    Tough one guys!! Need help!!!
Ok guys I'm stuck between getting a boa or another ball python we have two a normal female an male spider which are my husbands but should be mine haha...anyways for MY first snake I've looked into both so I need opinions to help me pick....my husband is no help ha he's raised both so we know what we're getting into or well he does I only know how big they get lol [emoji4] [emoji4] [emoji4] [emoji4]

I love boas but when they get big you almost always have to have someone else their to help you hold them when they get full grown. I have a BCI boa, male and he should only get to 7ft to 9ft (even 9ft is a bit big for a boa but I have seen it). He is only 5ft and is already hefty to hold onto. I personally love the ball pythons more though. Need less space and I can hold on to them far more easily. They are also a little less demanding on care.

They are both great snakes. Got to a reptile expo and hold on to both and find one that you can create a bond with.

My friend has a full grown boa and I loved him but was a bit heavy when he decided to wrap his full body around me lol. Balls are neat I'm just super picky when it comes to what type I like and want lol. I just can't seem to pick between the two ha! Idk if we have any expos here plus its kinda hard to take all the kiddos they want everything an wanna touch everything haha

I have 5 year old twins and a 6 year old. Haha, I know what that is like. I cannot choose for you though. I will always choose ball pythons but if you really want that boa then there is nothing wrong with that.

Boa hands down! I love my little beeper but both of my boas are just so much more interactive and inquisitive. Plus when they get bigger, they aren't hiding 24/7 and mine seem to actually like to come out and wander around. But just be prepared for larger food, larger cages and larger poops!! :O Rosey my 6' girl is like a giant puppy dog, Victoria is almost a yearling so she is still only about 2'. They do put on some girth, if you want smaller, just buy a male and feed conservatively. Males stay much thinner than females. Rosey is fairly heavy but I just throw her around my shoulder and she holds onto me with her tail and off we go. just got to be careful not to bang her head on stuff as shes loves to check everything out lol. But definitely a boa!

Lol I have a 6 yr old 4yr old almost 2 yr old and all BOYS an just got custody of my husbands daughter so its fun haha! Well honestly I've never been a snake person till I got Eve for my husband she's our 1 yr old normal ball cause my hubby is always working I get bored an take her out an two days ago or so I bought my hubby a 1 1/2 yr old handsome lil male ball python an he just wraps around my neck an just hangs on lol. I've found a guy with baby boas an I've been looking at one of his males I'm just so ahhhhh cause I can't choose an don't help that my husband wont help me decide either lol

Well think of a boa as a giant BP that doesn't want to hide 24/7 and is more inquisitive. If you want something that doesn't get big though like 8-10' big, then make sure you get a male. They usually get around 5-6' average. Also BCI generally stay a little smaller than BCC which are true red tails. You can also look into smaller boas like Caulker Cay or Hog Island. Both of those stay smaller around 4-6'. I hear they are pretty docile too but I have never owned one so cant vouch for that. Both of my BCI girls though are like lounge snakes. And Dottie my pied beeper is like a rock with eyes that eats rats once a week lol.

Pull it out of hat? But boa in the hat three times and ball python in a hat three times and let fate decide. That is what I do. Or inny minny miney mo! <- Is that how you would spell it? lol.

Wow, he is very pretty. Very dark too. At least that is a BCI and not a BCC. So he should not get any larger then 9ft. 7ft average. Go for it.

Awww little guy, Yeah you're fine. My guess is with conservative feedings, he will get to about 6' but you could be surprised if it has any BCC crossed into but I would honestly be floored if it got over 8' especially as a male. Also boas don't grow really fast, much slower than a beeper. Dottie went from 12" to 3' in just over 4 months where as Rosey went from about 16" to about 6' in just over 2 years.

Another for boa. I adore my sunglow. He is such a great snake. 7-9 feet for a male BCI is huge IMO. I think 5-6 feet is much more common and easy for one person to handle. I have handled several male BCIs and they have all been dreams and very manageable.

That wouldn't make sense. My boa is only 10 months old and he is already 5ft and he is still growing.

That's crazy! Are you sure of age and type? The reason I ask is because they usually grow very slowly! We have a 5ft and an 8ft RTB and both are several years old and still taking their time

Well, I'd expect a short lived animal then, because that is absolutely insane to have a male BC that is under a year old at 5 feet long.

Saying that it would not "make sense" based on the size of your snake is misinformation. You would have to look at multiple animals, and subspecies at that age and size to make a conclusion like that. I can tell you that the educated breeders of quality BC's rarely have adult male breeders go beyond the 6 foot mark, and that includes the some of BCC locals.

Few, people understand the way BC's should be fed and raised. If you want to learn about the proper upbringing of a boa constrictor read

THE COMPLETE BOA CONSTRICTOR By Vincent Russo and look for any information in print by Gus Rentfro. He is one of the world's top authorities on BC's.

While there are some large boa constrictors out there, they are not the norm, and the odds of a giant diminish further with a male. Size sexual dimorphism is common in BCs.

I believe that with the PROPER feeding regime, and attention to husbandry there is no reason the O/P should not be able to handle and enjoy a BC.

Most, but not all claims of giant BCs are exaggerated, and when the tape comes out, the length of many snakes is actually far less than what is originally stated.

The boa constrictor is a very rewarding and interesting snake to own and raise.

Go into it with some research and preparation and you should be fine.

Hi, I'm late to the party. Congrats on your Boa!

Good choice. I went to a Boa for my second (BP first) on Sauzo's recommendation and I am well pleased.

Besides, it's a good idea to have a garbage disposal for what the BP's won't eat! :D

Well, it depends. Some color snakes brighten up, some darken up with age. Depends upon genetics. That's why some morphs are the way they are, to bring out the best -like yours I'm fairly certain. I only know, or rather, don't know enough to be dangerous, so I'll stop here. Someone else can get into better detail and expaination.

    Great choice,

Now remember the book I mentioned, and remember not to get carried away with feeding, but at the same time don't shy away from feeding.

You are going to notice this species is IMO much more interesting and enjoyable than the typical royal.

    Note I said IMO.

Ah ok, guess I missed the het part. Boas can change their color to an extent depending on feeling. By this I mean they can darken and lighten a little, nothing like a chameleon color change or going from white to black. Plus they do tend to change a little as they age. I live in the stone age and don't have a digital camera so I cant take pictures of Rosey but when she was a baby, she was very light, almost looked hypo but now she is an adult and she is darker with a salmon belly and lower sides and he cheeks are a salmon color too. I have no idea what cross she is as she is a pet shop Colombian but she is the sweetest snake I own.

Nice looking mom and dad, I'm sure the baby will be great looking too. And you'll love boas, they are full of personality. Vicky has decided hides aren't cool anymore so now she buries herself under the aspen in the front of the cage with just her nose and eyes sticking out :snake: I'm guessing she thinks a mouse might walk past the front of the cage :)

Lol I think beepers spend their whole lives perfecting the art of using the least amount of energy to get things done :P About the only time I see Dottie come out is to poop, drink water or if she smells a rat during feeding time. Otherwise about every 2-3 days I will catch her poking her head out of her hide or moving from one hide to another. And yeah you're going to love your boa :D
  • 04-04-2015, 09:34 PM
    artgecko
Great choice! You should love your new boa. I enjoy my boas much more than my BPs (I have 3 of each now). The boas, as a whole, are much more outgoing and less scared.. They want to crawl and explore much more than the BPs (at least the ones I have).

A male BCI should top out at 6' or less (unless it is a freakish example) you can ask the breeder for lengths / weights on the parents to give you an idea. I only have males because I didn't want to deal with the size of an adult female Bci.

Good luck with him and be warned... You can't ever just have one boa. :P

Lol yeah they aren't really cheap. Vicky ran me $400 and I consider that a pretty good deal for Redgroup/Burke Lipstick sunglow. I was eyeballing a female jungle sunglow from a Ronne line but I couldn't bring myself to drop $600 for it although it did have a nice stripy tail :)
