Steady supply of Rat Food
Hello everyone,
I am having a difficult time finding a steady supply of decent rat food for an affordable price. Where does everyone get their lab block from? I can't afford $30/bag but it seems the price just keeps going up and up. Is there somewhere that sells food for less? Either a store or online is fine, bulk would also be just fine.
So... Where does everyone get their feed?

We get Mazuri 6f for 22.00 a bag and that's only because we buy 2000 pound a month of it.. In south Fl I don't really know where you'd look.
-
I get mine at local feed stores. 30 dollars for a 30 pound bag isn't a bad price, especially when the chain petstores sell 5 pound bags for 15 dollars.

I was using Mazuri, but I found some generic dog food at Publix for $18/40# with 21% protein, 8% fat and 4.5% fiber. There is actually some Mazuri left in the feed trays after 2-3 months. Weinlings are growing like weeds and production is good.
May be worth a try and it's readily available at any Publix.
I don't know if this link works, but it is what I have been using- http://www.publix.com/p/RIO-PCI-166746?ch=15.2.3.

I use native earth (harlan teklad 2018). I buy from either petfoodirect or pet360.. If you do the bulk deal from pet360, it's not a bad price (considering shipping is free). They also send coupons every few weeks, which makes it a better deal. I get my aspen from them too.

I get mine (F-R-M) from the feed store 50lb bag for $19, or you can get lower protein 50lb bag for $15.

Re: Steady supply of Rat Food
The great thing about rats is they eat anything! I give mine a combination of dog food, trail mix, and fruit and veggie scraps. My pregnant or nursing rats also get yogurt treats.
Healthy rats make healthy snakes :)

Mine get table scraps too. All the preggos and mommas also get boiled eggs.

Local feed store, Mazuri 6f 50lb for $25.

TSC has doggy bag brand food, 50 lbs for like $15. I mix that with Mazuri 6F.

Petfoodirect or pet360 for Native Earth (aka Harlan Teklad, the best brand you can buy)
Both are the same company under different names. They often switch which is having the better deal. So be sure to check both and compare.
Last time I ordered food from either with a promo code, I got 200 pounds of food shipped free to my house for $75. And the time before that was around $85.
So at best, you can pay $18/50lbs ($14/40lbs).
At worst, you pay the full $99/200 lbs @ $24/50lbs ($20/40lbs).

Went to reorder this and the price is now $103.99 but they killed it with new shipping prices. The cheapest to my house was $111 for shipping alone. Man, I'm hoping this changes soon. If anyone has found a loophole I'd be grateful. For now, I guess I'm trying publix dog food.

Hi! I actually make my own food mix! My rats and mice(And our pet hamster.) Love it. I made about twenty-ish pounds for around $10. That's only $.50 a pound, so that's awesome. It might not be great for people with a ton of racks, but for those with only a few racks/breeders, or who keep them as pets it's awesome.
1 Box of generic rice puff cereal(Like an off brand Rice Krispies.) I paid about $1.24 for a box of off brand.
1 Box of off brand corn flakes. Also paid around $1.50 for a large box.
1 Box of off brand Cheerios. About $1.24 for a large box.
1 Half of a 48 oz container of oats. For off brand, it's about $2 for this size, and since for one batch you'll only use half, it's $1.
About half a small bag of kitten food for the moms and babies. Most expensive part. $3-$4, depending on brand.
About 1lb of bulk sunflower seeds. I got them at Pet Supplies in the bird isle for $1.28 per lb.
(Optional) About a pound of (roasted) Soy beans. Paid $2.78 per pound at a health food store.
And last, dog food. We just put in our dogs food as we see fit, but you can get a small bag for around $3.
So that's about $15 if you have to go out and buy dog food, and you get the beans. Without having to get either, it's about $9-$10. Make about 20lbs.
A little more expensive than some of the foods you guys mentioned, but our local farm stores sell rat poison in bulk, not food! :P Lol. The only other rat food we have near us is the bulk from the pet store for almost $2 per lb.
