How long do you quarantine?

How long does everyone quarantine a new snake when they get one? I've heard everything from one week, to six months. Also, what are your procedures? How do you keep things separate?

i honestly never done it with any of my snakes...i know, i should have. but from what i hear at least 90days, in a seperate room and use seprate tools (tongs, etc) and deal with your previous snake/herps first

90 days min here. I set them up in a completely different room, and have a different set of "tools" for my collection vs the new snake. I work with my established animals first, wash up, and then work with the ones in seperation.

Ok. How about if you have several quarantined animals from different sources? All kept separate from each other as well?

If you have pythons and boas, I have heard you should always keep them separate due to IBD. Is this necessary?

i keep my BPs and my BCI in the same room, about 5 ft from eachother. it depends really who you get it from on where to put them, however, when having both boas and pythons you shopuld always use seprate tools and always work with the pythons first. from what i hear, IBD is not airbourne. thinking about a boa? alex hue is great, i ordered my female BCI from him

Well.. right now I have two sandboas. Can they carry IBD as well?

I am thinking of a red tail in the near future. However, I want a surinam BCC, not a colombian BCI. :)

yea, any boid can. have you had experiance with large snakes? suris get huge. i think u have though, im just not sure

Yes I do. I work with large burms and BCIs on a daily basis. I've done my research. Besides that, suris tend to grow at a slower rate than BCIs, and I plan on getting a young snake.

yea i remember reading about you working with one, i just wasnt sure if it was you or not. you sound ready, and from what i have (BCI) its a great snake. ive never heard anything bad about BCCs except they get big and tend to be less forgiving on husbandry errors

They are great snakes. BCCs and BCIs basically require the same husbandry, just if you get it wrong with a BCC you can get in trouble easier.

Some of the sizes you hear about BCCs getting to are exaggerated, or nontypical. They do get large, but not burm or retic large. It's like if someone said to you that BPs grow to 7' (I believe that is the record)

With our pet snakes....we're not nearly as hardcore as with our breeding stock. Pet snakes usually 2 months - We keep them in our heated garage far from the rest of or snakes(pets or breeders). Anything thats getting introduced into our breeding stock will not be introduced for at least 6 months. We never quarantine multiple new snakes in the same areas either.
But thats just our procedure.

I keep my boa in a seperate room from my BPs. It just makes me feel more peace of mind, knowing that they are not really near each other, just in case my boa is a carrier. I believe in being more safe than sorry, since I have read of whole collections lost because one boa had IBD and spread it to other boas and pythons in the same room.
If I get new BPs, I keep them in another room for about 90 days. It's just safer to quarantine.

Yes.. I'm a firm believer in quarantine. I get paranoid though. If I touch a boa that carries IBD.. how do I be safe for my python when I handle her? Is just washing hands good enough? Should you change your clothes? It's always making me nervous since at work I handle snakes every day.. boas.. pythons.. etc etc.
