Has anyone ever had a rats tummy split just from thawing under the heat lamp, not while the snake was eating it? :bleh:

Yep - usually it's followed a a thaw in (baggie'd) hot water then too long under the heat lamp while juggling too many other things - truly nasty. Even worse than that though is when it all looks good and fine until the snake starts constricting/eating it and **P0P** goes the entrails. Ack.

Sure - guts happen. ;) Freezing anything causes the cellular structure to break down a bit...with rodents the abdominal skin is fairly thin to start with, so once it's frozen & reheated it tends to weaken some.

I once left a jumbo rat on a heating pad too long w/o thinking about it then fed it to my male Surinam redtail...he hit the rat like a ton of bricks & it popped like a water balloon. Now THAT was funky!

Yeah, I know what happens to the cells and all that, bio/premed major, but it was gross and annoying

ROFL!!! Hate to break it to you, but if you're a bio/premed major & find something like a little ruptured rodent "gross & annoying", then you've got a tough learning career ahead of you! Hang in there! :puke: :puke: :puke:

I can deal with all of that, been doing it for years, its just that is had time to cook and it was annoying to clean up, I don't exactly have a bio hazard box in the house and all the apporpriat cleaning agents within arms reach. I am actually about to graduate, but just cuz I do it at work doesn't mean I want it in my house Hahahaha

The last few feedings I've split the gut, lol. I think I'm warming them up too much too fast when thawing. I put the baggy in hot tap water, then after the water goes luke warm, I empty and put hot water in again. It bursts right in the bag, so I try to stuff the guts back in before feeding...luckily I'm not squeemish or anything, lol. Last night the gut busted, and it was more blood than guts. Of course, it had to be the night that I planned on taking pics. So I feel sorry for the person that develops my film and sees pics of a snake covered in blood and guts swallowing a bloody fuzzy thing. :)

This is kind of an old post but.. I'll share my disgusting little story.

This was the only time I bought a frozen rat anywhere.. from then on, I only produced my own.

So I thawed it out, and left it overnight with Shelby who didn't eat it, and not only did it SMELL the next morning, it's um... manly parts sort of ruptured and leaked all over Shelby's tank.
