humidity is my nemesis!!

okay so i don't think i can maintain the correct humidity for my bp unless i stand at his enclosure every second for the rest of his life endlessly misting. he is in a wood enclosure, with repti bark, a large water bowl, and i'm misting like 5 times a day right now yet i'm always at a constant 50%. i will mist the bark and turn it up with my hands so all the underneath layers get misted so it won't just evaporate off the top so fast. i will get the humidity up to like 70 for a half hour or something and then it will drop right back down to 50 or below. i am so frustrated and don't know what to do at this point. i do provide humid hides close to shed time so his sheds have been much better. but i would like to solve this problem. some friends of mine suggested some kind of water seal paint that is non toxic that they used in their wood enclosure and then baked it in the sun to get all the fumes out and they say it works great. anyone know much about that?

a constant 50% would be fine during non shed periods

during sheds, it should even be fine, if you take measures like giving the snake a bath once a day until shed.

Just build a humid hide and keep it humid and clean.

I don't know if it was a Freudian thing or plain stupidity on my part, but when I read this thread, I thought is said, "Humanity is my nemisis."

thanks. okay so i can stop feeling like a horrible snake mommy that my snake stays at 50? and i do provide baths and hides with a wet washcloth during and a bit prior to shed but are you saying i should keep a humid hide all the time?

A constant 50% sounds right on the money :). A humid hide or a nice tepid bath could help durin shed time, and if you wanted you could leave the humid hide in there all the time.

Speaking of tepid baths, does anyone else find that thier snake like the water hot? Kitty will not stay in tepid water, but loves the warmer stuff.

Sounds ok. You could always get a little humdifier for the room if you're tired of misting all the time. (I did that, the new substrate and plexiglass was holding humidity better, but I was afraid I'd never get his humdity high enough during shed later.)

I should put the humidifer on a timer though, instead of running in every few hours to either turn it off or turn it on.

does it make the air colder or warmer?

hmm im always having trouble getting my humidity DOWN instead of up.

i dont mist or anything,while they are shedding i just fill the ater bowl up a little more and that bumps it up to about 75 or 80.But lately its been around 55 so thats good.


(totally off subject but.....) Now i have a heater in my room with a built in thermostat, now i can keep my room at 80 (or higher, whatever i want) ALL THE TIME its great ! now i dont have to worry about it getting to cold at night becuase i have my trusty heater to back me up !! :D :D its awesome !

like everyone else has said 50% is A-OK.
When shed time comes you can take a small pc of sponge and put it in the warm hide to boost up or do the humid hide thing.
Along with a daily soak of at least 45-60 mins and you should be more than fine.
You can also get a humidifier for the cage it's self. It's called a TropicAire or we even have a do it yourself one listed on here some where, that you can make.

Yeah. I should have mentioned that the little cage humdifier wasn't working for me, but I had a sloppy DIY version, and more of the air probably leaked out the top of the jug :P

The air gets slightly cooler, since I have a cool mist humdifier in the room. However, it doesn't affect his temperatures at all.

you could always add some fake plants in it cuz i was havin problems too then i added some in there but i cant figure out y the humidity went up cuz that!

if you are using heat lamps, they will dry out the air. a heatpad or heat tape will help with a humidity problem. also adjusting the ventilation more venting=les humidity/ less venting= more humidity

I remember someone, I think it was rex, said he put a brick that had been soaked in water in his wood enclosure, and it helped alot. Might give that a try.

a brick? hmmm, i will definitely try that one right away and certainly look into all the other methods. thank you everyone.
