certain way.

Yup just remember buy the stores old meat for snake food

Oh I saw this earlier today. It pissed me off, especially with the whole "I hate snake people" comment…well, I hate idiots, maybe I should post a warning about them on Craigslist...
Anyhow, as a fellow Minnesotan, I'm guessing your supplier in the cities you're referring to is probably Twin Cities Reptiles. They're pretty awesome, but yeah, they're pretty far from your general area. I get why you'd look for prey closer to you; have you considered ordering from some of the online vendors to have them delivered?

Re: Beware of the snake man
Yea I was going to go to monsterfeeders. And order some bulk.

Re: Beware of the snake man
Yeah, try Monster, his shipping prices aren't too bad either, especially being in MN like us. I like to buy all my frozen in bulk too, it makes it a lot easier to feed when it's time, rather than going to the store all the time. I try to buy enough stuff to last 14 to 20 weeks at a time.

Re: Beware of the snake man
That's a great route to go. Like someone else said, you were perfectly within your right to post your message, but some people just do not understand snakes…the crazy lady being a prime example.

Well before I ever had a snake I'd get bored at work and hop on Craigslist. I'd post a picture of a Burmese and tell everyone that "Shadow" was once fed kittens by the previous owner and will not take anything else. I'd ask in the pet section for anyone with a steady supply of baby white kittens (Shadow prefers white).
It was a fun experiment. I got a lot of emails from people telling me how much they laughed at the obvious tongue-in-cheek post and a few telling me they were reporting me to the cops and all of that. I kept it up for about a month, I laughed at the responses.
One lady wrote me a nasty gram saying she cried for a day after reading my post and that she had reported me to the FBI or something.
I found it hysterical.

Gee thanks. I'm currently dealing with a very ignorant/uninformed witch-with-a-B spouting off on all my ball python sale threads on the local FB classified pet forums about evil snake owners taking the FTGH kittens as food for their snakes. Of course she can't point to a single instance that she knows of or name anyone doing it, but since she read it on the Internet it must be true.

Excuse me...? We have a hard enough time with people thinking our snakes are a danger to society without help! I would have reported you too, if only to make a point that you shouldn't be going around saying stuff like that. If there is a shadow of a doubt that it will come across as satire, nix it...

You must be very good at perpetuating stereotypes.
-
For fun, i went on Craigslist and posted something just for laughs in the pet section and got everything from "snakes are vile...blah blah blah" to "I hope you die a painful death soon..".
For the record I don't even have a Burmese
NEEDED ASAP: Bushel or so of young white kittens.
https://post.craigslist.org/imagepre...IQ_600x450.jpg
https://post.craigslist.org/imagepre...3IQ_50x50c.jpghttps://post.craigslist.org/imagepre...AYG_50x50c.jpg
OK I got a couple nasty-grams from posting this previously. Someone wants me dead and someone for some reason thinks some kind of "karma" will come from this.
Lame and un-professional. I'm just a woman with a large snake that needs to eat!
And for the lady telling me how she "feels" snakes to be vile, disgusting and so on - we maybe you should look at your own diet before judging. Hypocrite!
Hello friends!
I have a very healthy Burmese Python "Shadow" who had escaped from his previous owners tank and ate his cat's entire litter of kittens.
Well the unfortunate part is that Shadow will now only feed on white kittens. She refuses to take anything else.
My current kitten supplier has run out and I am now in search of a more stable supply or short term supply of about a bushel of them. She is a voracious kitten eater so she will take many in one feeding, then be good for about 3 weeks.
Please shoot me an email with details. Shadow is hungry and she get's a little agitated when she is.
Attached are pictures of Shadow and the perfect size kittens
Thanks and God Bless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any sane person could tell this is a BS post and I did get a few emails back saying they had a good laugh at it.
One lady said she reported me to the cops and animal control lol
Another said she cried for a day after reading my post.

Must be nice to live in your own little world and not care about how YOUR actions reflect on other snake keepers.
This hobby does not need people like you...............GROW UP, stop acting like you are 12, your stupid immature little posts on CL and here are NOT FUNNY and do not help snake keepers, they just give more ammunition to those trying to take our rights away.

Pretty sure that if there was "a shadow of a doubt that it will come across as satire" then most intelligent people would get it. I'm not worried about the rest.
-
Do you not understand what everyone is saying to you? Some people may find it funny, however there is enough bad attention on the reptile hobby that doing this doesn't bring anything to the table, it comes across as immature and like someone is seeking attention even if it is negative. It is right up there with people who troll the internet just looking to start trouble. This doesn't contribute anything positive to the hobby. I get that you think there is satire there, but for every person that thought "hey that hillarious" there were probably 10 that were disgusted, and negative attention/news travels faster, how hard would it be for someone to link that post to lets say PETA, they will run with something like this and stir up a dust storm. There is already enough false info floating around about large constrictors, things like this don't need to contribute to more misinformation.

Wow. This is completely unnecessary. Anti-reptile people just wait for any kind of fodder they can use to justify outlawing snakes. We don't need to give them anymore ammo. Combined with people's inability to grasp sarcasm, and this is a deadly mixture. If this hobby is going to be taken seriously by the general public, we all need to avoid rhetoric like this. We want to be seen as competent and professional exotic animal keepers, not psychos that feed cute baby animals to vicious killer pythons. What I have found when educating about reptiles is that you cant use sarcasm, innuendos, or basically anything other than direct talk. People make assumptions and hear what they want to. To be respected as a hobby by the public, we must be the first to respect the animals and how we speak about them. Pitbull owners have the same issue with people generally misunderstanding the breed. But you don't hear them sarcastically speaking off the cuff about how their pit killed a kid, or only eats cats. Be smart and don't detract from the hard work that others put into pushing our hobby forward.

Actually HUGE difference between telling the truth and not sugar coating things (which often offend people hence the avatar) and acting irresponsibly like a 12 years old (that would be YOU), but I am not expecting you to understand the difference since you have shown some serious lack of comprehension so far :gj:

You have some well thought and intelligent ideas here. Refreshing when someone has a hard time with another poster and does not verbally attack tham and call them names. I can't take those people seriously.
On another note I posted this on Craigslist as well and a lot of people thought it was great:
TURTLE: To Good Home. Eats Pizza only. (Sewer)
http://images.craigslist.org/00v0v_c...MW_600x450.jpg
He can be a handful, but I have this turtle who's about 35 years old. He lost his job after he could no longer pass as a teenager.
Taking offers (rehoming fee)

Sorry but this is not how it works, we don't ban people because we do not like them or they don't fit in or their ignorance, or just because (if it was the case NO ONE would be safe ;)).
People are banned if they violate the TOS which the staff enforces with the infraction system, 100 points leads to a month ban and 150 points leads to a permanent ban.
Ignorance is not a TOS violation.
Now what does exist is the reputation system which let a user know what people think and whether they approve of the user idea or not, obviously Reptile Dysfunction is as low as you can get showing the disapproval of the community.
So no need for people to thank you in the hope that a member will be banned because it will not happen, but rest assured that the thread is obviously being monitored.

See, there's a huge difference between this and the post about the burm eating kittens. Everyone over the age of five knows turtles can't eat pizza (and no one would be offended even if they did) and you inserted the image of a cartoon turtle. There is absolutely no way someone could take this as anything but a joke, even if they didn't catch the reference. I still don't see the point in posting things like that, but there's really not any harm done; I'm willing to bet you didn't get angry emails about people calling the authorities on you for that one either.
The post about the burm on the other hand doesn't automatically come across as a joke. You used pictures of actual animals, and claimed that the burm ate something that a burm actually could and would eat if it were available and the snake were hungry enough. Also feeding a burm cats would probably be considered animal cruelty in a lot of states if it were happening (rodents are generally considered non-dangerous exotics, and in NC at least there is a lot less legislation on what you can and can't do with them than for dogs/cats). If I just saw that on the internet I would be 50/50 on whether someone was joking or if some sociopath actually bought a giant constrictor to look like a badass and had no idea what they were doing. I've seen people make posts about similarly ludicrous things on forums that don't appear to be trolling. That whole post just played into every misconception the general public already has about big constrictors.

Boom, you think this is funny because to you it's ludicrous that someone would actually take pets and feed it to other pets.
I have first hand knowledge about how this very much isn't the case. A few months back on tumblr there was a user who kept a burm, who advocated trapping as a way to feed large constrictors cheaply. At first they said they only trapped pest species and let others go, but later they admitted they would trap dogs and cats. Not just strays either, they'd trap animals that they knew to be neighbors pets because they felt in the right at the animals where trespassing on their property after they'd warned the owners to keep them confined to their own yards.
This person saw absolutely nothing wrong with this, and maintained that they were totally in the right, even in the face of massive criticism from the rest of the tumblr reptile community. They even linked youtube how to videos to encourage others to do this. That's how mess up this was. Eventually we got the youtube channel taken down and they deleted their blog to avoid anymore backlash. It only would have taken one PETA or HSUS nut finding that blog before they scampered to make a whole lot of trouble for the rest of us though. The biggest problem for the reptile hobby as a whole is that it's looked at with fear and suspicion by those outside of it, and it only takes one bad apple to spoil the whole bunch. That's why we need to present a united image of rational, reasonable, sane, and responsible pet owners. When people like that do pop up, it's up to us to call them on it, or else go down with them when the inevitable crap storm hits the public fan.

Are you kidding me? An entire community on Tumblr sat back and just complained about this? Why didn't anybody actually get up from their keyboard and do something about this? Why didn't YOU do something? Simply sitting there and talking about it, and getting their youtube channel taken down does nothing. HSUS and PETA DEFINITELY needed to be contacted about that, not to mention police.
My point is, as a reptile community we need to identify and condemn these psychos who feed cats and dogs to snakes. If people are going to see us as respectable and responsible exotic pet owners, WE OURSELVES need to do more to prevent this from happening. Not just sit back and hope that the general public doesn't find out.

The problem with organizations like HSUS and PETA getting involved is they will take an Isolated Incident like this and use it to further their own agenda and not really focus on the one individual, but the entire community and how evil we are. Law Enforcement and maybe the local SPCA would be a better choice.

It was not "just complained about." A private pet owner started posting about trapping to feed their snake on their personal blog. Other snake keepers sent them communications that this is a terrible idea and explained why. The person became belligerent, and the more people got involved and tried to reason with them, the more hostile they became while trying to justify their methods. The youtube account we got taken down because we were able to report in to youtube under animal cruelty, but the posts the person made didn't violate tumblr's TOS, so they wouldn't do anything about it. They eventually nuked their own blog because too many people got mad at them for what they were doing, citing the oft cry of "tumblr is too sensitive! Everyone is offended by everything!"
Unfortunately, they didn't provide anything that would have identified the area they lived in, or you bet your butt we would have been mass calling the authorities in the area (did it the other day when some girl in kentucky posted about how she was (illegally) taking box turtles out of the wild and giving them new, pretty paint jobs on their shells. Ketucky Fish and Wildlife still said they couldn't do anything unless they had a specific location). Problem with the internet is that it's world wide. I live in Washington, and that person lived... idk I could maybe guess "south-ish". Doesn't really do a whole lot of good to call the police and tell them about how "someone on the internet is being bad, no sorry officer I don't actually know where."
What we did accomplish was stopping them spreading terrible advice, especially on tumblr which has a great deal of younger community members just starting out. Maybe some reason got through to them as well, but maybe not. The best we could do was tell them "stop that, you're wrong."

I appreciate that you wanted to help the situation, but at that point preventing bad press for snakes pales in comparison to helping save neighborhood pets. Any IT professional worth his weight in salt could have gotten their IP address easily. What that person was doing wasn't just "bad advice," that was a MAJOR animal cruelty case. With people like that you cant just tell them to stop it, as if they were a petulant child.

Sorry, that may have worked in 'the good old days' of the internet, but these days it's not so easy. And calling PETA or HSUS and giving them free ammunition is just plain stupid.

Depends on how savvy the perp was. It would have taken a warrant or court order to get Tumblr to give up the IP address, and if it came from overseas or through a proxy, good luck tracking down the perp. It can be done, but it depends on how many resources the authorities want to dedicate to it.

Agreed, they would be the last groups I'd call in on a neglect or cruelty investigation. Local AC would have been fine but without a location that's a nonstarter.
