Python-77 invited me on over here to get some info on my 2 newest babies. I am brand new to snakes of any kind and I am now owned by a Male ball python (about 32 inches) and a Corn Snake (about 18 inches)
I have tons of reptiles but have jumped feet first into snakes and am still somewhat scared of them but willing to get over that.
I have held the Corn (Candy) but haven't held the Ball(Chase) yet. I have rubbed him and moved him around but not actually held him (yet).
The BP belongs to my 13 yr old daughter and the Corn belongs to my 9 Yr old son.
I look forward to learning MANY new things here!!! :D

New to forum and to snakes
Welcome! Trust me, you learn things without even knowing it. Here, they drill....no, to harsh a word, they burrow....no, still to harsh. They teach things into your head so well you can't forget them.
-
Welcome to the site! You will definately gather some great info here!
-
welcome! got any pics of your herps? we'd love to see them! :)

Welcome to the site Reptilady.

Let's see..at the present time, my animal list consists of...
These are all my animals, not just reptiles.

1 Green Tree Frog
1 guinea pig
1 Tokay Gecko
2 Iggy's
4 Dogs
4 Sulcatas
4 Eastern Box Turtles
5 Bearded Dragons
5 Red eared sliders
and now a Corn snake and a BP
I also have 6 Fuzzies that the kids said I can NOT feed so we are feeding them and going to start a breeding project. Have 4 Pinkies of 6 left (they don't mind me feeding them)
And, I have 3 kids and a VERY understanding husband!!!! LOL

what are you housing them in (cage size, water bowl size, substrate, etc...) are experts will pick apart your husbandry.
-
welcome! looks like a heck of a collection you've established there. I think you will find snakes to be an extremely rewarding venture! :)
-
Well, I hate to keep posting in the welcome thread but oh well. The Corn is in a 10 gallon for now since he's so small with aspen substrate. He has a shallow water dish and a heatrock (with cord cut off) The lid is a lockable lid (also has weight on it. He has a basking lamp for heat.
The BP is in a 20Long with just paper towel for substrate and a hidey box (completely covered) and a soaking dish. He has a large rock under the heat light. I have UVB for both.
I have a friend that has probably 100+ snakes and he wants to trade me a Corn for the BP. My daughter isn't too thrilled with the BP like she thought she would be..he's so BIG! She loves how small the Corn is and how easily she can handle him so we may be trading...not sure yet.
So, pick away at the husbandry...that's what I am here for. I will also post my husbandry in a seperate post in the correct forum.
-
OK, I would definitly get rid of the heat rock, they are known for burning snakes.
And UVB isnt really needed, snakes are nocturnal.
Oh and the bp will get bigger so if you dont like how big he is now.............then i would get rid of it (as horrible as that sounds)
-
The heat rock can not burn the snake....the cord is CUT OFF. I was given 6 heat rocks so I cut the cords off of them and use them for basking areas...the look nice.
I agree about the size thing. My sis has 3 grown BP's and one juvi. I would prefer the Corn but my daughter has to make that decision.
-
Ohh ok i must have not seen the part where you said the cords were cut, ok that seems fine.
Do you have an undertank heater ?? those a great for belly heat and digesting meals.I got mine at wal-mart.
-
Yes. I have several of those. They are sticky on one side that attach to the underside of the tank. (ZooMed) I have about 5 different sizes. I need to drag them out and see which one would work best.
I hadn't even thought about those.
-
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but won't the cornsnake grow to be almost the same length as a BP? BPs are much thicker snakes though...
-
Yeah your right, corn snakes definitly get as long .............but not as thick.
An adult corn snake will prolly take large adult mice or small rats when adults, but ball pythons will eventually eat large rats, some people are un comfortable with that.
-
Yeah, I didn't consider that.. but also a 32 inch BP for a cornsnake doesn't sound like a great deal... well, I guess it depends on the size of the cornsnake but I'm assuming it'd be a baby because of it's size.
-
I know how big they get. I don't have a problem with feeding the rats and such. I just don't want to have a snake that my daughter will be uneasy with.
I bought this BP at the Reptile Expo on Saturday and am almost certain it's WC. I am VERY uncomfortable with a WC snake. (I feel like I am a backstabber after steady preaching against WC animals over the past years) but with him being WC I know him eating and his presonality are both quite "iffy".
Trading him for a CB, very tame, held a lot Corn, I think is a good decision at this point, especially with first time snake owners.
But, we will see.
-
Although i think your daughter will become more comfortable with him as time goes by i think you need to go with your gut, personally i think i would trade for the CB corn.
-
-
A brim ?? where did you see that ?
-
lol, where I listed my pets. I have a "pet" Brim.
A Brim is a fish. He was originally caught in the lake by my son and placed in my pond. Now he is in an aquarium by himself. So, he's a pet now.
-
It's Brim in the South and Bluegill in the North.....
-
Thanks you...I only know them as Brim..didn't know they were named differently up North..lol
Learn something new every day!!
-
Ok, I'm far more familiar with bluegilll. Yummy :P
-
Welcome Boxie.....I mean Reptilady sorry it took so long to welcome you lifes been crazy.
-
Hey!! Boxie/Repti, whatever!!LOL
I am learning so many things. I am very comfy with the corn. The BP still makes me iffy.
-
My step-daughter is 10 and I bought her her own male baby BP a couple of weeks ago. I am always telling her to put it back in the cage. She loves it. You should let your daughter hold a baby BP, you know one that is a couple of months old. That would change everyone's mind, including yours.
