here are pics of the two cresties i picked up at the greenville show.

this one is 8 weeks old and its color varies from light tan to dark orangey-brown. its a fiesty little one--tried to bite the breeder when he pulled it out of its hiding spot to show it to me--as if its little mouth is big enough!

this one is a 6 week old flame morph. the first pic shows its lightest coloration (that i have seen so far). the second pic is the same photo but i altered the color to show how it looked earlier in the evening.

i am amazed at how much they can change color. i didn't realize it was quite so drastic! both little ones chowed down on crickets last night--they are so cute when they hunt. :aww:

Aren't they cute when they hunt? I love that! I was quite surprised by how much they can change color, too, and you'll be surprised again most likely when they change more in a few months. My Scooby has recently gotten much darker in her evening coloration. Congrats on your new buddies! :)

    Contests ...
So since you have eenie and meenie, you're going to name one of the new ones, moe, right? :)

the two in the pics are eenie (bottom pics) and meenie(top pic--and i spelled it "meenie" instead of "meanie" cuz he's not "mean" :)) and yes, i have plans for a future miney and moe. :D

eenie, meenie, miney, moe, catch a gecko by the toe. :P

Doesn't sound like she forgot miney to me! ;) Cresties should come in pairs, like shoes. :P

Yeah when I read your sig the first time I thought that you already had two cresties named eenie and meenie. Instead, you just have two, not four.

marla, on the crestie caresheet you recommend this book: Rhacodactylus: The Complete Guide to their Selection and Care by Philippe de Vosjoli, Frank Fast, Allen Repashy

how helpful/informative/worth the money would you (and others who may have the book) say it is? i generally do purchase his books, but this one is rather more expensive than the others so i want to make sure about it. does it have a lot of good info in it that isn't in the caresheet and in other general online resources? i do plan on possibly breeding them in the future (maybe in a year or so) so i'm thinking perhaps it would be a good source at least for that kind of info?

the book does cover husbandry, it covers all rhacs not just cresteds. the pictures are good and can help in choosing morphs. it is a good book, helpful, and nice pics. you don't need it to raise/breed cresteds though.

I agree with Vaughn.. with most species .... although the authors are well educated on the subject matter they are writing the book on and/or they are very good at collecting information.. There is enough free information out there on just about any species you can think of any more.... you just have to watch where you go to get it . as soon as a book hits the market the information within is dispersed to a thousand different care sheets across the net The best places to look are on actuall breeder pages with proven track records

mlededee, I agree with what Vaughn and Robert said, the book isn't essential. I deliberately left breeding info out of the crestie caresheet because the caresheet was long enough and breeding justifies its own article, I think, but there is really not much about the cresties that you can't pick up from reputable sources online. The book is good and has helpful photos when trying to tell a fire morph from a harlequin or what have you, not to mention good detail on sexing cresties by anal pores with a jeweler's loupe, but you can certainly get along without it.

thanks guys for the responses. perhaps i'll go by the library and see if they can get a copy of it for me to look at when i have some time. marla, maybe you could write care sheets for every herp so that we never have to buy books since you are so nice and thorough. ;) :D

LOL! I may be thorough, but I don't have the knowledge to write caresheets for more than a few herps or the time to do all the research.
