    Another rock background in progress
Been working on the next background all night. This is gonna be EPIC!

What's your opinions should I glue sand onto the rock bits or just paint it?

    That's amazing!
Why not do both? Paint it, and sprinkle some sand into the wet paint for texture.

Have been painting. It's no where near complete but my finger is literally peeling skin from pressing the airbrush.

I dunno, looks okay I guess. But it's not exactly like I envisioned. If I were to do it again I'd use different colors. Oh well, let's see how it looks when finished.

I don't hate it or anything, it's just that I regret putting too much blues and reds in the base color. The idea was to lay the tans and browns on top and a bit will show through. Basically I was over enthusiastic and put too much of the undercolors. If I do it again I'd stick to only earth tone colors, maybe just a tiny bit of red/blue. But it's still in progress, so... We'll see.

By the way, have any of you guys sealed your backgrounds with matte modge podge? Is it really a matte finnish, and does it dull the colors? I don't want to use varathane as even the satin one is just too glossy for me.

I bought a bottle of that dupli color top coat, maybe I will try that too.

I personally liked the other version just because of the color variety, but that looks fantastic, almost like a pic of an actuall fossile

LOL, different strokes for different blokes...

It's not really a new version, I just layered some warmer colors on top. I'm keeping a brown colored lizard in the enclosure so I think it would match better. Still not finished though!

    DONE PAINTING!

Now I just need to find a way to seal it without ruining it.

Please note that the photo is different lighting from previous, hence less shadows.

Dang, the T-Rex really pops in the final version! I think it looks fantastic.

If you don't mind me asking, how did you create the T-Rex part? It's a lot more detailed than anything I've seen created as part of a background.

The T rex was a model kit bought at a toy store. I cut it in half and put it in the "rock" and painted it.

Looks great! You needed the contrast to make the skeleton pop. Nice! Did you model the skeleton or apply some kind of bought product?

Now that I've done T rex, if I make more enclosures I'd really like to do Spinosaurus aegypticus. Too bad there aren't any reasonable priced model kits out there that I'm aware of. But imagine this thing as the background in your enclosure:

As stated above, the skeleton was a model kit.

I used paper clay. NOT recommended. I will not use that material again for this.

I hate that the uv tube reflector is blocking the view. Any recommendations for a smaller one?

And to think I almost gave up on this one... I gave it one more try thank God. This is my favorite one.

I'm making a total of 5. 4 down, one to go. Just need to put lights, will try to get it all done this morning...

Then I really need to clean my house. Tools everywhere...

I'm thinking of getting a t5 tube with no reflector. I don't know any commercially available ballasts I can buy? My understanding is they are smaller and will not block the view.

Might be a little tacky and lame but sticking a red LED in the eye of the T. rex would look cool.

I dunno man, red eyed dinosaurs like those cheap toys?

It has leds. I am too tired to turn them on and take pictures, but it is more of a moonlight effect. I used RGB leds, so I can change colors.

All 5 enclosures are now complete. I still have some of the old hides in there though. Will switch them out later.
