Fuzzy is interested in me!

I was checking on Fuzzy earlier, just hanging out watching him. S/he was on top of its hide and was staring at me; then it started sticking out its neck and like coming straight towards me. It was cute seeing it, though it probably sounds ridiculous the way I typed it. I think s/he is recognizing that I change the water bowl, most the tank, change the wet towels. It makes me feel more confident about picking him/her up.

I think they definitely recognize their keepers and maybe even have some curiosity about us.

BPs are probably the easiest snakes to handle IMO once you get the confidence to pick her up. They jut kind of use your arm as a branch and chill, unlike colubrids that tend to want to dart away when you pick them up.

^^^^^^^^^^ This. I tried to hold an adult corn snake the other day when I went to pick up my BPs supper, and it shocked me how quick it was and how much it wanted away. I will stick to my chill little BP girl.

They totally know who takes care of them. And mine and I have a system when I am going to handle her. I tap lightly on the glass, tap on her hide, and give her a little touch before I pick her up. Which is different from feeding time where there is no tapping, just noms

I'll have to try something like that. I almost picked mine up today wheb I was changing the water and such. But...I didn't.

You'll get there. Is it bites you are worried about?

I honestly don't know what it is that scares me. I guess it's the fear of being bitten, even though our ball hasn't ever even acted like s/he was going to strike or anything. I've always been scared of snakes. Now though I can hold Fuzzy, reach in and grab the water dish and have been messing around a bit more. I still can't grab Fuzzy though. I just get freaked out.

Yeah, s/he did that then went straight out towards me. Totally adorable. :)

Could always start when you switch the water out, just stroking the snake, giving it some gentle pets (which I know sounds weird for a snake but eh I do it).

I didn't say grab. I said stroke. While Fuzzy is in it's hide or something.

If she comes out of the hide to inspect what you're doing, try letting her be the one to initiate handling sessions. Hold your hand level in her path and let her crawl over it. You can start slow this way and just "walk" her over your hands by placing one in front of the other slightly elevated off the floor of her enclosure without taking her out of it entirely.

My wild caught corn seems to be appreciative of me capturing him and does not try to run away. He even escaped while we were on vacation and slithered right to us when we went looking for him as to say, "I hadn't seen you in a while so I went looking for you, and I found you..." lol

I held a colubrid for for the first time this weekend, a rough green snake, and i almost dropped it because of how fast it is. I couldn't believe it, especially since I am very used to my lazy ball.

I was a bit nervous when I first got my little ball but it didn't take me long to work up the nerve to handle her even though, once in awhile, she still freaks me out - looks like she is getting ready to hit me (but on the other hand, how much would it hurt me, she's not very big!). I now make sure that I gently rub her side before picking her up and she is ready to go. Even my two year old grandson has handled her and he loves the snake, just have to keep an eye on how rough he is! Once I have her out I take her all over with the house with me and let her wander all over the furniture, windowsills, heaters (old hot water system with a casing that never gets hot) and our stairs. She seems to enjoy it and will sometimes attempt to come back out when I try to put her back in her enclosure (she usually wins these fights and gets to come back out). I think that ball pythons are the best pet ever and have been educating my family, friends and co-workers about them. A lot of people have an innate fear of snakes and have a hard job accepting them as pets. I was there not too long ago but never again and am considering a Dumeril Boa as an addition to my collection (that I haven't really started yet). A couple of years ago there was a big news story, here in town, concerning a scary snake that got loose in an apartment building. Extensive damage was caused by authorities (of some sort) to find the animal and I'm not sure if they ever did. I found out recently that this scary snake was a ball python.
