    GRAPHIC IMAGE -is this normal?
I have never ever seen this happen before. I just fed Monty, and I looked down after throwing the box away and saw this (that's the mouses blood not Monty's... I am gradually trying to retrain monty to eat f/t (this one was live). I know its obviously a possibility, but is it normal? I have a tank cleaning scheduled on Tuesday or Wednesday, so I will be scrubbing the sides of his tank to get the scent of blood out of there (best product for this??)

Maybe its because he had the mouse pressed against the glass?

    Yep. It happens.

My BCI "pops" his rats often.

I have never seen it before. I immediately checked monty for bites, but there weren't any. I suppose it could happen often. Like a toothpaste container... Pop

I don't feed rats, I had to bash the last one over the head when my snake went special needs during the feeding and but him in the arse. Instead of the head. Just multiple mice for now until I get him on f/t.

My red tail boa does this a lot with the fresh killed rats I feed her. My baby bp has done this a couple times too with her rat pups. That's why I usually throw a big ceramic casserole dish under my red tails rat and half my red tails body as she is eating so it doesn't get blood in the cage or eat aspen. She is VERY mellow though so I can even pick her up while shes eating but I wouldn't recommend putting hands on or around a feeding big snake for obvious reasons.

Ugh, yeah I've seen eyes pop out before. Fairly normal.

Yeah, I didn't think about that until after the fact. Now I just need to clean his tank in a few days. Any suggestions for cleaning the smell? I've heard white wine vinegar and water?

Yup it happens sometimes. Here's a pic of when it happened with my mimosa I also got scared and thought it was an injury on her but it was from the rat.

A pencil is a better alternative when they don't strike and coil correctly. Put it in the rats mouth so it can bite the wood and not your snake.

It's something that happens, just last night I had one squeeze all the rat's internal organs out of its side... it smells bad for a little while but that's it.

Gross. Lol. I feed in tank (obviously) did you, too? Or did you use a feeder box?

No I feed everyone in their tubs (and my bigger snakes in their viv's), I don't subscribe to the thought of feeding in a separate enclosure.

How did you clean the mess? Just wipe it down?

when I checked on snakes today I scrubbed that one's water bowl off with a pad before filling it yeah, I wouldn't use a mix of vinegar and water like you suggested just because any lingering smell of vinegar would probably stress the snake and may even make it stop eating til the smell is gone

I don't want it to smell of rat blood. I'm due to change his substrate in the next week, maybe after I clean the spot, the new substrate will help cover the smell.

Really it sounds like you're over thinking it, wipe any blood away with water and a paper towel and you're fine.

The OP does seem to be over-thinking quite a lot...:weirdface:weirdface Just spot clean, and your snake will be fine :gj:

I may be over thinking it, but I don't want any chance of him thinking I'm food when I take him out

Even if you get bit cause the snake is confused it's not bad, BP bites really itch more than anything. And one bite doesn't mean the snake is aggressive, more often than not it just means they were confused at the time.

I'm not worried about getting bit. I'm more worried about him. I've lived through snake bites before. I'm going to give it a few days.

If he ate he's fine, if they're eating is or not is the best measure of health for the most part.

Oh, he's eating alright. Lol. Quite an appetite. I let him digest for a few days before handling him. Just a habit I have, I guess.
